The "visible web" is what you see in theresults pages from general web searchengines. It's also what you see in almost

Search Engine ImprovementsCertain kinds of pages used to be invisible but cannow be found in most search engine results:

Pages in non-HTML formats (pdf, Word, Excel, Corelsuite, etc.) are "translated" into HTML now in mostsearch engines and can "seen" in search results.

Script-based pages, whose links contain a “?” orother script coding, no longer cause most searchengines to exclude them.

Pages generated dynamically by other types ofdatabase software (e.g., Active Server Pages, Cold

Fusion) can be indexed if there is a stable URLsomewhere that search engine spiders can find.Once these were largely shunned by search engines.

Search engines stillcannot ty e or think...If access to a web pages requires typing, webcrawlers encounter a barrier they cannot gobeyond. They cannot search online catalogs andthey cannot enter a password or login.

The “Deep Web” thus is now largely that whichis hidden inside searchable databases

Thousands of public-record, official, & special-purpose databases containing government, financial, logistical, & other types of info that isneeded to answer very specific inquiries

Using the Search Enginesto Find “hidden” contentUse Google’s advanced search features to

specify specialized file type (e.g. powerpoint)and narrow your domain type (e.g. .edu)

• "workplace violence" site:.edu filetype:ppt

Use search engines to locate useful databases

by searching a subject term and the word

"database".

• toxic chemicals database

• plane crash database

So...What AreLearning

Objects?"The main idea of 'learningobjects' is to breakeducational content downinto small chunks that canbe reused in variouslearning environments, inthe spirit of object-

oriented programming"
