Coronavirus Affects Events Industry in Singapore. TheCOVID-19virushasundoubtedlymadeadentto the events industry in Singapore. Several clients have cancelled their events, but thankfully some have postponed rather than cancel the events to the later part of the year. Freelancers in the industry most felt the impact. To their credit, the STAR Association(SingaporeTalent,ArtistesandResources)hasbeenactivelytryingtorallyandhelptheindustry.Otherthanremindingmembers
aboutresponsiblestepstobetaken,includinghygieneandhealthpractices,theassociationmetwithgovernmentorganisationstosharetheconcernsoffreelancers.Thisincludedsettingupasteeringcommitteetotacklethechallengesand a gathering on 26 Feb to throw light on the Budget 2020 by the government to help members understand how the industry can stabilise and grow together in preparationfortherebound.
Oneaspectofthisviruseffectthathastakenthelimelightrelatestocontractsbetweenfreelancersandthecompanieshiringthemforthejobs.Itisanopportunityforfreelancerstounderstandcontractsbetter.

StageCraftInternationalistheleadingproviderofaudio,lighting,video,technicalintegrationservicesandconferencingtechnologyinthecountry.The2019SEAGames,heldNovember30-December11,wasthe30theditionofthebiennialregionalsportsevent.Morethan5,500athletes competed in 56 sports.

Chinese Television System Relies on Riedel Intercom Solution at Taipei’s New Year’s Eve Broadcast
RiedelCommunicationstodayannouncedthatChineseTelevisionSystem(CTS)reliedonaRiedelintercomsolutiontosupportitsliveproductionofthe2020TaipeiNewYear’sEveParty,hostedattheTaipeiCityHallSquare.BroadcastlivebyCTSonitsflagshipchannelandonitsnewschannels,theseven-hourbroadcastincludedmultipleTaiwanesestarperformances,withanimpressiveNewYear’sEvecountdownlightinguptheiconicTaipei101skyscraperandastunningfive-minutefireworksdisplay.TheshowatTaipeiCityHallisgrowingbiggerandmorespectaculareveryyearandrecentlyrankedamongCNN’sTop10placestospendNewYear’sEve.
“For us it was important to have a reliable intercom system that would ensuresmoothcommunicationduringalonglivebroadcastwindow,”saidMattLin,EngineeratCTS.“Weexpectedahighlevelofnoisefromthe crowd and also from the stage, and this was a challenge.
Nevertheless,theproduction,camera,andstagecrewscamebackwithpositivefeedbackonBolero.Thisisthefirsttimewehaveexperiencedsuchhighqualityinaudioandsystemstabilityinanoperationofthisscale,andwewereblownawaybyBolero’sperformance.Ipersonallyfeelit’sthemostsuperbwirelessintercomsystemI’veeverused.”
Attheheartoftheliveproduction,theCTSproductionteamwasequippedwithtwoArtist-64mainframesthatinterfacedwithRSP-2318SmartPanels,Bolerobeltpacks,andRiedelheadsets.CTSchosetoworkwithRiedelnotonlybecauseoftheversatilityprovidedbythissolution,butbecauseofBolero’srobustfeatureset,whichenablesverylowlatencyandoptimalaudioqualityinhigh-noiseenvironments.

In1994apositionbecameavailablewithEVAustralia.Phillappliedforthisjobandgotit.Here,hehadtheopportunitytolearnmoreabouttheproducts,thecompanyanditshistory.HewasgivenacopyofLouBoroughs(‘MrMicrophone’andfounderofElectro-Voice)referenceworkfrom1963.Inthisworktherewasaconstantmentionof‘TheBuchananHammer’,themicrophonethatLouusedtohammer3”nailsintotimberwhileitwaspluggedin.ThiswasprobablythestartofPhill’sfascinationwithvintageEVmics.
Intrackingdownthe664microphone(BuchananHammer)Philldiscovered more and more about the history of EV and numerous iconicmicrophonesthathadlargelyneverbeenexposedinAustralia.Itneedstoberememberedthatupuntilthe60’sAustraliawaslargelyinfluencedbyBritishtrendsandAmericanmicrophoneswerenotthatcommon.Phill’sresearchledhimtobelievethatEVhadahistoryandengineeringheritagethatwasfargreaterthancompetitivebrandsandthis encouraged his interest, desire to learn more and to convey this knowledgeandexperiencetocontemporarymicrophoneusers.

ShowartisticdirectorStevenMartinfromTheCintamaniStone:ArchitectofEMOTION(TCS-AOE)askedLuconboardfortheirpitch,andtheywereawardedtheprojectbyDoha-basedeventcompanyThePlannersLLC.
Workingtogetherforseveralyearsnow,theexperiencedteamatThePlannerscombinedwithTCSandTrimexhasbecomeamajorplayerintheQatarmarketforthesetypesofshowsandevents.Lucwasexcitedtobepartofanall-BelgiumtechnicaldesignandimagineeringteamincludingOCtechnicaldirectorLudoVanstreelsfromTrimexwithwhomPWLhasalsoworkedonseveralpreviousprojects.

Analreadyincrediblytighttimescaleforcreatingandproducingacomplexeventwasalsoshortenedwhenthedatewasbroughtforwardbyoneday!
Integraltothewinningpitchwereelaborateprojectionsmappedontothestagefloorandholographicimagesbeamedonaspecial30-metre-wideby12-metre-highscrim–currentlyatrendingaestheticintheworldofeSporttournamentOCs.Thesehadtobecarefully‘litaround’,combinedwithseveralflyingandground-basedcastmembersandperformers.
LargeamountsofvideoandLEDscreenstogenerallycontendwithwereadditionalchallengesforlighting.

And of course, the 25-minute show had to look awesome, spectacular andcoolwithallvisualentitiescombinedtoproducebeautifullyfluidand epic results.
Luc’sdesignwasbasedaroundseven16-metre-hightowers,threeupstage and four downstage to the sides to provide a sense of depth and a basic structural framework around the 80-meter-wide oval-shaped performance space.
Thesetowersalsoservedasusefullightingpositions.
Upstagewastheimpressive1000plussquaremetre,12-metre-highbackvideowall.Thestagesurfacewasmappedforprojectionsandtheholographic images were beamed onto massive special holo-scrims.
Lucchose100RobeMegaPointesashismaineffectslightingfixtures.
Theseweredistributedondifferentlevelsofallseventowers,aswellasalongthetopedgeofthevideowallatthebackandscatteredonthestagedeck,givingthreedistinctivelayersofopticalattack.ThiswasneededtoworkwiththecombinationofVRandcast,includingtheflyingcharacters,dancersandholographicimagesallintegratedintheexcitingcollageofhi-energyvisuals.
NarratingthestoryofhowQatarcametohosttheWEGAGlobalGamesincludedsomestrikingvisualsfullyrecreatingtheuniversesfromkeytournamentgameslikeStreetFighter,PESeFootball,Dota2andCounterStrike:GlobalOffensive,representingallthecompetingteams…as
no footage could be cleared through the licencing process in the short timeframe.
Luc created a series of special looks with the MegaPointes to complimenttheholographiccharacters.“Theyareagreatfixtureforthis,offeringmultipleoptionsforwild,crazyandoff-beateffectsthatwere perfect for this show,” he commented.
Lightingwassupplied–alongwithaudio,LEDscreen,groundsupporttrussing,vari-speedmotorsforperformerflying,generalriggingandtrussing–bytheDohabranchofmediaProInternationalwhoalsobuiltthestage.ThestagewasbuiltbyThePlanners’in-housedecorteam.
InadditiontotheMegaPointes,therewere60xRobeSpiiderLEDwashbeams,36xCyclopsLEDwashes,50xClaypakyMythosand42CPSceniusUnicoswhichwereusedtohighlightcastpositionsfromthesidesandforilluminatingspecificpartsoftheprojectionareas.
Muchofthegenerallightingcamefromthesidesasfrontlightingwasminimal–justfourfixtures–sonottospillontotheholo-scrims.
ClaypakyStormyLEDstrobesplusbeamlightsandavarietyofotheravailablefixturesalladdeduptoover500lightsources...notamassiverigtofillastadium,buteachoneofthemwasworkedhardandusedinatrulymultifunctionalcontext!TheircollectiveflexibilitytogetherwithLuc’simaginationandtheprogrammingskillsofhisassociateLDRaphaelDemonthyandlightingprogrammerSebastianHuwigonsite,ensured some eye-popping cues in the grandMA2 consoles.

Duetotheshortturnaroundtime,oncetheinitialdesignproposalswereaccepted,LucWYSIWYG’dthestageandlightinginPWL’sstudioinGenk,Belgium,aprocessthatinvolvedintenseandconstantcommunicationwithStevenMartinandLudoVanstreels.
Ludocomments,“LucandIhaveknowneachotherandworkedtogether for over 25 years, and this synergy and understanding was a hugeassetonthisprojectduetotheveryshortnotice.”Luccreatedhislightingdesignwiththeequipmentthatwasavailableintheregionatthetime.WorkinginWYSIWYGgainedthemconsiderabletimeintheproductionphasewithLucandLudoworkingononemasterfile–intowhichLudowasaddingallthetechnicalequipmentwhilstLucwas drawing all the lights.
Duringtheinstallationperiod,thetwowereindirectcontactinordertoadaptthingsquicklyifnecessary.
“ItwasgreatworkingwithLucandhiscolleaguesagainonthischallengingtime-pressuredevent”concludedLudo.
AsitevisitwasnotpossibleforLucinthetimeframe,however,Ludo,StevenandJoPaulyfromVisualSolutionsallvisited,andSteven’steam produced a complete mock-up and storyboard of the show with
soundtrack.Thisprovidedanextremelyaccuratevisualimpression,allowingallthebasiclightingbuildingblockstobeassembledremotelyandsharedbetweenthevariouscreativeandtechnicaldepartments…as their own areas were simultaneously developed.
The video elements were assembled, coordinated and controlled by JoPauly...anotherhighlyregardedpractitionerwithwhomLucandPWLhaveagreatworkingrelationshipandatrackrecordofotherdemandingprojects.ThevideocontentwascreatedbyPix&RealandPrismax.MusicwascompiledbyTinoPlettinckwiththesupportofUniversalProductionMusic.Ateamofabout40performingtalentsandfiveshowrunnerswereflowninwiththeTCSteam.
“Havingalltheseresourcestohandpluseveryone’stalent,experience,visionandpassiononboardhelpedenormouslyinpullingacomplexandhighprofileshowtogetherunderalotofpressure,”commentedLuc, who was delighted with the results and very proud to have been part of producing such a great looking show.

“We actually ended up simplifying our supply chain as much as possible inpartnershipwithSela,locallyassistingwithprocurement,”revealedGreenway.“PRGveryquicklybecamethego-tocompanyforlightsandvideo,withaudioequipmentcomingoutoftheirGermanoffice.Thiswas a real no brainer, primarily because we were using a lot of very fewfixtures-it’sEDMafterall-andsosourcingtheassetswasahugefactorinthisdecision.PRGalsocomeswithasupportstructureandaspecial projects team like no other.”

TheLarMacLIVEteamfacedsomesignificantchallenges;theentiresitehadtobecreatedfromscratch,meaningastandardworkflowwasoffthecards.Greenwaysaid:“GoingfromAtoBtoCjustwasn’tpossiblehere but using our usual pool of world-class talent, from design through to delivery, makes these jobs possible. Everyone knows how each other works and were able to fast track the process.”
Therewasalsothesmalltaskofeverythingbeingflown(apartfromstaging)intheweeksbeforeChristmas.“Wewereuptofour747soffreight, plus all of our dangerous goods - there was one plane of pyro
explosivesalone,”recalledGreenway.“Timedidbeatusheretostartwith,wejustcouldn’tfindcommercialcargospaceduetotheholidays,but with the support of the Royal Saudi Airforce we did a convoy of gear out of East Midlands Airport and were able to beat all of our deadlines.”
Whenthefestivalopenedon19thDecember,attendeesweretreatedtothreedaysofmusic,artsandculture–amixoflocalandinternationaltalentthataddeduptothelargesteventofitskindtobeheldinthecountry.Greenwayreflected:“Itsimplywouldn’thavegotoffthegroundanywhereelseintheworldorwithoutthepassionofLemonX and Lutma, the Saudi-based promoter, or indeed the incredible levelsoffinishfromthelocaldeliverypartnerSela.Whatweallcollectivelyachievedstillamazesme.
“Thisis,wehope,thefirstofmanyBeasts–itdefinitelytakesmorethan one show to develop a scene, especially in dance, but Saudi is sohungryforthiskindofculturethatwe’rereallyexcitedabouttheirworld-stagegrowth.Inmythreemonthsexperienceofthecountry,I’mgenuinelyimpressedbywhatthey’redeliveringandthetalentthey’reenticingover.Ofcourse,itcomesatapremium,butwiththerightknowledge a maturing market like Saudi could become a huge world hubforentertainmentinpracticallynotimeatall.”

Performers were tracked precisely, witheverymovementperfectlypresentedfortheenthusiasticaudiencein the stadium and at home on TV. InrecentyearsIhaveseeninterviewsandcommentsbydearbelovedcolleaguesonhowtheysetuptheirmixesandwhattheyuseforprocessing.Ihaveheardcommentslike,“Asyoucanseewealmostdonoprocessingperchannel”,wheninfacttheyhadsixorsevenpluginsdaisychainedineachchannel.Iwonderifthisreallymakestheresultsomuchbetter.Justbecauseyoucan,doesnotmeanyouhavetoandIalwaysfeltverycriticalaboutusingstuff,thatdoesnotmakemyworkbetter.The“BYPASS”buttonquicklyrevealsifwhatyouaredoingisgoodornot.WiththisinmindIwishforustodevelopanevenmorecriticalhearingthanwehadbackintheday.Wedidnotusealotofprocessing,simplybecauseitwastooexpensiveandstuffwasnot
available for all gigs. Today we have everything in every channel, but more is not always more and we need to stay vigilant about this.
Don’tgetmewrong.Ithinkthefact,thatallthisprocessingisavailableeverywhereisfantasticandIwouldnotwanttogobackforamilliondollars.Howeverweneedtokeeptrackandthendotheoccasionalhousekeepingandcleanupstuffandthengettingridofprocessingwhichdoesnotreallyhelp,isreallybeneficialtoourwork.Itallgoesbacktoyourtoolboxandthericheryourtoolboxis,thebetteryouareequippedtodealwiththechallengesofthejob.FindingandchoosingtherighttoolandalsotherightamounthasbecomeaverydifferentchallengethesedaysandIwishthatallyourtoolboxesgetfullerandweallgetbetteronhowtouseitwisely.Iwishyouallenoughgainonthefaderalways….
