Poulin offers a daily appetizer, salad, meat, fish and pasta spe-cial. He can easily accommodate those customers with specific dietary requirements.My friend Nina joined me for an early dinner last week and we spent so much time talking and enjoying the food that we sat for almost three hours. Both Haxhistasa and Poulin took time to explain specific dishes and their ingredients.

How wonderful that we benefitted from Poulin using his prior baking skills to prepare his light homemade bread. The small ac-companying tray included homemade white truffle honey butter, olive oil with basil pesto and olive oil with sundried tomatoes. From the Antipasti starters, Nina and I began by sharing a deli-cious $11 Torre di Caprese ( fresh tomatoes with sliced mozza-rella cheese). Other appetizer items include calamari, homemade meatballs with fontina cheese, large broccoli rabe with sausage and grilled octopus with diced potatoes and peppers. Prices range from $11-$18 (Antipasto Italiano for two).

Two popular pastas include seafood with either fettucine ($29) or risotto ($36), but less elaborate dishes are in the $20s. Haxhis-tasa boasted that the Gnocchi Dolce ($23) are "like little pillows." Fish platters feature branzino, salmon, mahi-mahi and lobster.

Not wanting too much, we ordered a side dish of the regular Rigatoni Bolognese ($22). Ordered as a side, the pasta is half-price plus $3. I liked the pasta, but Nina is a huge Bolognese fan and gave it high marks. She especially liked the chopped carrots in the sauce.

We split the Flounder Francaise, topped with lump crabmeat and asparagus, special and Vitello (veal) Saltimbocca ($25), made with prosciutto and white wine sauce. Both were delicious.

Sometimes you get so used to a neighborhood restaurant that you may not notice positive changes when new management comes along. Don't make that mistake at the new La Cucina Ris-torante in the Center Point Plaza in Northfield. The dining space has been home to multiple eateries over several years, but none have looked as lovely. Owner Elis Haxhistasa wants to transform his dining room into a more refined lunch and dinner destination.

Haxhistasa has a long hospitality history after leaving his native Albania. He studied economic management in college, concen-trating on front-of-the-house hospitality operations. After working 10 years in Italy, his family immigrated to the U.S. at Christmas 2006 and settled in Pennsylvania.

He worked at Penne Restaurant & Wine Bar at the Inn at Penn in Philadelphia's University City for years. There Haxhistasa met Chef Ron Poulin, whose talents are now on full display at La Cucina.

At 15, Poulin began his food career with 10 years of baking in a Mt. Laurel restaurant. His specialties included French pastries, croissant and quiche. Now in his mid-20s, Poulin wanted a new direction.

"I burned out and enrolled in the Restaurant School at the Walnut Hill College in Philadelphia, graduating in 2011," says Poulin.

Fortunately, Haxhistasa and Poulin met at Penne Restaurant & Wine Bar and became fast friends. While trained in classical French, Poulin also specialized in Italian there and soon worked his way up to sous chef.

By this past April, both were eager to leave to begin a new ven-ture together. The pair hired an agent to search out opportunities and learned that the former Roberta's site was available. They quickly jumped on the potential location.

Before their arrival, the walls were refreshed with pearl-white paint and elegant lighting was installed throughout. Also, chairs now have alligator white seat cushions and banquette bench seating lines the rear walls. La Cucina seats 60 inside and 40 outside on a lovely patio courtyard with umbrellas.

Haxhistasa and Poulin moved to Ventnor, despite their individual family commitments still in Philadelphia. Coincidentally, Haxhis-tasa is close friends with fellow Albanian Tony Hoda, the owner/chef at La Padella in Ventnor. The three now share the rent in Hoda's Ventnor house.

Haxhistasa is happily settling in and getting to know his custom-ers. Poulin has created a diverse menu, filled with salads made of fresh fruit and varied lettuces, plus dishes cooked with fresh seafood and homemade pastas.

7/22 - Boardwalk Hall - The Who: THE WHO have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964; they brought together four dif-ferent personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane. Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. Now into their 53rd year, the band is still going strong and winning rave reviews.

7/28 - Borgata - The Record Company: The Record Company is an American power trio rock band formed in Los Angeles. The members are Chris Vos (guitar, lead vocals), Alex Stiff (bass, back-ing vocals), and Mark Cazorla (drums, backing vocals). Their music is influenced by blues musicians like John Lee Hooker, early punk bands like The Stooges, and rock bands like The Rolling Stones. Their sound incorporates slide guitar, distorted bass, a Ludwig drum kit and the vocals of Chris Vos, who grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm. The three-man group started in late 2011, hanging up old microphones and recording live in the bass player’s living room in Los Feliz, California. The Record Company have since played concert halls across North America, opening for acts as diverse as John Mayer, B.B. King, Social Distortion, Buddy Guy, Grace Potter, and Trombone Shorty. The band toured Europe supporting Blackberry Smoke in late 2015. Their first full-length album Give It Back to You was released on Concord Records on February 12, 2016. Its lead single “Off the Ground” reached #1 on the US Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. The band has received critical acclaim from Entertainment Weekly, Paste, The Huffington Post, and Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone also included The Record Company in their April 2016 list of “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” Give It Back to You was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album in the 2017 Grammy Awards, losing to The Last Days of Oakland by Fantastic Negrito.

7/28 - Caesars - Anthony Hamilton: Anthony Hamilton will sing all of his hits live on Friday, July 28 in his Caesars Atlantic City show. The Grammy-Award winning soul artist has produced several hits including “The Point of it All” and “Comin’ From Where I’m From.” Hamilton got his start in music by singing in his church choir at age 10. Before his breakout as a solo artist, he worked with musicians including Donell Jones, Nappy Roots and D’Angelo.
