WHAT is a Battalion SafetyFair?

The San Francisco Fire Department is conducting Community Safety

Fairs throughout the year in each of our 10 Battalions.

This is an effort to engage the communities we serve with their

local Firefighters, EMT’s and Paramedics, to allow local

communities to meet the members of their nearby Fire Stations, and to provide them with an overview of

what we do.

Why do we do the Battalion Safety Fairs?

To help promote our Fire and Safety Education

Programs

To foster a relationship with our local fire station

neighbors, and communities.

To bring Safety material to a focused location, rather

than having the community go to a stationary location.

Why on Wednesdays?

Last year evaluated neighborhoods for times and dates

Most communities wanted to be able to go to their Fire Station

Participating at each Community Safety Fair are the following

1.Public Information Officer with media

2.Bureau of Fire Prevention

Education Team

3.Fire Recruitment Team

4.EMS Medics for Hands only CPR and

BP Screening

5.Battalion members participate to meet

the people they serve

6. Neighborhood Emergency

Response Team (NERT)

7. City College Students help with

Community Outreach

8. SFPD, DEM and other City agencies

join to help promote safety

Public Information Officer

• Provides Community awareness for each Fair

• Provides media Awareness and presence for each Fair

• Facilitates City College Student involvement

• Facilitates collaboration with other City Departments

Bureau of Fire Prevention

• The new Prevention and Education Team provides the following:• Fire Extinguisher Demonstration and training

• Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detector Safety Tips

• Provides Detectors to families who need them

• Offers presenting a 1-2 hour long safety presentation at a pre-determined location and event

• Promotes all risk hazards safety and provides safety material on multiple topics

FIRE RECRUITMENT

• Provides on-site recruitment information

• Promotes our Diverse Department

• Encourages people to consider a career with the Department

• Provides DETAILED information on the hiring process, and requirements

EMS DIVISION

• Promotes our EMS Division and services

• Shows the Public our Equipment

• Teaches Hands Only C.P.R

• Takes Blood pressures

• Promotes Health Safety and provides educational pamphlets on same

Battalion Members

Promote the Safety Fair within their own Station Districts

Promotes Disaster Preparedness

Encourages participation in NERT

Engages in hands on Disaster pre-planning with Community members

Provides educational materials on Disaster Planning

City College Fire Science Program

Fire Academy students are mandated to do a MINIMUM of 8 hours volunteer work while actually in the Fire Academy.

1Fire Science students learn early about Fire Academy requirements for volunteering, and they frequently support volunteer requests as well.

2Retired Captain Jim Lee stated that part of the huge success for the 150th SFFD celebrations was the volunteer participation from CCSF Fire Science and Fire Academy students.

3Part of the Huge success for the Battalion Safety Fairs is from the CCSF Students’ participation as well.
