Finisher-AK1 and Saddle Finisher-AK2 can process jobs with the following settings:• Sort by set• Sort by page• Offset stacking• Stapling• High-volume mode• Saddle stitching (only when Saddle Finisher-AK2 is installed)• Saddle folding (only when Saddle Finisher-AK2 is installed)• Punching (only when Puncher Unit-BT1/BU1 is installed)

NOTE• If you use paper weights lower than 64 g/m² (17 lb bond) for covers, the paper can crease

when saddle-stitched.• If you use paper weights lower than 64 g/m² (17 lb bond) for covers when the Booklet Trimmer

is installed, the paper may be trimmed with uneven edges.• When you use small paper, the paper may be saddle stitched with uneven edges. In this case,

check the width of the paper.• When you use small paper, the paper may be stapled (corner/double) with uneven edges. In

this case, check the width of the paper.• When you use small paper, and the Booklet Trimmer is used, the paper may be trimmed with

uneven edges. In this case, check the width of the paper.• If you create a saddle-stitched booklet using coated paper or inserted sheets for the cover, the

can get damaged.• Do not place anything under the trays of the finisher. Otherwise, the trays can get damaged.

[4] Do not place your hands in the part of the tray where stapling is performed (near the rollers) when a finisher isattached, as this may result in personal injury.

Sort by set mode

Prints are automatically collated into sets arranged in page order (123, 123, for example).

Sort by page mode

All prints of the same original page are grouped together (111, 222, 333, for example).

Offset stacking mode

The printed output is shifted alternately to the front and back of the tray, in a vertical (portrait)orientation, or a horizontal (landscape) orientation, depending on the orientation of youroriginals. For example, if you place A4R or LTRR originals, the paper is output and shifted in thehorizontal direction. If you place A4 or LTR originals, the paper is output and shifted in the verticaldirection.

When you use the Offset stacking mode while Sort by set or Sort by page is selected, then eachset of prints is shifted the following amount before it is delivered to the output tray:• No staple: Each set is shifted 20 mm (3/4"), except for A4R media. For A4R, the set is shifted 15

mm (0.6")

• Corner staple: Each set is shifted 20 mm (3/4").• Double staple: Each set is shifted 20 mm (3/4").

NOTEIn the following cases, problems can occur, for example the output is not aligned correctly or theoutput falls from the tray.• If you use thin paper (due to the temperature, humidity, characteristics of the paper type, or

paper curling).• If you use the machine in high temperatures or high humidity.• If you use coated paper, tab paper, or other special paper.• If the paper is curled.• If the Punch mode is set.• When the [High-volume mode enabled] setting is set to [Yes] (due to the temperature,

humidity, characteristics of the paper type, or paper curling).• When the [High-volume mode enabled] setting is set to [Yes], and the output paper stack

exceeds the maximum stack volume of the tray (depending on the paper type or thefunctional mode that you use, the output paper can exceed the stacking limit).

Staple mode

Prints are automatically sorted by set and stapled. When you carry out a copy job, the prints arestapled at the following positions:

IMPORTANT• If the Staple mode is set, the output trays move downward as the stack of paper that is output

increases in quantity and thickness. When an output tray has reached its stacking limit, orafter 100 sets of prints or the predefined height has been output, printing and stapling stoptemporarily. Remove all of the stapled prints from the output tray, and printing and staplingresume.

• You cannot output a stapled set of prints to the upper tray.• You cannot staple transparencies or labels.• Do not pull copies or prints out of the output area while they are being stapled. Remove the

copies or prints after they are output to one of the output trays.

NOTE• Staple-N1 is standard on Finisher-AK1.• Staple-N1 and Staple-P1 are standard on Saddle Finisher-AK2.• If you want to staple more than 50 sheets (80 g/m² / 20 lb bond) of A3/Tabloid or A4R/LTRR

paper, or 100 sheets (80 g/m² / 20 lb bond) of A4/LTR paper, the prints are only offset but notstapled. In addition, when you select coated or heavy paper, you may not be able to staple thejob, even if the number of sheets, including sheet insertions or job separators, is below the setlimit of a finisher.

• When the machine stops while stapling and a message on the control panel asks you to refillthe staplers, you must replace the staple cartridge.

Saddle stitch mode

The Saddle stitch mode enables you to make booklets, consisting of pages that are folded andstapled in the centre.

If you use Puncher Unit-BU1, the distance between the punch holes is shown in the illustrationbelow (four holes).

Saddle fold mode

This is a mode for folding multiple sheets in 2-folds.

304.8 mm × 457.2 mm (12" x 18"), 320 × 450 mm (12.6" x 17.7") (SRA3), 330.2 mm × 482.6 mm(13" x 19"), and custom sizes (210 mm × 279.4 mm to 330.2 mm × 487.7 mm / 8.3" x 11" to 13"x 19.2").

NOTEYou can only use the booklet tray when Saddle Finisher-AK2 is installed.

High-volume mode

The Settings Editor on the PRISMAsync controller contains a [High-volume mode enabled]setting. When this setting is set to [Yes] the upper tray and the lower tray of the stacker/staplerwill be linked to increase the output capacity for non-stapled jobs. The total output capacity willbecome 5,000 sheets for 80 g/m² / 20 lb bond media (3,000 sheets in the upper tray and 2,000sheets in the lower tray).

NOTEThe mode is not active when trimmer D1 is present.

• You can still select the lower tray or upper tray as desired output location but the systemignores the choice.

• First the lower tray will be filled, then the upper tray.• When both trays are full, you must first empty the trays before printing continues.• When stapling is required, the trays will be filled to their normal capacity (3,000 sheets).

Use the joggers in the output trays

Introduction

The upper and lower trays of the stacker/stapler contain 2 joggers. The joggers make sure that thestacks in the output trays are perfectly straight.

Possible jogger settings

In the Settings Editor, you can define when to use the joggers ([Preferences] -> [Print job defaults]-> [Stacker/stapler]).

[Joggers] setting Description

[Always On] The joggers will always work.

[Off for mixed media sizes] The joggers will be disabled automatically when a printjob contains a mix of different media sizes.

[Always Off] The joggers will never work. This can be recommendedif the joggers cause pollution on the prints, for example.

Check the status of the staple cartridges

Introduction

The stacker/stapler is the output location that can staple printed documents before these aredelivered into an output tray. Before each of the following output trays, 2 staplers are present:• The upper tray.• The lower tray.• The booklet tray (optional).

The booklet tray is only available when your stacker/stapler is equipped with the optionalsaddle stitch unit.

When all the staple cartridges are sufficiently filled, the staple icon in the dashboard is blue.When the staple icon in the dashboard is orange or red, one of the staple cartridges is empty oralmost empty. You must refill the staple cartridge as soon as possible.

To find out which staple cartridge is empty or almost empty, you must go to the [Printer] sectionof the [System] view. The icon for the staple cartridge that must be refilled is orange or red.

NOTEEven when the staple icon is blue, you can still go to the [System] view to check the number ofstaples that has been used since the last refill.

Staple icon Description

A blue staple icon indicates that all the staple cartridges contain suffi-cient staples.

An orange staple icon indicates that one of the staple cartridges is al-most empty.

A red staple icon indicates that one of the staple cartridges is empty.The printer stops when a job requires staples from the empty staplecartridge.

1. Check the staple icon in the dashboard.2. When the staple icon is orange or red, go to the [Printer] section of the [System] view to check

which staple cartridge must be refilled.



Replace the staple cartridge of the stapler unit (StapleN1)

Introduction

When a staple cartridge of the stapler unit inside the stacker/stapler is empty, the control panelwill display a message indicating which staple cartridge must be replaced. The procedure belowdescribes how to replace the staple cartridge.

Introduction

When a staple cartridge of the saddle stitch unit of the optional Saddle Finisher is almost empty,the control panel will display a message indicating which staple cartridge must be replaced. Theprocedure below describes how to replace the staple cartridge.

NOTEThis procedure is only necessary when the Saddle Finisher is attached.

2 Pull out the saddle stitch unit.

3 Grab the tab of the staple case and pullthe staple case out of the staple unit.

4 Hold the cover of the staple case by itsleft and right sidesLift the cover and slide the cover off.

5 Squeeze at the indicated positions to re-lease the empty staple cartridge.Lift the empty staple cartridge and pullthe staple cartridge out.

6 Insert the new staple cartridge (StapleP1).

NOTEWhen you replace the staplecartridges, replace both thefront and back staple cartridges.

7 Return the staple case to its original posi-tion in the saddle stitch unit.Make sure that the arrow on the staplecase aligns with the arrow on the saddlestitch unit.

NOTEFollow the steps 3 to 7 to re-place the other staple cartridgein the saddle stitch unit.

8 Gently push the saddle stitch unit back in-to the printer.

9 Close the front door of the stacker/stapler.

CAUTIONWhen you close the front doorof the stacker/stapler, be care‐ful not to get your fingerscaught, because this may resultin personal injury.

Remove the puncher waste box

CAUTIONBe careful when you handle optional units that are attached to the machine. When you openthe door or cover of an optional unit to replace a staple cartridge, discard the punch waste, orclear paper jams or staple jams, prints may still be output if other optional units are operatingnormally, and are not involved in the paper or staple jam removal procedure.

NOTEWhen the puncher waste box is full, you cannot use the punch function when you perform acopy job or print job.

2 Pull out the puncher waste box.

3 Discard the punch waste into a commondustbin.

4 Put the puncher waste box back.Make sure that you insert the puncherwaste box as far as possible.

NOTEIf the puncher waste box is notsecurely in place, you cannotuse the punch function whenyou carry out a copy job or printjob. 4



Chapter 4 Troubleshooting

Introduction

If a paper jam occurs in the stacker/stapler, the control panel will display the location of the paperjam and a procedure to clear the paper jam. The procedure contains references to the errorlocations you must check, for example A1 or A2. The illustration below shows an overview of allthe error locations.

Clear a paper jam in the top cover of the stacker/stapler

Introduction

If a paper jam occurs in the top cover of the stacker/stapler (Finisher-AK1/Saddle Finisher-AK2),the control panel will display the location of the paper jam and the procedure to clear the paperjam. Follow the instructions on the control panel to clear the paper jam. The procedure belowdescribes how to clear a paper jam in the top cover of the stacker/stapler.

CAUTION• When you remove jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges

of the originals or paper.• When you remove jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your hands on the inside

of the machine. If you cannot remove the paper, contact your local authorised dealer.• Be careful when you handle the optional units that are attached to the machine. When you

open the door or cover of an optional unit to replace a staple cartridge, discard the punchwaste, or clear paper jams or staple jams, prints may still be output if other optional units areoperating normally, and are not involved in the paper or staple jam removal procedure.

NOTEIf the inserter (Document Insertion Unit-F1) is adjacently attached to the stacker/stapler, the partof the inserter may interfere with the stacker/stapler when you clear jams. Lift up the inserterbefore you clear jams in the stacker/stapler.

2 Press the button (F-A1) on the optionalPuncher Unit-BT1/BU1, as far as possible.

NOTEThis procedure is only requiredwhen the optional PuncherUnit-BT1/BU1 is attached.

3 Open the guide (F-A2).

4 Remove any jammed paper.

5 Close the guide (F-A2).

CAUTIONWhen you close the guide, becareful not to get your fingerscaught, because this may resultin personal injury.

6 Open the top cover (F-A3) of the stacker/stapler.

CAUTIONOpen the top cover slowly, be‐cause opening the top covertoo fast may result in personalinjury.

IMPORTANTDo not turn OFF the main powerswitch of the stacker/staplerwhen you open the top cover(F-A3) to remove the jammedpaper. If you do so accidentally,follow the procedures to turnOFF the main power switches ofthe attached optional equip-ments and the machine, andthen back ON.

11 Close the top cover (F-A3) of the stacker/stapler.

CAUTIONWhen you close the top cover,be careful not to get your fin‐gers caught, as this may resultin personal injury.

IMPORTANT• After closing the top cover,

press down on the top coverat the locations indicated bythe labels, to make sure thecover is securely closed.

• Do not turn OFF the mainpower switch of the stacker/stapler when you close thetop cover. If you do so acci-dentally, follow the proce-dures to turn OFF the mainpower switches of the attach-ed optional units and the ma-chine, and then back ON.

Follow the procedure on the control panel toclear the paper jam. The procedure below describes how to clear a paper jam inside the stacker/stapler.

2 Open the guide (F-B1).

3 Turn the dial (F-B2) in the direction of thearrow (clockwise).

6 Turn the dial F-B4 in the direction of thearrow (clockwise) and then the dial F-B3in the direction of the arrow (clockwise) tofeed the jammed paper to the output slot.

7 Open the output slot (F-B5), and removeany jammed paper.

2 Open the guide (F-C1).

3 Turn the upper dial (F-C2) in the directionof the arrow (clockwise), to feed the jam-med paper to the guide (F-C1).

4 Turn the lower dial (F-C2) in the directionof the arrow (counterclockwise), to feedthe jammed paper to the guide (F-C1).


6 Close the guide (F-C1).

7 If the lamp is ON, while pushing in the di-al (F-C3), turn it in the direction of the ar-row (clockwise) until the lamp turns off.Turning the dial, feed the jammed paperto the delivery guide of the booklet tray.If the optional trimmer (Booklet Trimmer-D1) is attached, turning the dial feeds thejammed paper to the feeding belt of thetrimmer.

NOTEIf the lamp is OFF, proceed tostep 9.

8 Remove any jammed paper protrudingfrom the booklet tray.

NOTEIf the optional trimmer (BookletTrimmer-D1) is attached, re-move any jammed paper pro-truding from the feeding belt. 4




9 Pull out the saddle stitch unit (F-C4).

10 Open the right-hand cover of the saddlestitch unit (F-C5), and remove any jam-med paper.

11 Close the right-hand cover of the saddlestitch unit (F-C5).

CAUTIONWhen you close the right-handcover of the saddle stitch unit,be careful not to get your fin‐gers caught, as this may resultin personal injury.

12 Turn the dial on the pressing unit (F-C6) inthe direction of the arrow (counterclock-wise), and push it as far left as possible.

NOTE• If the pressing unit is in its

correct position, this proce-dure is unnecessary.

• The pressing unit ensures aclean fold in the centre of thepaper to create a booklet. Ifthe pressing unit is not in itscorrect position, the paper tobe saddle stitched cannot befed to the booklet tray.

13 While pushing in the dial (F-C7), turn it inthe direction of the arrow (clockwise) untilthe lamp turns off. Remove any jammedpaper.

14 Open the delivery guide (F-C8), and re-move any jammed paper.

15 Close the delivery guide (F-C8).

16 Gently push the saddle stitch unit (F-C4)back into the printer.

CAUTIONWhen you return the saddlestitch unit to its original posi‐tion, be careful not to get yourfingers caught, because thismay result in personal injury.

Clear a staple jam inside the stapler unit

2 Remove the paper waiting to be stapledfrom the output tray.

3 Pull out the staple case.

NOTEWhen the stapler unit is at theback and it is difficult to pull outthe staple case, turn the dial onthe bottom left-hand side to theleft to move the stapler unit.

4 Push up the bracket on the staple case.

5 Remove all of the jammed and protrudingstaples from the staple cartridge.

6 Return the bracket on the staple case toits original position.

7 Gently push the staple case back into thestapler unit until it is securely in place.

NOTEAlways make sure to insert thestaple case as far as possible.

2 Pull out the saddle stitch unit (F-C4).

3 Pull out the staple case from the saddlestitch unit.

4 Hold the staple case by its left-hand andright-hand sides, and lower the bracket onthe staple case.

5 Remove the jammed staples from the sta-ple cartridge.

6 Return the bracket on the staple case toits original position.

7 Return the staple case to its original posi-tion in the saddle stitch unit. Make sure toalign the arrow on the staple case withthe arrow on the saddle stitch unit, asshown below.

NOTEWhen you return the staplecase, always make sure to insertthe staple case until the arrowsare aligned as shown in the il-lustration.

8 Gently push the saddle stitch unit (F-C4)back into the printer.
