Charging the Battery
The battery is not charged at shipment. Charge the battery beore use.
1 Place the battery in the charger.Insert the battery into the supplied battery
charger as shown, making sure that thebattery is in the correct orientation.

Cautions: Caring or the Battery
Do not a x stickers or other objects to the battery. Failure to observe this precaution could make it
impossible to remove the battery rom the camera.
Do not short the battery terminals. The battery could overheat. Use only NP-45 batteries. Failure to observe this precaution could result in product malunction.
Do not remove the labels rom the battery or attempt to split or peel the outer casing.
The battery gradually loses its charge when not in use. Charge the battery one or two days beore use.
Read the supplied documentation or additional cautions concerning battery use.
Caution: Battery Lie
A noticeable decrease in the length o time the battery will hold a charge indicates that it has reached the end
o its service lie and should be replaced.
Cautions: Using the Battery Charger
Unplug the charger when it is not in use.
Remove dirt rom the battery terminals with a clean, dry cloth. Failure to observe this precaution could
prevent the battery rom charging.
Charging times increase at low temperatures.

Ater charging the battery, insert it in the camera as described below.
1 Open the battery-chamber cover.

battery-chamber cover.
Cautions
Do not turn the camera on or o while the
battery-chamber cover is open. Failure to
observe this precaution could result in damage
to image fles or memory cards.
Do not use excessive orce when handling the
battery-chamber cover.

NOT use orce or attempt to insert the battery
upside down or backwards. The battery willslide in easily in the correct orientation.

Inserting a Memory Card
Although the camera can store pictures in internal memory, SD memory cards (sold separately) can
be used to store additional pictures.
When no memory card is inserted,d appears in the monitor and internal memory is used or recording
and playback. Note that because camera malunction could cause internal memory to becomecorrupted, the pictures in internal memory should periodically be transerred to a computer and
saved on the computer hard disk or on removable media such as CDs or DVDs. The pictures in
internal memory can also be copied to a memory card (see page 75). To prevent internal memory
rom becoming ull, be sure to delete pictures when they are no longer needed.
When a memory card is inserted as described below, the card will be used or recording and playback.
Compatible Memory CardsCompatible Memory CardsSanDisk SD and SDHC memory cards have been tested and approved or use in the camera. A
complete list o approved memory cards is available at http://www.ujiilm.com/products/digital_
cameras/index.html. Operation is not guaranteed with other cards. The camera can not be used with
MultiMediaCard (MMC) orxD-Picture cards.
Caution
SD memory cards can be locked, making it impossible to ormat the cardor to record or delete images. Beore inserting an SD memory card, slide
the write-protect switch to the unlocked position.

Removing Memory Cards
Be sure the camera is o beore opening the battery-
chamber cover. Press the card in and then release it
slowly. The card can now be removed by hand.
Cautions The memory card may spring out i you remove
your fnger immediately ater pushing the card in.
Memory cards may be warm to the touch ater
being removed rom the camera. This is normal
and does not indicate a malunction.
Cautions
Format SD memory cards beore frst use, and be
sure to reormat all memory cards ater using them
in a computer or other device. For more inormationon ormatting memory cards, see page 85.
Memory cards are small and can be swallowed;
keep out o reach o children. I a child swallows a
memory card, seek medical assistance immediately.
Do not use miniSD or microSD adapters
that expose the back o the card. Failure
to observe this precaution may cause
damage or malunction. Adapters thatare larger or smaller than the standard
dimensions o an SD card may not eject normally; i
the card does not eject, take the camera to an
authorized service representative. Do not orcibly
remove the card.
Do not turn the camera o or remove the memory
card while the memory card is being ormatted ordata are being recorded to or deleted rom the card.
Failure to observe this precaution could damage the
card.
Do not a x labels to memory cards. Peeling labels
can cause camera malunction.
Movie recording may be interrupted with some
types o SD memory card.

The data in internal memory may be erased or
corrupted when the camera is repaired. Please note
that the repairer will be able to view pictures in
internal memory.
Formatting a memory card or internal memory
in the camera creates a older in which pictures
are stored. Do not rename or delete this older or
use a computer or other device to edit, delete, or
rename image fles. Always use the camera to delete
pictures rom memory cards and internal memory;
beore editing or renaming fles, copy them to a
computer and edit or rename the copies, not theoriginals.

Pictures can be aected by fngerprints and other
marks on the lens. Keep the lens clean.
Closing the cover does not completely cut power to
the camera.

turned on in playback mode by pressing theD
button or about a second.
I the lens cover is closed, pressing theD buttonduring playback will turn the camera o.
Tip: Switching to Shooting Mode
To exit to shooting mode, press the shutter button
halway. Press theD button to return to playback.
Tip: Auto Power Of
The camera will turn o automatically i no operations are perormed or the length o time selected in the
AUTO POWER OFF menu (see page 85). To turn the camera on, close and reopen the lens cover or press theD button or about a second.

A language-selection dialog is displayed the frst time the camera is turned on. Set up the camera as
described below (or inormation on resetting the clock or changing languages, see page 80).

Tip: The Camera Clock
I the battery is removed or an extended period, the
camera clock will be reset and the language-selection
dialog will be displayed when the camera is turned
on. I the battery is let in the camera or about ten
hours, the battery can be removed or about 24 hours
without resetting the clock, language selection, or
power management options.

This section describes how to take pictures in AUTO mode. AUTO mode is automatically selected the
frst time the camera is turned on; or inormation on restoring AUTO mode ater shooting in other
modes, see page 31.

Cautions
I no ace is detected when the shutter-release
button is pressed halway (pg. 91), the camera will
ocus on the subject at the center o the monitor
and red-eye will not be removed. I the camera
is unable to detect a ace, turn Intelligent Face
Detection o and use ocus lock (pg. 23).
I the subject moves as the shutter button is pressed,their ace may not be in the area indicated by the
green border when the picture is taken.
In each shooting mode, the camera will detect and
ocus on aces but exposure will be optimized or
the entire scene rather than the selected portrait

Autoocus
Although the camera boasts a high-precision autoocus system, it may be unable to ocus on the subjects
listed below. I the camera is unable to ocus using autoocus, use ocus lock (pg. 23) to ocus on another
subject at the same distance and then recompose the photograph. Very shiny subjects such as mirrors or car bodies.
Fast-moving subjects.
Subjects photographed through a window or other reective object.
Dark subjects and subjects that absorb rather than reect light, such as hair or ur.
Insubstantial subjects, such as smoke or ame.
Subjects that show little contrast with the background (or example, subjects in clothing that is the same
color as the background).
Subjects positioned in ront o or behind a high-contrast object that is also in the ocus rame (or example, a
subject photographed against a backdrop o highly contrasting elements).

When the ash is used, the cameras Intelligent Flash system instantly analyzes the scene based on
such actors as the brightness o the subject, its position in the rame, and its distance rom the
camera. Flash output and sensitivity are adjusted to ensure that the main subject is correctly exposed
while preserving the eects o ambient background lighting, even in dimly-lit indoor scenes. Use the
ash when lighting is poor, or example when shooting at night or indoors under low light.
To choose a ash mode, press the selector right (K). The ash modechanges each time the selector is pressed; in modes other than AUTO,
the current mode is indicated by an icon in the monitor. Choose rom
the ollowing options (some options are not available in all shooting modes; see the restrictions in
another supplied document):

Red-Eye Removal
WhenSON is selected or Intelligent FaceDetection (pg. 21), red-eye removal (S) is available
in AUTO (V), fll ash (U), and slow sync (Z)modes. Red-eye removal minimizes red-eye caused when light rom the ashis reected rom the subjects retinas asshown in the illustration at right.
" Silent Mode
In situations in which camera sounds or light rom
the ash may be unwelcome, press the DISP/BACK

The camera speaker, shooting indicator, ash, and

Use only memory cards that have been ormatted
in the camera and contain pictures taken with
the camera. I a memory card containing a large
number o images is inserted, there may be a delaybeore FinePixViewer starts and FinePixViewer may
be unable to import or save images. Use a memory
card reader to transer pictures.
Opening or closing the lens cover during transer
could result in loss o data or damage to internal
memory or the memory card.
Disconnect the camera beore inserting or removing
memory cards. In some cases, it may not be possible to access
pictures saved to a network server using
FinePixViewer in the same way as on a standalone
computer.
The user bears all applicable ees charged by the
phone company or Internet service provider when
using services that require an Internet connection.
Ater confrming that transerring has fnished, ollow
the on-screen instructions to disconnect the camera
and the computer. Close the battery-chamber cover
and turn o the camera.
Uninstalling FinePixViewer
Only uninstall FinePixViewer beore reinstalling
