After his eight receptions against the
Minnesota Vikings last Sunday, Jarvis Landry
now has caught more passes than any rookie
in Dolphins history. I knew he’d be good when
I first saw him in training camp, contorting his
body all in sorts of ways to make the most dif-
ficult catches look routine.
But this good? This quickly? The best rook-
ie receiver in team history? I’m not sure any-
one expected that. Maybe anyone other than
Jarvis Landry.
“I’m going to make a name for myself in this
league,” Landry told me early in training camp.
“And I’m going to try to do it this season.”
Flash forward to the game at New
England. There was Landry lined up in the slot
and there was arguably the best cornerback in
the league, Darrelle Revis, following his every
move. Can there be a bigger compliment
than that?
“We kind of expected it,” said offensive
coordinator Bill Lazor.Over the past three months, Landry has
matured at a rapid pace. He earned his first
start in Week 6 against Green Bay and, with
his eight catches against the Vikings, he has
now put together eight straight games with at
least five receptions, the first Dolphins receiv-
er to do that since O.J. McDuffie 16 years ago.
“He is rare,” said Lazor.
How rare? Consider this story from assis-
tant wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan. It
was before training camp and the Dolphins
were installing many of their new plays.
McGeoghan had Landry stand up in front of a
group of veterans and break down one of
those new plays.
“He did it perfectly,” McGeoghan said. “I
mean he broke down everyone’s assignment.
The formation. The protection. Every single
part of the play.”
Were the veterans impressed? “They all
applauded,” McGeoghan said. “First time
I’ve ever seen that happen.”
A few offices down sits wide receivers
coach Ken O’Keefe. I asked O’Keefe if one
play from Landry’s first season stands out
above all others.“It was against the Patriots in the season
opener,” O’Keefe recalled. “We were at the

goal line and we needed a block from Jarvis.
He responded with as physical a block as
you’re going to see. In so many ways, that
play defined what he is all about.”Indeed, Landry is far more than simply a
player with exceptional receiving skills. He is
so passionate about everything he does, the
energy is turned up so high, that you can’t
help but notice his presence.
“His passion,” said O’Keefe, “is what
makes him special.”
And, of course, those hands. Many of histeammates tell me they can never remember
a player with better hands than Landry. I’ve
seen him make some one-handed catches in
practice that bordered on unreal. When he
was drafted out of LSU, a former opponent
told me that Landry makes the one-handed
catch better than the two-handed version.
“Shhh,” he said to me when I asked him
about it, “let that be our secret.”
But the secret is out on Jarvis Landry. For a
franchise that has had its share of second-
round disappointments over the years, this
one looks like a steal. While the NFL record
for most catches by a rookie is 101 set by
Anquan Boldin back in 2003, clearly not
attainable for Landry, he can easily crack thetop five if he continues the pace he is on.
Landry comes into the game against the
Jets today with 79 catches, which is tied for
eighth on the NFL’s all-time rookie receptions
list. Landry stands only four catches behind
fifth-place Earl Cooper, who had 83 catches
for the 49ers in 1980.
And I haven’t even mentioned yet theimpact he has had on both punt and kickoff
returns.
“He has so many of the qualities — the
toughness, the hands, the instincts —- that
some of the great receivers have,”
McGeoghan said. “But at the same time, he’s
still very unique.”
It makes you wonder, after everything
Landry has accomplished this season, what
can he could possibly for an encore in his sec-
ond season? One thing’s for sure: It’s going to
be fun to find out.

GAME PLAN TODAY’S MATCHUP | LAST TIME
By ALAIN POUPART
@apoupartFins
For the second consecutive year, the
Dolphins are closing out the regular
season with a game against the New
York Jets at Sun Life Stadium.
And for the second consecutive year,
the finale comes four weeks after thefirst meeting of the season between the
teams.
And for the second consecutive year,
the Dolphins beat the Jets at MetLife
Stadium.
But the Dolphins are hoping the sim-
ilarities end there and they can com-
plete their first season sweep of the Jetssince 2009 when they won 30-25 at East
Rutherford, New Jersey, and 31-27 in a
Monday night game at Sun Life
Stadium.
The Dolphins used a strong fourth
quarter to beat the Jets in the Monday
night game four weeks ago, putting up
10 unanswered points to rally from a 13-6 deficit.
The Jets come to Sun Life Stadium
today to wrap up what has been a disappoint-
ing season that began with a home victory
against the Oakland Raiders but was followed
by eight consecutive losses before the Jets
stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 10.
Despite their record, the Jets arrived inMiami as one of the top teams in the league
in the running game, both on offense and
defense.
Leading the way on defense is a strong
front seven, a group led by linemen Sheldon
Richardson, the 2013 NFL Defensive Rookie
of the Year, and Muhammad Wilkerson.
Wilkerson, who like Richardson was a first-
round pick, has been dealing with a foot
injury in the latter stages of the season.
The linebacking corps is led by veterans
David Harris and Calvin Pace, and also
includes yet another former first-round pick
Quinton Coples, a former defensive end at
the University of North Carolina. On offense, the Jets entered Week 16
ranked second in the NFL in both rushing
yards per game and per attempt.
The Jets gave the Dolphins problems with
their ground game on Dec. 1, with former
Tennessee Titans star Chris Johnson record-
ing his first 100-yard outing in a New York uni-
form.
Dolphins going for Jets sweep
Running back Chris Johnson joined the Jets this sea-
son after spending several seasons as a member of
the Tennessee Titans.

GAME DAY HEAD COACH’S CORNER
Q. How much has Lamar Miller
improved since he entered the
NFL?
I think he’s a little more decisive
when he has the ball in his hands. He’s
gotten a lot of reps. We’ve been doing
this since last April. The schemes, the
aiming points haven’t changed an
awful lot. I think he’s used his reps, that
experience in the system, in the
scheme, to his benefit. I just think he’s
made better decisions running with the
ball. It’s not always perfect, like the
quarterback is not ever perfect every
single time in decision-making, but(Miller) does a good job and I think he’s
done a better job (with) less shuffling,
less dancing, more running.
Q. How far has guard Billy Turner
come since starting the season?
He’s really progressed well. He’s
done a good job. He’s worked
extremely hard. He’s done an excellent
job in the weight room from a strength
and conditioning aspect. He’s in the
building a lot putting in extra time, and it’s
paid off. He’s getting better. I was just down
there today watching the one-on-ones, and
he’s improving without a doubt.
Q. Have you seen progress from Caleb
Sturgis?
I think there has been progress.
Obviously, you want to make every single
kick. When you are the coach and you send
the kicker out in the game, you want the ball
to go through the uprights every single time.
I think we’ve definitely seen some progress.
Q. What goes into the decision on how
many deep balls are thrown in a
game?
Each week on our game plan we have a
category called shots where potentially,
depending on what happens after the snap
of the football, there is a chance the ball
could go vertically down the field. I can’t pre-
dict that we are going to do it six times or we
are going to do it once. We may call five and
it only happens twice. It’s hard to say.
Head CoachJoe Philbin

Q. What went into the decision to acti-
vate tight end Gerell Robinson from
the practice squad?
We are always looking to improve ourfootball team in any way possible. We felt
like that’s the best decision for the best 53
guys at this point in time. He’s a quick learn-
er. He’s a real hard worker. He’s athletic. He
runs well. He’s competitive. He’s been com-
petitive in everything he’s done out here.
Q. How would you view Ryan Tannehill’sprogress this season?
I think his accuracy has improved. I think
his decision-making has improved. A lot of
the measurements of quarterbacks, his
quarterback rating is higher than it’s ever
been, so I think he’s making good progress.
I think the decision-making helps every-
thing else and it starts there. If you makegood decisions and make them in the
proper time, you can get the ball out faster,
you get better accuracy and so forth. I think
the decision-making has been the best
thing.
Q. What stands out about Jarvis Landry
during his rookie season?
He’s a good football player. He’s an
instinctive guy, a competitive guy. He’s gotgood hands. He’ll catch the ball going across
the middle, whether it’s down the middle, a
drag or crossing route, he’s got good change
of direction, his play speed is good. He’s
made a really good contribution so far.
Q. Why do you think this year’s rookie class
of wide receivers has been so successful?I remember from the draft process that
there just seemed to be a lot of good players
out there, and guys that are different body
types. Some guys are big targets that weren’t
maybe as fast as others, some guys were
smaller, quicker guys, some were fast guys. It
was a good crop of guys. I think the offensive
teams that drafted these players have utilizedthem well. I sure think that throwing the ball
more in college (helps). Again, I’ve been out
of college football for 12 years, but I think the
passing game is more advanced and I think
guys are probably better prepared.

Pro Career: Became the ninth coach in Dolphins history on January
20, 2012. Philbin joined Miami after serving as the offensive coor-
dinator with the Green Bay Packers from 2007-2011. During that
era, his offense ranked in the top 10 in points scored and total yards
every season. In five seasons at the helm of the Packers’ prolific
offense, the team scored 2,263 points (third in the NFL during that
span). In 2011, the Packers set franchise records for victories (15),
points (560) and total yards (6,357). The 560 points ranked secondin NFL history. In 2008-09, the Packers became the first team in
league annals to have a 4,000-yard passer (Aaron Rodgers), a
1,200-yard rusher (Ryan Grant) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Greg Jennings, Donald Driver) in con-
secutive seasons. Philbin joined the Packers in 2003 as an assistant offensive line coach. He served
as the tight ends/assistant offensive line coach from 2004-05 and offensive line coach in 2006.
Background: Philbin played one year at Washington & Jefferson, where he earned his degree in soci-
ology. He has coached collegiately at Tulane (1984-85), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1986-87),
Allegheny (1990-93), Ohio (1994), Northeastern (1995-96), Harvard (1997-98) and Iowa (1999-2002).

camp facility for a holiday toy event.
The team’s indoor practice bubble was

Before the kids received their gifts, the
players spent time with them playing
games, doing arts and crafts, and even held
a dance contest. The dance contest was one
of the highlights of the event as everyone
enjoyed themselves while the schools com-
peted against one another, showcasing their
best dance moves for games and prizes.
Then it was time for the gift giving.
“It’s wonderful to be a part of this and at
the same time I think back and reminisce on
all the Christmases that I had that went by
and there weren’t guys like myself and other
players to give back to you,” rookie wide
receiver Jarvis Landry said. “So being here
and being in this position there’s nothing
more fulfilling than being able to come out
here and see the smiles and the joy on
everybody’s faces and know that you’re a
part of that.”
Landry was joined at the event by 15 of
his teammates, including John Denney,
Terrence Fede, Brandon Fields, Jason Fox,
Brandon Gibson, Brian Hartline, T.J. Heath,
Ja’Wuan James, Reshad Jones, Jordan

When I think about “The
Clock Game,” the thing that
comes to mind the most to me is
not necessarily that play — and
that play was great in NFL history
— but it was the feeling of walk-
ing in that locker room at half-
time. In the old Meadowlands,
both teams have to walk through
the same tunnel.
We’re walking through that
tunnel with the Jets to our right
and we’re pissed off. We’re
upset. We’re frustrated that we’redown by multiple touchdowns
and they were shocked. They couldn’t believe that
they were ahead of us.
That was probably one of the loudest, most vocal
locker rooms. Coach (Don) Shula and Dan Marino got
up and talked and we had that feeling that we were
going to win that game. Somehow, someway we were
going to turn it around and win that football game
and the confidence walking back on the field, you
would have thought that we were up by 21 points the
way we took that field with the mentality and the
mind-set that we were going to win that game.
Now, the funny thing about that clock play was
that Dan didn’t tell us. Everyone knows, especially
back then before we executed that play, whenever he
says, “Clock,” everyone is like, just get up to the line
of scrimmage, get set so we don’t have any motion
penalties, they’re going to hike the ball and spike it.
Well, that’s what he said to us: “Clock.” He didn’t say,
“Hey, I’m running a fake clock play.” We didn’t have a
call for the fake clock play. That was a play that Bernie
(Kosar) and he worked on.
Dan was a master of hand signals and he commu-
nicated so well with Mark Ingram that honestly I think
they were the only two or three people in the entire
stadium, counting Coach Shula, who knew that he
was actually going to try that. The corner, Aaron
Glenn, was backed off and he threw a perfect pass
and the rest is history.
When I watch the replays of it I get down and I
kind of just stand up and look back because that’s
what you do on the spike play. The guy on Ron Heller
actually tried to rush and almost batted the ball down,
so I think it was smart for Dan not to tell us because
we’re not good actors.
When you’re thinking about having to block the
guy just in case because you’re not sure if he’s going
to get the ball off, that might not work. You want to
kind of sell it as far as giving yourself up. I certainly
gave myself up and Richmond Webb gave himself up,
so a bunch of their guys didn’t really rush and they
were looking for the next play. The next thing you
know the crowd erupts and we win.
I am so happy that I can look back and when they
run the top plays in NFL history see that I was involved
in a couple of those games. But for everything that we
went through in that game and the fact that it was a
playoff game for us, I’d have to rank the fake spike
game as probably my most fun game to remember
back in my career. What we had to overcome to win
that football game and the confidence, I was never
prouder to be a Dolphin than at that moment.

1. The Dolphins have been looking for
a prototypical tight end for a long time,
one who can catch as well as he can
block. Are you that player?
DS: Yes, absolutely. I’m developing into
being that guy. I’m continuing to get better.
That sounds about right to me.
2. It was early in the game against the
Jets. A linebacker was blitzing and was
about to flatten Ryan Tannehill. At the
last moment, you level the blitzing player
with a ferocious block. Tell us how that
felt and how important is it to your
overall game?
DS: Blocking is an important part of my
game. Blocking made that play go. Watching
it on film, I did a good job of coming back and
getting that blitzing linebacker. I looked at it a
couple of times on tape. It was nice to watch
over and over. I take a lot of pride in that. You
have to protect the quarterback. That’s part of
my job.
3. Can you make a case that playing
tight end is one of the most demanding
positions in football?
DS: Absolutely. Next to quarterback, I
would say playing tight end is
the most demanding posi-
tion. You have to be
versatile. You have
to play all different
positions. It’s like a

hybrid of a wide receiver/fullback/lineman.
We have a lot in the game plan to take in.
4. It seems like you are a different
player this year. How have you managedto step up in your second season, and
what have you done differently?
DS: I focused on a lot of things last offsea-
son. I worked to refine my game. I came in
with a lot more confidence this season and
with a real purpose. I watched a lot of film, did
a lot of reps. I knew I could contribute to this
team. I knew I could contribute more than Idid as a rookie. I just had to go out and prove
it.
5. Your locker is two down from Ryan
Tannehill. You are the only receiver in
the vicinity of his locker. C’mon, level
with us, does that give you an opportu-
nity to lobby for more balls thrown your
way?
DS: I know Tannehill has a lot on his
plate. I’m just going to be patient. I’m not
the type of guy who stays in his ear. I want
to be that safety valve for him. I want him
to know he can trust me. The way I can
get there is by doing my job on Sundays,
not by asking him to throw me more pass-
es.
6. You were a fourth-round pick out of
Michigan State. How do you react to
those who doubted your ability?
DS: There are always doubters in the
world, people pulling against you. You can’t
let it get to you. You can’t let it change you. As
long as you believe in yourself and come out
with the right mind-set, you’ll be fine. I truth-
fully could care less what other people think
about me.
7. You averaged 21 points and 9
rebounds a game in high school basket-
ball. What kind of game did you have,
and did Tom Izzo at Michigan State ever
make a run at you?
DS: I was a finesse-type basketball
player. I was a shooter, a solid 3-point
shooter. I didn’t have an explosive game,
kind of like a quiet scorer. I played all fivepositions. In my freshman year of college, I
did get a chance to play a little basketball
for Izzo after our bowl game. It was pretty
cool. It’s hard to say if I’m better at basket-
ball or football, but I know I made the right
choice.
8. Tell us what Dion Sims is like away
from football, your passions?DS: I like to go to the beach and to the
movies and to go shopping. I have a daugh-
ter that I try to see as much as I can. Oh
yeah, I just bought a puppy a few weeks
ago. Her name is Bailey. It’s something I
wanted to try and something that would
keep me on a routine. I’ve always wanted a
dog. Next to my mom and my daughter,
she’s my favorite girl.
9. It’s the offseason and you can eat
anything you want; what can’t you get
enough of?
DS: Seafood. I love seafood. I can eat it all
day. Crab legs. Lobster tails. Shrimp. Scallops.
You name a seafood, and I love it. That was
one of the benefits of getting drafted by the
Dolphins. You can’t beat the seafood down
here.
10. You look around the league and
there are so many great tight ends.
Who do you want to be like, and what
needs to happen for you to reach that
level?
DS: I don’t want to be like anybody. I want
to be myself. I want to create my own identity
and be my type of player. But guys like Tony
Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, guys who have
been successful for so long, I would love to be
able to follow in their footsteps. If I work hard,
I know I can get there. I believe that in my
heart.

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: THE FAKE SPIKE GAME
By DAN MARINO
Twenty years ago, Dan Marino faked out
an entire stadium, threw perhaps the most memorable pass of his career and brought
his archrivals to their knees. It all took place
within a few seconds.
Trailing 24-6 with 3:30 remaining in the
third quarter, Marino took aim at the Jets’
defense, throwing four touchdown passes
and amassing 265 of his 359 total yards in the
second half. Wide receiver Mark Ingramcaught all four of the second-half touch-
downs, the last one coming on the now-
famous fake spike play, to give the Dolphins
an epic 28-24 victory.
Marino shared his recollections of the
Fake Spike Game with contributing writer
Alfred Santasiere III over dinner at Anthony’s
Coal Fired Pizza in Fair Lawn, New Jersey,
one of the Italian restaurant’s 50 locations.
◆◆◆
When I think back on my life on the foot-
ball field, the Fake Spike Game is one of
the memories that comes to my mind first.
It’s the game I’m asked about more than any
other, especially when I’m back here in NewJersey. It seems like all the Jets fans in here
today want to talk about is that game, and I
keep telling them it’s time to move on. Life’s
too short to still be thinking about that
game.
Of course, for me and the many Dolphins
fans who still remember that win, the fake spike
serves as a wonderful memory that will live inour minds forever, and that’s a great thing.
I first heard about the fake spike play dur-
ing our 1994 training camp. Bernie Kosar,
who the Dolphins had signed to be my back-
up before that season, brought the idea of
the fake spike with him from Cleveland. I
thought it was an interesting idea, and so did
Coach Don Shula and the rest of the staff.
Once we all heard about the play, we began
practicing it a few times a week that summer
and throughout the season. We knew that we

could only use the play
one time, and we wanted
to make sure it was the
perfect time.
We almost used it in a
game earlier that season
against the Minnesota
Vikings. We were trying to
execute the play during
the end of that game, but
one of our linemen
jumped offsides, and it
never happened.
Every game against a
division rival is huge, and
because of all the history we had against the
Jets, my desire to beat them became part of
my internal makeup. The fact that we needed
to win that game to stay on top of our divi-sion only added to the intensity that day.
Even though things didn’t go well in the
first half, we went into the locker room feeling
pretty good about things. We had turned the
ball over three times, and we were only down
by 10 points. We felt good about our chances
to come back. I remember telling our players
that we were a good enough team, with morethan enough offensive weapons to come
back and win the game.
Unfortunately, Boomer Esiason had a few
pretty good weapons as well, and the Jets
got the ball at the start of the second half.
They wasted no time in taking the ball down
the field and scoring a touchdown. Now, we
were facing a 17-0 deficit. Our mentality at that point was to throw
the ball on every down until we were winning.
That’s what I had done in games like this
since I was a kid, and I didn’t know any other
way to do it.
When we got the ball back, we began run-
ning the no-huddle offense. Mark Ingram
caught a pass at the Jets’ 1-yard line on third
down. He broke a tackle and scored our first
touchdown. We were now trailing 17-6.
Even though we missed the two-point
conversion, we were within striking distance.
The Jets knew I was going to throw the ballon every play, and I was still able to move up
the field. That gave us a lot of confidence.
We felt that if we could do it once, we could
do it a few more times.
Boomer wasn’t done scoring, though.
With a few seconds left in the third quarter,
the Jets scored another touchdown, making
the score 24-6.
I had been in situations like that before,
and I still believed we could come back. But
at the same time, I knew that we couldn’t
afford to make any more mistakes. We had to
play a perfect fourth quarter. I also knew that
I had to remain confident, because as the
quarterback, your teammates look to you for
confidence. If you’re walking around the side-
line with your head down, you have no
chance. I grew up with that attitude and,
more than ever, I needed it on that day.
We turned it loose on the next drive. I
took all but one snap from the shotgun for-
mation, and I completed five of the six pass-

es I threw, including the last one to Ingram for
a touchdown.
As the final seconds of the third quarter
were ticking down, we were losing 24-14.Our great cornerback, Troy Vincent, inter-
cepted a pass from Boomer on the Jets’ next
possession, and that’s when the momentum
began to change. I couldn’t wait to get back
onto the field, and I knew we had to score
right then and there.
I completed five passes in a row, the last of
which was to Ingram for our third touchdown. Now, we were only down 24-21.
After exchanging a few punts, we got the
ball back on our own 16-yard line with 2:34
remaining in the game.
As I walked onto the field, I reminded our
guys that we had plenty of time, and that we
had done this several times before.
I connected with Irving Fryar on the first
play for 18 yards. The Jets were playing a pre-
vent defense, and Fryar was wide open in the
middle of the field. After that, I completed a
short pass to Keith Jackson, bringing us up to
the 50-yard line with 1:50 left.
With the Jets still in the prevent defense, I
found Mike Williams on a post route for a 22-
yard gain. That brought us up to the Jets’ 28-
yard line with 1:24 left. After that, I threw two
short passes to Ingram. As Ingram caught the
second one, he was tackled in bounds, at the
8-yard line, with 35 seconds remaining.
As I ran up to the line of scrimmage, Bernie
Kosar, who I was listening to in the headset
within my helmet, was yelling, “Clock play,
clock play, clock play.” I knew it was the perfect
time to try it, because if it didn’t work, we still
had a few more downs to either score a touch-
down or to tie the game with a field goal.
When I got to the line, I was screaming,
“Clock,” which quarterbacks yell out to signal
that they are going to spike the ball. But we
had something else planned, and my guys
knew what was up. I was going to run the fake
spike play, and I could immediately tell that
the Jets players thought that I was actually
going to spike the football and stop the
clock. I could tell that they had no intensity as
they waited for me to snap the ball. They
looked different to me than on any other play.
Ingram looked over at me and I nodded my
head at him. I snapped the ball, faked the
spike and threw a quick pass to Ingram near
the sideline. Ironically, (Jets cornerback)
Aaron Glenn, who was covering Ingram, was
the only guy who realized what we were
doing, but he realized it too late.
Ingram caught the ball in the end zone with
22 seconds left, and I began jumping up and
down. That was an emotional moment
because of how far we had come back from.
When I got to the sideline, I realized that it was
completely silent in Giants Stadium, and all
the fans were leaving. That was very satisfying.
After that game, the Jets only won four out
of their next 36 games, and since I’m retired
now, I will take some of the credit for that.
Being back in New Jersey and only a few
miles from where Giants Stadium once stood
brings back a lot of great memories from that
day. The fake spike play is as famous as it is
because we did it against the Jets and
because we came back from so many points
down that day. If we weren’t playing our divi-
sion rivals on the road or if we hadn’t come
back from a 24-6 deficit, the Fake Spike
Game would have been much less special.

MY GENERATION THIS WEEK: DEFENSIVE ENDS AS TOLD TO JON COPE
1. Who is the toughest offensive lineman
you have faced?
Not to say I’m cocky or anything, but it’s
usually not the person, it’s usually the
scheme. There are a lot of things you can
do to keep from getting to the quarter-
back. So I’d say schemes are usually harder
to deal with than actual O-linemen.
2. Who sets the bar at your position?
Either DeMarcus Ware or Jared Allen,
whichever one of them has the most sacks
in the last four years or since I came into
the league.
3. What player did you admire growing up?
I wouldn’t say growing up because I did-
n’t watch any football growing up. As I
started to learn and play football I’d have
to say Jason Taylor. When you think about
the guy, he’s moderately attractive, young,
he’s stylish, and in Miami. Here I am. I’m a
moderately attractive, good-looking guy
down here in Miami trying to do my thing.
4. What has been the most memorable
moment of your career?
It would probably be my first Pro Bowl. I
went from sitting on the couch for two
years to starting in a Pro Bowl, so that really
is the tops.
5. What coach had the biggest influenceon your playing career?
I’ve got to go back to high school
where I had a guy, Dennis Golden, who I
think is now coaching up in
Massachusetts. He basically dragged me
off the basketball court. He looked at me
like, “You’re a football player. You’re ath-
letic, you’ve got it, you can run, you can
jump and you could probably go to col-
lege playing basketball but you could
make a living playing football.” He was
like, “Just come out. Just try it and the
worst thing that can happen is if you don’t
like it you can go back to playing basket-
ball.” I literally fell in love with it.

THE LAST WORD BY ANDY COHEN
Once a season I like to take you on a tour
of the Dolphins training camp locker room.
It’s normally just for the players. But three
times a week, for about 45 minutes a visit, the
Dolphins let the media inside.Today, I’m letting you inside. Please, no
autographs are allowed and you’ve got to
give these players some space. This is their
home for so much of the work week and
you’ve got to respect that.
“The loosest locker room I’ve ever been
around,” said tight end Charles Clay.
So let’s see what’s going on:
• You’ve got to start with the cornhole
game in the middle of the locker room. You
know where you throw a beanbag — or try to
throw a beanbag — through a little hole
about 10 yards away? This is a new additionto the locker room this season. The players
love this. And most of them are pretty good
at it. Today you’ve got linebacker Jason
Trusnik taking on all challengers.
Trusnik is the self-proclaimed king. “Call
me Mr. Big Shot,” he says with a hearty laugh.

Jimmy Wilson is first in line. Then Chris
McCain. Everybody wants a shot. Just don’t
get in the way of one of those throws. The
stares will cut a hole through you.• Let’s drift over to Cameron Wake’s lock-
er. It’s usually crowded because everyone
likes to hear what Wake has to say. Today
there is music blaring from a speaker. I’m not
hip enough to tell you what song it was, but
it did have a nice beat to it. Wake is always
willing to talk, always pleasant, always has
something thought-provoking on his mind.“You gain so much wisdom as the years
increase. It’s like the game slows down. You
develop an inner belief of knowing what’s
coming,” Wake is telling a reporter.
• Across from Wake’s locker is where the
quarterbacks dress. But there is something
odd about those lockers because situated
right between quarterback Ryan Tannehill andMatt Moore is tight end Dion Sims. How did
he get there? A second-year tight end within
whispering distance of Tannehill and Moore?
“Not really sure,” Sims says.
But think how Sims can use that to his
advantage, perhaps politicking for more balls
thrown in his direction. “Didn’t think of that,”
he says. “A good idea.”
• I always get a kick out Nate Garner, who
sits by his locker and often has to move out of
the way when a crush of reporters approach-
es Mike Wallace a few feet away. “Can I have
a little space,” Garner says to nobody in par-
ticular. And nobody in particular listens. So
Garner just shrugs and smiles. An interesting
guy Nate Garner is. He just as soon will tell
you about growing up in Tornado Alley as he
does talking about a double-team block.
• The locker room is filled with various
motivational sayings. On one wall you’ll see
the team’s credo, which was printed on T-
shirts during the offseason. Then there’s a
sign in the back of the locker room that sim-
ply says: “Respect” and “Communicate.”
Another wall has words that say: “One team.
One fight. Win the day.” These are messages
that the coaches want the players to see on a
daily basis, to think about the meaning and
to put those words into use.
One player tells me: “I read all the signs
every day.” Guess you could say, mission
accomplished.
• Over there, near the back of the locker
room, placekicker Caleb Sturgis is sitting qui-
etly at his locker working on his iPad. Sturgis is
just a few feet away from his holder, Brandon
Fields, and his snapper, John Denney. Good
way to build a little chemistry, just for kicks.
• Jared Odrick’s locker is always a busy
intersection. The big guy enjoys putting
things in perspective and really enjoys bust-
ing your chops, a nice one-two combination.
A few feet away, rookie tackle Ja’Wuan James
is watching Odrick hold court. “I like to lis-
ten,” he says. “You can always learn.”
The 45 minutes are over. The locker room
is quickly clearing out. There are meetings to
attend and tape to watch. The bean bags
from the cornhole game are resting peaceful-
ly on the floor. The loud music is no more
and the talking has stopped. The tour is over,
so please exit in an orderly fashion.
“We love it in here,” said Clay. “It’s a great
place to bond.”
