Supafix Fire Rated (SFR) non-combustible insulated cavityclosers are the economical way to achieve building regulationscompliance and one hour fire integrity when closing cavitiesaround window and door openings. SFR provides a highlyversatile solution in second fix installation when a frame formeris not required. The rigid PVCu profile encloses a weather resistant polythene encapsulated mineralwool insulation which forms a continuous insulated cavity closer preventing coldbridging. SFR can be used with all types of door and window openings. SFR wastested at Warrington Fire Research and was found to be in accordance with BS476Cert 20 1987. SFR provides 60 minutes fire integrity and up to 60 minutes fireinsulation.
SFR is primarily designed for second fix applications and can be simply cut to lengthand push fitted into the cavity after the window or door opening has been made thuseliminating the need for cut blocks, bricks or special reveal blocks. SFR is available ina range of sizes to fit cavity widths from 50mm - 100mm, with sufficient designflexibility to tolerate rogue cavity widths, thus reducing time and cost on site.

RECOMMENDED FOR CLOSING THE CAVITY AROUND WINDOW ANDDOOR OPENINGS IN SECOND-FIX INSTALLATIONS WHEN A FRAMEFORMER IS NOT REQUIRED.
APPLICATIONSFR profile is suitable for use with all window anddoor frame materials, including timber, PVCu andaluminium.
SFR is cut to the height or width of the cavity openingand then push fitted into the cavity (fig.2). Slightcavity width variations can be overcome by applyingsmall pressure. For this purpose a margin of insulatingmaterial projects from the PVCu encasement to allowa firm friction fit. In cases of extreme cavity widthvariation, this projecting insulation can be trimmed onsite with a knife to allow insertion into the cavity.

THE PROBLEM OF COLD BRIDGING (Fig. 3)The problems of cold bridging are recognised in the new Part L BuildingRegulation revised 2002. Part L recommends that an insulated cavitycloser be used to overcome thermal loss that occurs in unprotected cavitiesand reveals. Thermal loss can result in problems of condensation, stainingand mould growth at the reveals of these openings. Prolonged exposure tosuch factors will lead to a deterioration of the internal plaster and paintwork. The use of SFR will help to prevent the occurance of such factors.
PART L REVISED 2002SFR will exceed the minimum requirement of 0.45 m2 K/W for thermalresistance. When for example the window is set back at 30mm, thethermal resistance will in fact exceed 0.75m2 K/W (as indicated in theRobust Detail for walls). The minimum u value requirement of 0.35W/m2
will be achieved if all products are fitted to manufacturersrecommendations and thermally efficient products are used within the construction.
Fig. 3 Identifies the heat loss from a building which isthe cause of cold bridging.
