Finding Architecture Articles Using DatabasesURL: lib.utexas.edu

On the home page, tab over to Databases.

Database searching helps you find articles on specific topics, or areas of interest.

If you know the name of the database you need, the quickest way to get it is from the alphabetical list.

For the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, click on the A.

For subject specific databases, such as Architecture and Planning, it is helpful to browse databases by subject.

Click on the Architecture and Planning link to view databases

commonly used in the subject area.

Avery Index to Architecture Periodicals is a good starting point. To find out more about the different databases, click the About link, to the

right of the database title.

Refer to the sidebar for subject specific

information.

Make sure you are using “Advanced” search.

Enter your keywords in the search boxes.

Use AND to connect multiple concepts and OR if there are synonyms/multiple names for something, such as the building name in this example.

The first line is the full article title.

Underneath the title is the source information(aka, where you will find the article).

Click on the title to get more details.

Document feature outlines the materials found in the article.

Click Subject terms to find similar articles.

Click the Findit@UT button to find the article through the libraries.

If we have online access to the article, the Findit@UT button will take you strait to the electronic article.

If the Findit@UT button doesn’t direct you to an electronic article you can access with your EID and Password, then we do not have access to the online version.

Most of the time, we will have a physical copy of the item, even if we do not it online.

Check the catalog, under Here are additional options to try.

If we do not have the physical journal listed in the catalog, click the Request an Article or Chapter link to obtain it from another library.

There are two ways to search for the physical item in the catalog.

ISSN stands for International Standard Serial Number, and is used to identify a specific journal.

Title searches pull up all journals with that title, so it is less specific than ISSN.

If there is an ISSN listed, check the catalog this way first.

The library where the item is

physically housed.

The call number is like the address for the book in the library(write this down).

Journals are always either library use only or have a 2-hour check out period. You can make a scan at the library.

Keep in mind: the turnaround time is 2-4 days.

Often, it is faster to come to the library to find articles. At the Architecture and Planning Library, you will use the call number to find the journal or magazine.

The most current issues are in the reading room of the Architecture & Planning Library, in alphabetical order.

Call numbers are read left to right, in alphabetical and then numerical order (just make sure you read the numbers as whole numbers).
