    Brick Gothic

    Backsteingotic/ Lombard Gothic/ Gotyc Celgany

North Germany and countries around the Baltic sea

Use of brick due to lack of building stones

Also encompasses non-brick Gothic structures, which is mostly stone-built

    Lack of figural architectural sculpture

Colour contrast between red bricks, glazed bricks and white lime plaster

Bulky and of monumental size, but rather simple as regards their external

    appearance

Hall church: a special characteristic of Brick Gothic

Nave and aisles are approx. the same height

    Absence of triforium and clerestory

    Flying buttresses were unnecessary

Single western tower or western apse

Entrances are often on north or south instead of west

Immense roof, covering nave and aisles in one span
