We welcomed Derbyshire visitors to our school on Wednesday with a full school powhiri and then our Kapa Siva performed for them to give them a taste of our mul-cultural talents that we have here at Titahi Bay Intermediate. Last Friday a group of 10 students aended Te Matani o Te Ao which was held over 4 days at the Westpac Stadium. Our students enjoyed their day with a mixture of watching the different groups per- form, walking around looking at the various stalls, enjoying the yummy kai that was for sale and espe- cially our mission to find the toffee apples. One highlight of the day was when our students visited the Defence Force and Police stalls. Our students were given a challenge to try to take the toy off the Police dog. Our 3 boys tried their best, but the Police dog won. Then a few of our girls tried to take the toy off the NZ drug and money detecng dog, there was a bit of a struggle but with the help of the Police officer the toy came loose. Tena Koutou, Talofa Lava, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Kia Orana, Taloha, Malo e lelei, Greetings to you all Welcome to Week 5, we are nearly half way through the term. Students are settling well into the routines of moving classes for their various subjects as per their timetable. Miss Lavea will be absent from school. We are fortu-nate enough to have Martin Brabander cover her classes. We welcomed Derbyshire visitors to our school on Wednesday with a full school powhiri and then our Kapa Siva performed for them to give them a taste of our multi-cultural talents that we have here at Titahi Bay Intermediate. Students enjoyed listening to where they were from and our manuhiri enjoyed their time in the classrooms. They were very im-pressed with what they saw happening in our class-rooms and the interest that our students showed in learning about where they came from in England. Last Friday a group of 10 students attended Te Matatini o Te Ao which was held over 4 days at the Westpac Stadium. Our students enjoyed their day with a mixture of watching the different groups per-form, walking around looking at the various stalls, enjoying the yummy kai that was for sale and espe-cially our mission to find the toffee apples. One highlight of the day was when our students visited the Defence Force and Police stalls. Our students were given a challenge to try to take the toy off the Police dog. Our 3 boys tried their best, but the Police dog won. Then a few of our girls tried to take the toy off the NZ drug and money detecting dog, there was a bit of a struggle but with the help of the Police officer the toy came loose. I would like to thank the parents who offered to help to transport our group to and from the railway station. A great day was had by all students. Congratulations to the following students: Claude Haring, Tegan Orpin-Price, Kisana Wright, Kotilia Iofi,

Cherish Ammunson, Mahe Carter, Austin Arnold, Se-renity Bishop, Emelia Wright, Jimi McMahon, Te Ara Samuel, Leo Mitchell, Tian Steel, Anakin Aroun-saphay, Ana Pauu, Chris Spencer, Percy Lindsay and Italy Makaua for having a great start to the year.

Futsal Last week we entered 3 girl’s teams into the Futsal tournament being held at Te Rauparaha Arena. All students who were involved in this tournament en-joyed themselves. There were a total of 5 Year 7 and 8 teams, however 3 of them were ours and the other 2 were from Postgate. So our teams played each other and had a lot of fun. Thanks to Amy Cole for organising this event as well as Natasha Clark for helping to supervise the teams.

WAITECH – Waka Ama We had a large number of students put their name down for this wonderful 10 week programme. We can only send 10 students at a time so the remaining students will be put onto a waiting list. It has been great to see the commitment from these students as they have been prepared with their gear for two weeks in a row.

Production: A big thank you to James Mitchell who put a video together for the school of last year’s production per-formance ‘The Circus’.

Technology We have made some changes to our focus for the delivery of our Technology programme. Many will remember it as Technicraft or Manual - if you are similar vintage to myself. The current NZ Curriculum has technology with a large focus on the design pro-cess. This means it is about our students identifying a need along with a stakeholder for their product. A majority of the time is spent on design and proto-types and not necessarily the finished product. This year we are going to focus on the end product with the design process ensuring the end product is suita-ble for their stakeholder. In sewing this term our students are creating a fleece blanket that can be converted into a pocket pillow and pulled out when you need a blanket. The skills students will develop are learning to blanket stitch, cut fabric and ensuring that their product is fit for purpose for their identified stakeholder.

Visual Arts While half of the class is at Technology the other half are in Visual Art. I am fortunate enough to be able to teach Room 7 for Art and their pieces of work are looking great. The focus for Visual Arts this term is portraits/images that have a story that they can con-nect to.

Students have identified an image of something that relates to them, either culturally or personally. They then use pastels and dye to re-create their image using techniques of blending and layering of pastels as well as chalk pencils. It will be great to see these pieces of work completed and displayed around the school for others to enjoy.

Attendance Regular attendance at school is the key to success for all students. It has been great to hear parents/caregivers are ringing or emailing the school when their child is absent. Natasha is our attendance point of contact in the office. She manages the Student Management System as well as activating the Text

message system if we have not heard from parents/caregivers when a student is away.

Our procedures at Titahi Bay Intermediate are as fol-lows: Parent/Caregiver to contact the school if your

child is away. Please inform us of the reason for their absence as we have to code it on the Student Management System.

If your child is away sick for 3 consecutive days, then we may request a doctors certificate.

Home Room teachers will contact home if attendance is irregular to see what support may be needed.

School Nurse We are fortunate enough to have the services of a School Health Nurse who visits once a week. Our nurse over the many years has been Lucy Robinson but she is now leaving us to take on an adventure in Australia, leading school nursing over there. I would like to thank Lucy for the great work that she has done during her time here with us supporting stu-dents and whanau with various health concerns. I would like to wish her all the very best.

We have not been notified of her replacement, so I will let you all know when this happens.

Student Achievement Function Last week our Student Achievement Function (SAF) team met. We have identified our area of focus which is ‘Educationally Powerful Connections with Parents, Families and Whānau’. As this plan is devel-oped I will be able to share more with you. So watch this space.

I.C.A.S Exams The I.C.A.S tests are changing how they do their testing. The ICAS is reimagined for 2019 with the difference being: A 1-day sitting window Available online only Emphasis on challenge and extension Provides additional challenge for able

students Tight time restrictions – high stakes assess-

ment All participants receive a hard copy certificate

This testing is available for whanau who would like their child to experience sitting an exam but this is your choice. We are happy to administer the test, but I would like to inform you that as a school, we do not use the information that they provide – this is solely for experience and parents desire. All tests are $15.00 plus g.s.t and the subjects are: Digital Technologies, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee, English and Mathematics. More information will come out in term two as the sitting dates will be held in August and September.

Strategic Logo

You may have seen our new strategic logo appearing on various communication. This was created to visu-ally present our three strategic goals as well as incor-porating the original school logo of our heron which is standing upright.

Our three strategic goals are:

1.) Accelerated Student Progress - represented by the poutama. The poutama symbolises the stepping up and continual progress in achievement, this is for everyone students, staff, whanau and the communi-ty.

2.) Whanau Engaged in Student Learning - represent-ed by a whare. The Whare (house) represents where learning starts - in the home and our T.B.I whare of learning being a part of bringing that all together,

with all of us working together. 3.) Thinking Locally, Succeeding Globally - represent-ed by a koru. This represents the start of a new jour-ney in our students lives (the middle years) along with embracing their continued growth in a forever changing world.
