Hope

The death of dreams seems to send us slamming into an immovable wall of despair, where we feel abandoned, alienated and totally powerless. The negative takes control and the positives dwindle into oblivion.

Many things can send us into the downward spiral of despair, it may be

the loss of a loved one, a divorce, the failure of a child to live up to your expectations, the failure to fulfil a life long dream or just the realisation that that there are some things we will never achieve.

These feelings of failure often bring us to a place where we feel that

God has abandoned us, in some way we feel that he has failed us. We find it difficult to believe in a God who makes the impossible possible.

But often it is through the suffering that we find our way to peace. If

we turn our sorrows over to God's will and place all our fears and hurts over to him, we will find that in no time at all we will go from being a cup half empty person to a cup half full.

Hope is the key that opens the door which enables us to enter a new

experience of community and unity with God. It is hope that enables us to blend the secular and the sacred, and reconcile our will with Gods will.

With hope we are liberated to be all that God calls us to be, it removes

us from that awful feeling of being stuck in a miserable rut that makes us feel so desperate and alone in our suffering, so that we cannot see a way out.

Hope proclaims to the doubting spirit that neither death, divorce, fail-

ure or under achievement does not have the final word. God does not in-tend us to be victims. God's way is to give power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

Hope is not visible. Yet if we believe and allow God to take charge, let God work within our suffering we will find the peace we crave. How do we let God take charge? We do it by giving all our hurt, suffering and

feelings of failure to God in prayer. We ask Him to help us, to heal us, to walk with us each step that we take to recovery.

Okeford Fitzpaine Village Hall

The Fippenny Fayre on the 21sr June was a great success, with good weather, lots of cyclists, dogs, their owners, car booters and of course a good crowd of visitors. At the time of going to press, an approximate total of £1,600 was made. This will be confirmed in next months Fippen-ny News.

Thanks of course must go to all the many who helped though out the

day, from early morning setting up, running stalls, providing cakes and the many prizes for the raffles, tombola etc and the Football Club with the B.B.Q and the ladies in the refreshment room, and of course, clearing up afterwards. We could not have done it without you all. Funnily enough, they all seemed to enjoy themselves! And looking a bit further ahead.....put the dates in your diary now.

for me to find one now. If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School

Well done everyone taking part in the Athletics The year 3 boys put amazing effort into the throwing and jumping

events. In fact one of our year 3 boys stepped up to the plate and entered as a year 4 boy. The children gave it their all in the sprints, with one getting through to the final and others getting pipped to the post finishing 3rd. It turned out that they had more to give and when it came to the relay, they were like a showcase in how it should be done.

Our lone year 3 girl proved her determination when sprinting. After an amaz-ing effort in her field event, she went on to the sprinting, showing amazing spirit. After she lost a shoe half way down the track, she carried on regardless. A true winner in sporting effort.

The year 4 girls put in a sterling performance in the jumping and reports from the throwing area were that they put in an equally sterling performance in the throwing!

When it came to the sprints we competed well giving 100% in effort. When it came to the relay again the effort and determination from the girls was second to none. Although not placed they competed to the very best of their ability and with beaming smiles.

The year 5 girls did absolutely brilliantly in the relay. The year 6 girls had stiff competition, but I can honestly say they all did themselves, and us, proud. When it came to the year 5 and 6 boys relay we had only 3 boys to enter, so 1 of the boys had to run twice, the only word I can say for them is HEROIC!

As parents, the one thing we did notice was how supportive of each other our children are. It really stood out. They all cheered each other on, and then cele-brated or commiserated at the end.

A busy and successful year for Okeford Fitzpaine CE

VA Primary School

In September 2014 we started the academic year with a new interim Headteacher Mr. Alan Frame. The school had a difficult previous year but with the leadership of Mr. Alan Frame everything was about to change. This new era for the school began with the school celebrating 200 years of education in Oke-ford Fitzpaine, the original school was established in 1814. In October 2014, we had a very memorable visit from the Bishop of Salisbury when he blessed the

wooden cross that has been erected in the school garden. There are now plans to create a garden for reflection around the cross.

We also welcomed Peter Wilson, the Olympic Gold Medalist Trap Shooter,

who opened the school fun day. Governors, staff, children and parents dressed in costumes of various ages across the 200 years and we welcomed pupils and friends past and present..

Then things got even better and Ofsted rated our school as GOOD in the

spring term and then in June we were rated GOOD by the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS). We were particularly delighted with the outcome of the Ofsted inspection given the new Ofsted framework is so much more demanding than previous ones. The school is really doing very well and both Inspectors commented that “Pupils enjoy coming to the school, look after each other, behave very well and are rightly proud of their school and that the teaching was good”.

So where do we go from here? Now there are opportunities for schools to take control of their immediate and

long-term futures by being part of an Academy. After a great deal of research and discussion the Governors decided that joining the Shaftesbury Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) offered the greatest opportunity for our school. The MAT includes Shaftesbury High School, Motcombe Primary School and Shaftesbury Primary School. This decision has not been taken lightly, we see this as an exciting opportunity, which we believe will secure the future for your school in the village of Okeford Fitzpaine for years to come.

None of this would have been possible without our dedicated staff, the sup-

port from the parents and volunteers, the tenacity of the Governors and of course our hard working delightful children. Sadly, we say goodbye to Mr John-son who is moving to Italy with his family. We welcome our new Headteacher, Mrs Chant. The future is looking good and secure as we move forward into a new school year.

Diana Sale Chair of Governors.

Okeford Fitzpaine Allotment Group The award for ‘Plot Holder of the Year’ was presented by outgoing

Chairman Robert Loving to Ralph Walker at the allotment group AGM in April. The trophy is an air valve which was unearthed when the ground in Church Field was first ploughed to create the allotment plots in 2009. Due to its size and weight (the valve is very heavy) it is some-what cumbersome as a mantelpiece ornament so the plinth on which the valve is mounted is engraved with the winner’s name each year and placed in the village museum. A small silver cup is presented to the winner

At the June meeting, Robert Loving

was presented with a gift on behalf of Okeford allotment members to

Ralph is something of a phenome-non – a spry 94 year-old, he can be seen working on his allotment on most days, rain or shine. He is certainly a perfect poster-boy for the healthy lifestyle allotmenteer-ing can promote!

Robert was a member of the original group who campaigned for the re-introduction of allotments in Oke-ford Fitzpaine. The presentation was made by new Chairman, Ian Crichton

Gorgeous Gooseberries

I love Gooseberries, could never understand why they went out of fash-ion although they are once more becoming popular. Some find them too acidic, but, with just the right amount of sweetening they are delicious. Used green they make superb jam and jelly. If left to ripen on the bush (blackbirds allowing) they are the nectar of the gods. Don’t forget to top and tail them, best done sitting in the garden in the sunshine. Wash, drain well, and cook with as little water as possible.

Gooseberry Cream Flan You can of course use a bought flan case

Flan: 2 eggs: 2oz (50g) Caster sugar: 2 oz (50g)S.R Flour: 1 de-sertspn Bourneville Cocoa.

Whisk eggs and sugar until thick and fluffy (I do it over a bowl of hot water). Sieve flour & cocoa, then carefully fold into mixture. Pour into a well greased flan tin (8”) Bake in oven for about 15 mins at 375°F/Mark 5/ 190° C. Remove carefully from tin and cool on wire rack.

Filling: ¼pt cold custard: ¼ pt gooseberry purée: ¼ oz gelatine: 2 tbs hot water: ¼ pt cream: sugar to taste.

Mix custard, purée and sugar together. Dissolve gelatine in hot water and stir into mix. Finally fold in cream and place in fridge until firm. Decorate with piped whipped cream and whole cooked gooseberries.

Gooseberry Snow

4 sponge cakes: 1 egg: just under ¼ pt milk: 1 dessertspoon sugar: 2 tbsp sherry (optional): ½ pt thick sweetened gooseberry purée: Decora-tion: whipped cream: toasted flaked almonds.

Divide sliced sponge cakes between 4 individual glass dishes. Separate egg yolk from white. Put yolk into a small pan and beat in milk then cook over gentle heat stirring, until mixture thickens into custard. Remove from heat and stir in sherry and sugar. Pour custard over sponge cakes and leave until cold. Whisk egg white until stiff and fold into fruit. Pile mixture on top of custard in dishes. Pipe swirl of whipped cream on top and decorate with almonds.

Gooseberry Crumble

1lb (450g) gooseberries: 4 oz (100g) sugar: 2 tsbspns apricot jam: 4 oz (100g) flour (wholemeal is good): 4 oz (100g) Demerara sugar: 2 oz (50g) butter.

Cook berries with sugar in a little water as possible. Put into pie dish and dot with apricot jam. Mix flour, Demerara and butter together. Press on top of gooseberries. Bake at 210°C/425°F/Gas 7 for 30-35 mins.

Gooseberry Cream

1lb(450g) gooseberries: 4fl oz (125ml) Rosé wine: 4 fl oz (125ml) water: rind of 1 lemon: 4oz (100g) sugar: 2eggs.

Put berries in pan with the wine, water and lemon rind and simmer un-til tender. Sieve (this removes seeds, a liquidizer well not). Return purée to pan and put over a gentle heat. Add sugar and stir gently until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Separate the eggs. Beat yolks into mixture and cool. Whip egg whites stiffly and fold into the mixture, pour into in-dividual glasses. Decorate with small ratafia (or amaretto) biscuit.

Must admit that my favourite is still a well made Gooseberry Pie with

custard. If you wish, you can add a spray of elderflowers to Gooseberries when cooking, gives a gentler less acidic flavour.

If you don’t have a bush in the garden, do plant one. They are easy to

grow and have very few pests. Sawfly sometimes eat the leaves but can be picked off and stamped on, and some years they get a touch of mildew. Otherwise they are tough and trouble free. That’s why old gardens always have at least one or two bushes.

Varieties; Careless. Popular old variety, green, good

for jam, bit prone to mildew Whinham’s Industry: Red when ripe and

delicious. Good for heavy soils Invicta: a modern green variety which

seems to be taking over from Careless. I have no personal experience to this one.

I have just been looking up Gooseberries on

Google and find that they contain 9 different vitamins and 8 trace ele-ments all in one little berry! So, eat your gooseberries, they are good for you!

The Producers Market joins with the Boogie Woogie Festival on Saturday 4th July

Following the highly successful Christmas Producers’ Market, the 2nd

exciting Food & Drink Market will take place on Saturday 4th July in the centre of Sturminster Newton. This is the result of working collaborative-ly with the Boogie Woogie Festival team, local businesses and The Ex-change to give additional support to the already vibrant internationally acclaimed annual musical extravaganza which is unique to this town.

The market will be held in the Market Place (9am-4pm) where visitors

can expect a wide range of Dorset food & drink from fresh breads, cheese & charcuterie, fine tea to freshly roasted coffee, pies & puddings, Marsh-wood Vale Cider, gourmet hotdogs and much more. The Boogie Woogie Youth Showcase will take place by the Market at 3.30pm and with addi-tional piano sessions scheduled at Poets Corner Café, the Mill and Caffé Espresso this gives the people in Sturminster Newton & beyond a great festive day to focus on.

Above all, the market and festival will provide a great opportunity for

people visiting this historic part of North Dorset to experience the wide variety of independent businesses, shops, cafes and restaurants in our town - all ready to welcome locals and visitors alike!

Additionally, a new and exciting Vintage Fair will be taking place in

the Lower Atrium at The Exchange (10am-5pm). This aims to attract not only the many visiting Boogie Woogie fans meandering around the town enjoying the fabulous live piano playing at the various venues, but, all visitors and local residents who love to rum-mage through all things retro. On why people complain to the vicar – and how to ignore them

From The Rectory St. James the Least My dear Nephew Darren

So, you have received your first letter of complaint. I am not wholly

unsympathetic with your complainant, as attempting to marry the bride to the best man would have created havoc with the seating arrangements at the reception. However, you must learn that receiving letters of complaint is an integral part of the ordained ministry. After 50 years of parish life, the number of such letters I have received are now held in bound volumes.

The anonymous ones you will receive, invariably written in green ink

on lined notepaper, can be safely consigned to your waste paper basket, along with all mail, from whatever source, labelled “Urgent”. You will receive letters complaining that you did not pray for someone who was in hospital, regardless of the fact that you knew nothing of it. Probably by the next post, you will receive a letter complaining that you did pray for someone in hospital – when they had wanted to keep their cosmetic sur-gery secret.

Those who regard themselves as guardians of doctrinal purity will

write complaining of the heresies contained in the previous Sunday’s ser-mon. These can be filed with those letters that complain that your ser-mons are too short, along with those who complain that they are too long.

The hourly striking of the church clock is a perennial favourite for

complaints. I usually reply by saying that we are currently exploring the possibility of getting it to strike the quarters too.

Letters of complaint will arrive in November, complaining that the

church is too cold, so making prayer impossible. Others will drop on the doormat in April saying that it is too hot, so making prayer impossible. In Spring, some will write that the churchyard should be mown more often, while others will complain that it is mown too often and ruins it as a habi-tat for wildlife. The annual Summer procession of witness generates com-plaints that the brass band ruined the slumbers of parishioners having a Sunday lie-in. Then come Harvest, there will be the letters complaining that they did not receive a Harvest gift, which was particularly unforgiva-ble, as their grandmother had once sung in the choir. Thus the annual

The only letter of complaint I have really treasured came from the bishop, rebuking me for never having attended any meeting when he was present. I have had it framed and hung on the study wall.

Hospital patients’ comment about the new minister: “He can stay

longer in an hour than most people do in a week.”

The minister went to the bank and asked for a statement of his account, adding: “We want to know how far afield we can go for our holiday.”

Handing him his statement the cashier enquired very gently: “Have you got a field at the back of your garden, sir?”

Where there’s a will, I want to be in it. In filling out an application, where it says, “In case of emergency,

notify ...” I answered, “a doctor.” Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you

hear them speak. I didn’t say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
