When you do the Extend Search, one option you can choose is to search in Art Images. Selecting this will do your search automatically in some of the library-created tools designed to help you find related materials.

This tutorial will give you a very brief overview of what you are searching when you come to this page.

When you search the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, you will be searching one of the finest museums in the U.S.

Another great collection is the Getty in Los Angeles. It has major holdings in European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs.

It also has scanned many of these materials.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art needs no explanation. The extend search here will search other resources, such as separate collections and time-lines.

The next collection we have selected is the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It also has an advanced search and you can browse or search the site by each collection.

The Louvre in Paris also needs no description. The problem of searching it is that you must do it in French, and this includes place names. For example, searching “Ostia” retrieves nothing, but searching for “Ostie” retrieves several items.

The National Gallery in London houses one of the greatest collections of Western European painting from the 13th to the 19th centuries.

The National Gallery in Washington D.C. is also one of the great collections. Scans of many of their materials are also available.

The Courtauld Institute of Art houses a great collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, but it also has a major art photograph collection.

Corbis has a huge variety of images, primarily stock photos. It must open in a new window to function properly.

The famous collection at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia is also on the web. This is another site where you will find tours, online exhibitions and many other resources when you search.

LUNAcommons.org searches many collections at once and allows different methods of filtering your search.

The ArtCyclopedia also searches multiple sites, including some commercial ones.

There is no advanced search, and you must choose author, title or place.

VADS is an excellent site for art images from the UK. Images can be searched by keyword, and they are also available for browsing in different collections.
