The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

Welcome to our opponents Liversedge who have travelled here today from West Yorkshire. Liversedge have had a tough season so far and currently find themselves at the foot of the NCEL Premier. After a solid 2-2 draw against Parkgate last weekend, they will be looking to kick-on and get one over on the league leaders. We will be approaching this game in the same way that we approach every other game – with great determination and a will to win.

It’s now two-and-a-half months since we last played a home game at the i2i Stadium, so it’s fantastic to finally be back on the Ings Lane turf, which isn’t looking too bad – all things considered! A big thank you to everyone involved in the recent clear up after the Christmas floods. We’ve said it before, but we continue to be astounded by everyone’s kindness and generosity. Unfortunately the clubhouse has very limited functionality at the moment and we are still waiting to hear from our insurance company as to how we proceed from here.

Everyone at Tadcaster Albion was deeply saddened by the death of our extremely popular barmaid Sonny Lang earlier this week. Sonny was a friend to many of us and a passionate Brewers fan, who despite her many health problems, always had a smile on her face. We will miss her dearly and will be holding a minute’s applause before the game. We will also be referring to the bridge as Sonny’s Bridge and urge members of the community to join with us by marking her memory in this way.

Sonny’s Bridge had its official opening yesterday, which was perfect timing for today’s game. We have to admit it’s looking fantastic and we hope it helps to restore some sense of normality to the town. We’d like to personally thank the Corporate Director of Business and Environmental Services David Bowe at North Yorkshire

County Council and MP Nigel Adams for the speed in which they have worked to organise the new footbridge. It will make a massive difference to local people who have struggled to access GP surgeries and shops on the opposite side of the river.

We were delighted with last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Bridlington Town. Last minute winners from Josh Greening are becoming quite the norm. Perhaps Josh could however consider scoring a little earlier in future though to save us all from developing heart conditions! Thanks to everyone who travelled to Bridlington in fancy dress. We caused quite a stir on social media. It was a fantastic day out and the three points topped it off nicely.

We travel to 11th placed Rainworth Miners Welfare on Saturday, which promises to be another excellent game. Rainworth joined the NCEL Premier after being relegated from the EvoStik Division One South. The club underwent some major changes prior to the start of the season, but they have settled well into life in the NCEL Premier. Please keep an eye on our website and social media for travel information. It’s unlikely that we’ll be running a coach, but there are sure to be car-sharing opportunities.

We’ve been drawn away to Grimsby Borough in the League Cup on Tuesday 22nd March 2016. The winners will progress into the Quarter Finals.

We hope you enjoy this afternoon’s game. Let’s hope we can make it five league wins on the bounce. The i2i Sports DirectorsMatt Gore, James Gore & Kent Mayall

TAFC Manager’s Notes

In what should have been a really special week for the club returning to the i2i we were all devastated by the news of our much loved Sonny. Having only been at the club this season I think I certainly have been touched by Sonny’s unbelievable attitude to life in general despite her illness. On behalf of all the staff and players our thoughts at this time are with Anna and Marc.

It’s been a great start to the New Year for the lads, the hard work in a difficult period is beginning to pay off. The result last week at Bridlington was very pleasing. Difficult conditions, stubborn opposition and a difficult playing surface meant we were unable to maintain any rhythm. But with a determination we were able to create the one really big chance of the game and after a fantastic ball from Jason, Josh was appropriately placed to apply the finish. Never have I witnessed so many super heroes celebrating together, a brilliant effort from the fans who had made the journey.

It puts us in a great position, but we will not allow ourselves to get carried away. I believe there are four or five teams capable of putting a 15 game winning run together. That means we can not

afford to get carried away, and more importantly start believing in our own hype. The lads know we have to work hard every time we play, complacency will only ever result in one outcome, defeat!

On the injury front Connor has recovered from a slight hamstring problem, Heathy and Clayts are on the road to recovery and may feature in today’s game if we need them. Otherwise they are likely to be rested. The remainder are fighting fit, consistency now being a key factor. We have picked the same 16 now for the last five games. We also shouldn’t forget that Thomo and George remain part of the current plans, both getting much needed game time at Garforth and Selby.

Finally I must return to the news that has dominated the club this week. Sonny was a very spirited, inspirational young lady whose life was cut short. Her smile will be missed by us all, thank you for the memories, god bless!

In loving memory of Sonny.

Yours in Sport, Billy #tadallover

12

LIVERSEDGE FC was founded in 1910 following the demise of the old Liversedge Rugby Club which had been a member of the Northern Union which, in turn, was the forerunner to the Rugby League. It was one of a number of clubs which switched codes around that time.

The club was a founder member of the West Riding County Amateur League in season 1922-23 and went on to be the most successful club in the league’s infancy, taking the league title three times in the first five seasons.

The long association with the County Amateur League was maintained until the early 1970s by which time the club had kept up their position as a top local side.

The decision was taken to apply for membership of the Yorkshire League and the club’s acceptance for season 1972-73 was followed by immediate promotion from Division Three.

While not winning trophies around this time, success did come the club’s way as promotion to Yorkshire League Division One was achieved prior to the amalgamation of the Midland and Yorkshire League to form the Northern Counties East League in 1982.

The early years in the new set-up saw ‘Sedge struggle both on and off the pitch but good strides were made in the late 1980s.

In 1988-89, they were promoted to NCEL Division One but a lack of floodlights the following season saw them miss out on promotion to the Premier Division.

A great club effort the following season by players, officials and supporters alike saw them promoted to the Premier Division. The disappointment of missing out the previous season had been tempered by the winning of the West Riding County Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Life in the top flight has brought fluctuating fortunes and relegation has been flirted with on a couple of occasions but Sedge is still proud of their record of never ever being relegated.

Recent seasons have brought league stability and the club’s placing of 6th in 1999-2000 was emulated two seasons ago as the club maintained it’s improvement under Manager Eugene Lacy.

The high spot of 2004-2005 however, was undoubtedly a fine FA Cup run to the Fourth Qualifying Round, beating three higher-ranked opponents along the way.

The 2005-06 season saw a new look to ‘Sedge’s ground, as the famous “Clayborn Slope” was removed. The club’s epic FA Cup run had enabled the club to finance, with the help of the FA, the leveling of the playing area, a fitting reminder of their FA Cup exploits. On the field also brought success, by way of the winning of the NCEL League Cup for the first time and Sedge’s highest ever placing of runners-up spot in the NCEL Premier Division behind Buxton. Unfortunately promotion was not to be gained, as the club’s changing rooms were not to the satisfactory sizes needed by the Unibond.

The players and Management, as well as the committee were devastated and at the start of the

2006-07 season, spirits were low at the club but the merger of Sedge and a large local junior club, Gomersal & Cleckheaton FC. Was a step in the right direction. This match was made in heaven as Sedge significantly increased their membership almost overnight and Gomersal & Cleckheaton were provided with a home at last.

This meeting of two similar thinking and ambitious clubs promised well. On the pitch though an indifferent start to the season however led to the resignation of Eugene Lacy in December and at the start of 2007, the club appointed Gerry Quinn, the former Emley, Ossett Albion, Altrincham and Ashton United Manager as their new boss. This proved to be a short-lived encounter with Quinn struggling to make the most of an NCEL playing expense budget.

So in June 2007, Steve Newton, was invited to spearhead the club’s ambition to join the Unibond League and with the new committee, strengthened by our junior club colleagues, now putting together plans ,we look forward to the coming season.

Head-2-Head Liversedge AFC By Ian Tyssen

We’re all aware of football matches being described as ‘a game of two halves’. Well, the encounters between the Brewers and Liversedge in the last 32 years could certainly be titled ‘a history of two halves’.

In the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) era, the two clubs first met in NCEL Division One North in the 1984/85 season. The Cleckheaton club won both fixtures in that season - 2-0 at Tadcaster and 1-0 at home.

Albion went on to lose five out of six NCEL Division Two meetings between the clubs from 1986 to 1989 - scoring two and conceding 12 goals. The final game finished in a 0-0 draw.

As Sedge gained promotion, the clubs had to wait 21 years until they met again in league football, when the Brewers

also won promotion to the NCEL Premier Division.

The last five seasons brought eight victories for Albion and two draws in ten league meetings. In the final game of the 2013/14 season, Carl Stewart scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 triumph at Clayborn.

Last season saw a Tadcaster Albion league double, which started with a 3-0 win at the i2i Stadium - Josh Greening, George Bissett and Calum Ward scoring in front of 296 fans. This was followed by a 7-0 mauling in the away game, when Carl Stewart 2, Calum Ward 2, Jonathan Greening, Josh Barrett and David Brown were among the goals.

Earlier this season, the Brewers picked up a comfortable 4-0 away win against a 10 man Liversedge team, with goals from Jimmy Beadle, Daniel Clayton,

George Conway and Adam Baker.

The overall NCEL league record between the club has the Brewers with nine wins, Sedge claiming seven victories and the other three meetings being draws. The Brewers have scored 34 and conceded 20 goals.

There have also been three West Riding County Cup ties between the clubs in the same period of time. Liversedge won the first round ties in 1984/85 (4-1) and 1996/97 (3-1) - both at home. Last season, Albion came back from being 0-1 down after five minutes to win 3-1, with goals from George Bissett (73 minutes), Andy Milne (83) and Calum Ward (90). The second round tie was watched by a crowd of 149 at the i2i Stadium.

TAFC Match Preview

Tadcaster Albion v Liversedge13th February 2016.

Today we welcome the fans, players and officials of Liversedge to the i2i stadium. Liversedge are having a tough season and currently lie bottom of the NCEL Premier league with just 16 points from 22 games played. Away from home in the league, they have not won a game and drawn 4 of their 12 games played. It should be noted that they have a lot of games in hand on the teams around them, so all is not lost for them yet. Their leading goalscorer is Andrew Wood with 7 goals in all competitions, but he joined Thackley back in October. In the game at Liversedge back in Septem-ber, The Brewers won 4-0 with goals from Jimmy Bea-dle, Dan Clayton, George Conway and Adam Baker.

On Wednesday evening, Worksop Town had a 4-3 home win against Retford United after being 3-1 down at half time. This means The Brewers are now 2 points behind Worksop Town but with 3 games in hand. Elsewhere in the NCEL Premier today, Worksop Town play away at Brigg Town, Cleethorpes Town are at Garforth Town , Bridlington Town are at Armthorpe Welfare whilst Handsworth Parramore are at home to Maltby Main. The Brewers have won their last 4 league games and The Sedge have played very little in the last few months without any wins, so I will go for a 2-0 home win to keep the title challenge firmly on track.

WIN £50 - Competition

A mystery Brewers fan has offered to pay £50 to one lucky supporter who correctly guesses the identity of this little boy.

The youngster is wearing a hand-knitted Tadcaster Albion kit, which was knitted by his mother, so that his brother could be a mascot for the Brewers in 1956.

It was then passed down to this cheeky chappie who still sup-ports the Brewers to this day, 60 years on. Unfortunately he no longer wears knitted Albion kits to the matches though!

All correct entrants will be put into a hat and drawn after today’s game.

The mystery fan has also pledged to donate £50 to Tadcaster Albion’s Flood Relief Fund. If no-one guesses his identity, he will instead donate the full £100 to the fund.

To enter the competition, please give Matt or Jimmy your answer during the game today.

NCEL 2015-16 Worksop FC v TAFC

Taddy Make It A Hat-Trick of Wins Over Rivals Worksop Town Tadcaster Albion comfortably dismantled title rivals Worksop Town for the third time this season in horrible conditions.

It was honours even at the break as highly sought after midfielder Tom Elliott cancelled out Adam Baker’s early strike. The Brewers were solid at the back and patient throughout the afternoon and Jimmy Beadle’s precise volley saw them take the lead before a brace from Josh Greening wrapped up the three points as the title race really begins to hot up.

Taddy boss Billy Miller made just the one change from Tuesday night’s league cup win against Parkgate as Jason Mycoe came back in for Conor Sellars as expected after the gritty midfielder took a kick in the face at Brigg.

For those of you that missed the news, the match was taking place at Selby Town’s ground due to floodlight problems at the i2i Stadium. The Brewers and The Tigers have both faced each other twice already this season at Sandy Lane and at the i2i Stadium in the FA Vase and this third encounter was intriguingly being held at a ‘Neutral Venue’.

In terms of playing conditions at Selby, it was absolutely horrendous as constant snow storms fell at the Plant Fairfax Stadium making it well and truly freezing.

However, the game was kicked off in blue sky sunshine as the pre-match blizzard soon passed. It was Worksop who had the first shot at goal as Steven Woolley spun around three yellow shirts and struck narrowly wide of the mark.

Taddy went straight up the other end and gave The Tigers’ back four their first attack to defend as Julian Lawrance, who got sent off in the first meeting between the two sides nervously spooned over a Jimmy Beadle cross.

The first big chance of the match fell to James Cottingham of Worksop as Woolley played a neat one-touch ball in behind for Cottingham who had a clear view of the goal but his shot was wild and off target.

Selby Town’s pitch didn’t look too bad on first inspection but following the pre-match snow and rain, this soon changed as squelches were aplenty from the off as it started to cut up. Putting the pitch aside, the first goal was scored after 11 minutes as The Brewers took an early lead. Josh Greening carried the ball into the final third and played a lovely weighted ball in behind to Adam Baker who had pulled off his man and

the former Bradford City man found the back of the net with a side-footed finish. Worksop goalkeeper Jon Kennedy won’t be happy to watch the goal back however as Baker’s effort was tame and right at him.

Adam Baker’s 11th minute goal was his 15th of the season in all competitions and he had a super chance to make it number 16 and number 2 for Taddy shortly after. Jonathan Greening’s corner was contested by Beadle which dropped kindly for Baker on the volley who smashed inches the wrong side of the post.

Gary Stevens in the Tadcaster goal had his first save to make with 20 minutes gone as Matthew Booth managed to squeeze a shot on target but the former Highworth Town stopper got down well to his left hand side.

However Worksop were back in it two minutes later as recent Sheffield Wednesday trialist Tom Elliott equalised for The Tigers. Tad scored a brilliant counter-attacking goal on Tuesday night at Parkgate and Worksop did something similar to them to draw level. Josh Greening’s corner was cleared at the near post as Steve Woolley picked up the pieces, spun off Jason Mycoe and chipped in behind Taddy’s defence as new signing Alex Nightingale nipped in before Anderson and tried to play it out wide to Elliott but his first attempt was blocked by Dan Clayton. The attempted pass took a couple of fortunate ricochets and fell back to Nightingale whose pass this time made it to Elliott who stroked it under the advancing Stevens.

Taddy looked to reply immediately and the Josh Greening to Adam Baker combination nearly worked again, in identical fashion to the goal as Greening played a brilliantly weighted ball in behind to the speedy Baker but Phil Roe just did enough to toe the ball out for a corner. The set-piece was originally cleared by The Tigers but Liam Ormsby swept it back out to the corner taker Greening who knocked it past Roe and dashed around the other side of the defender before pulling back to Beadle whose scrambled close range shot was hooked out of the danger area.

With half-time approaching it was the elder Greening who tried his luck next for The Brewers as the treble winner hit a firm and low shot to which Kennedy managed to keep hold of, just.

Half-Time: Worksop 1-1 Tadcaster Albion

The second half started with a bunch of half chances for both sides, oh and some more snow. Jimmy Beadle went close for Tadcaster and Julian Lawrence headed just over for Worksop as all 392 fans in attendance sensed that the next goal in the match was a big one.

Speaking of the next goal, it came in the 62nd minute and it was Tadcaster Albion that retook the lead.

Adam Baker was having an outstanding game on the right hand

side and was giving Phil Roe a torrid time. Once again Baker had the pace and power to glide down the wing, pick his head up and cleverly pull it back to the captain Jimmy Beadle who executed a low volley absolutely perfectly as he guided it into the bottom corner. Cue pandemonium as Beadle and co join the Taddy fans in the main stand behind the goal.

There was still time for the visitors to get back into the match plus they were still seeing plenty of the ball but Taddy’s game plan seemed to be working to a tee as they sat and defended terrifically as a unit and this frustrated Worksop when probing.

With that being said they had a golden chance to level the match for a second time as Booth laid it off to James Cottingham in an inside left position and drove low but Gary Stevens came up with a superb save to keep the score line at 2-1.

The save proved to be an even more important one as just a minute later The Brewers extended their lead.

As well as Baker, Jordan Armstrong was having an impressive afternoon linking up with Baker time and time again and they did just that for the third goal. Baker shifted to Armstrong, Baker turned on the turbo to get beyond Roe and Armstrong brilliantly chipped over the defender to pick out Baker’s run.

Baker drove to the by-line and pulled a cross back looking for Josh Greening in which Cottingham and Lawrance Gorman dived in to try and clear but ended up missing the ball and colliding with each other allowing Josh Greening to fire into the back of the net.

Worksop rallied but their efforts seem to fade in the final 10 minutes on the heavy Selby pitch as everything was pointing to a Tadcaster win. The Brewers put the icing on the cake in the last minute by scoring a fourth. Liam Ormsby sent Josh Greening clean through on goal as Jon Kennedy started to charge out of his goal but then halted in his tracks and Greening superbly curled a low shot from distance which slowly rolled into the back of the net to send the TSC into ecstasy.

Full-Time: Worksop 1-4 Tadcaster Albion

The full-time whistle then went shortly after which sealed a massive three points for Tadcaster Albion. The result made it 3-0 over Worksop Town in matches this season with an impressive total aggregate score of 10-3. The Brewers are now five points off Worksop Town at the top of the NCEL Premier Division with four games in hand.

TEAM: Stevens, Armstrong, Clayton, Heath, Anderson, Ormsby, Baker (Sellars 87), Mycoe, Beadle © (Black 81), Josh Greening, Jonathan Greening.Unused Subs: Milne, Stewart and Barrett.

By Jay TaylorNCEL 2015-16 Pontefract Collieries FC v TAFC

Taddy Leave It Late In Pontefract Adam Baker’s 88th minute strike saw Tadcaster scrape past a tough and stubborn Pontefract Colls side in what could be a crucial three points.

Manager Billy Miller made one change to the side that beat Worksop Town 4-1 with Nick Black brought in to the starting eleven and Liam Ormsby dropping to the substitutes bench.

After Saturday’s huge 4-1 win over Worksop Town on Saturday, Tadcaster Albion had to make sure not to let any complacency slip into their game with a tricky midweek trip to Pontefract Collieries.

With that being said, it was almost the worst possible start for The Brewers who started sluggishly and if it wasn’t for a brilliant save by Gary Stevens, Colls would have taken the lead in the very first minute. The home side got off to a fiery start as forward Brad Kerr struck a sweet volley goal wards from inside the box but Gary Stevens got the faintest of touches to tip it onto the underside of the crossbar and away to safety. This was an early warning sign and a let off for Taddy who needed to wake up quickly as Colls looked to take the game to The Brewers.

Leaders such as Gregg Anderson and Jimmy Beadle looked to rally their troops after a shaky start, but they had their first sighting of goal just four minutes later. Jordan Armstrong clipped in behind to the pacey Adam Baker who drove and delivered to the unmarked Jimmy Beadle but the captain’s header flew comfortably over the mark.

Beadle’s chance was most definitely a half chance, but Taddy had a brilliant chance to take the lead three minutes later. Dan Clayton played a lovely positioned pass in behind to Nick Black who found himself one v one with the goalkeeper in an inside left position, managed to set himself, get the ball under control, look up but then opted not to shoot but to shift the ball square to Josh Greening whose right-footed strike was blocked by Jimmy Beadle of all people.

After the early scare for The Brewers, they started to wake up and get a hold of the game and compete as you have to earn the right to win football matches, where have I heard that before.

Tad were having their best spell of the match so far now and Jimmy Beadle scuppered another decent chance in the 13th minute. Adam Baker’s corner was thrashed back in by Jonathan Greening which dropped to Beadle who controlled,

turned and shot but Colls keeper Liam Corbett got down well to his right to stop.

Pontefract were making it extremely difficult for The Brewers to play their fast flowing football but they really should have opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Jonathan Greening turned Aaron Joseph inside and out and inside and out again before crossing low to Nick Black who controlled and struck powerfully on the volley from six yards out which was cleared off the line by Sykes. The ricochet popped up in the air to which Jimmy Beadle headed on target but again Sykes somehow got in the way of the destined goal. From the second goal line block, Beadle missed his kick but had a second bite at the cherry but again it was blocked and the danger was cleared.

It was an even game in terms of possession but apart from the crossbar being rattled in the first minute, it was Taddy who were creating all of the chances as a blue shirt nearly gave The Brewers the lead with Josh Greening’s pull back deflecting off Josh Wright and rolling inches past the upright.

Liam Corbett in the Pontefract goal was slowly starting to frustrate Tad as his saves tally was totting up. This time it was Adam Baker who tested the stopper with a fierce strike from 22 yards but Corbett flew to his left and tipped the rasping shot over the crossbar.

With nearly half an hour gone, Colls were still looking dangerous when driving at The Brewers’ defence and incidentally smashed the woodwork for a second time in the first half. The ball rolled kindly to Steve Palfrey on the edge of the penalty area and the striker did tremendously to strike as sweetly as he did on a 90 degree angle which thundered off the left-hand post leaving Stevens stranded.

Taddy kept plugging away at the experienced Ponte defence but with no joy as Josh Greening’s looping volley was tipped over followed by Nick Black’s curling effort which flew over from range.

With eight minutes to go until half-time, The Brewers carved out their best chance of the match as Josh Greening flicked the ball sideways to Adam Baker whose brilliant touch and ferocious pace allowed him to get beyond Aaron Joseph leaving him one on one with Corbett but again the keeper rushed off his line and thwarted the attacker’s effort with his feet.

The match could have certainly been described as an old school football match, it wasn’t a night for pretty football as conditions and circumstances wouldn’t allow it and with the physicality of the contest, both sides were forced into substitutions after injuries were picked up. Colls substitute Kingsley Wetherald was the man who put in a naughty looking tackle on Matt Heath leaving the experienced defender in a heap in serious pain. Heath was helped off and replaced by Andy Milne, a yellow card was shown to Wetherald, and many in the ground including home fans stated he was lucky to remain on the field after the challenge from behind.

Heath’s replacement Milne was straight into the battlefield and joining Heath and several others in the wars after receiving a nasty kick in the face by that man Weatherald again..

Half-Time: Pontefract Collieries 0-0 Tadcaster Albion

The second half started with no signs of relenting as the tackles kept flying in and tensions began to build.

If you had to give a subject line to sum up both halves; the

first half would have been chances and the second half would have been feisty. The chances well and truly dried up in the second 45 with things starting to boil over.

Colls were resorting to long range speculative efforts and they nearly broke the deadlock with just that. Gary Stevens had to be on his toes as Kingsley Wetherald’s fizzing 30 yard strike was superbly tipped over by the Tadcaster number one.

As time rapidly ticked away, Ponte began to sit deeper and soak up the pressure inviting Taddy onto them. This allowed The Brewers to get on top of the home side who were starting to slow things down and think of the draw.

Jonathan Greening and Jason Mycoe were working incredibly hard in the centre of midfield breaking play up and flying into tackles, Mycoe was everywhere and Greening was using his experienced head to keep things simple.

In the 64th minute, The Brewers were appealing for a penalty kick, well the fans behind the goal were as Adam Baker went down after a tangling of legs with Paul Sykes and the referee pointed to the spot, for a goal kick only though.

There was still over twenty minutes left for Taddy to find the back of the net however it was starting to feel like it was going to be just one of those nights as Pontefract were defending heroically as a unit.

Andy Milne was putting his head in where it hurts once again as Jonathan Greening’s free-kick dropped to Milne who controlled with his knee and threw himself towards the ball but Liam Corbett punched away and the defender was adjudged to have fouled the goalkeeper.

Into the final ten minutes and Liam Corbett was the man at the heart of it all once again as he somehow kept The Brewers at bay with an outstanding double save leaving all yellow shirts and Taddy fans bewildered. The visitors played some lovely one touch build-up play which ended up spiralling to Jonathan Greening inside Colls’ box whose low shot was stopped and Adam Baker’s follow up was also brilliantly saved. The danger for Pontefract wasn’t done there as the second save fell back to Baker who smashed into the side netting from close range.

After the amazing double save, it did seem like it wasn’t Taddy’s night and it was going to finish honours even but in the 88th minute The Brewers broke the deadlock, and nearly broke the net in doing so.

Adam Baker was tripped over by full-back Semir Ahmed on the left-hand touchline to give Taddy the opportunity to deliver into the danger area. Jonathan Greening stood over the free-kick and whipped in a cross right on the goalkeeper which was headed out but only to Adam Baker who absolutely leathered the shot on the half volley from eight yards out through a crowd of bodies and into the back of the net.

This was a big goal for Tadcaster, its games like these that could potentially be a banana skin, it may not have been pretty, it may have been ugly but the three points is the most important stat.

By Jay TaylorNCEL 2015-16 Bridlington Town FC v TAFC

Batman? Robin? No, Josh Greening was the real hero of the day! Tadcaster Albion left it late for the second time this week, this time even later as a Josh Greening header in the 95th minute saw The Brewers steal the three points on an uneventful afternoon at Queensgate which saw Taddy return to the top of the league.

Manager Billy Miller made two changes to the midweek win over Pontefract Collieries, both enforced as Matt Heath and Dan Clayton both picked up knocks. Andy Milne and Liam Ormsby were the men to come into the side, Ormsby, a central midfielder by trade had to fill in for Clayton at left-back.

It was Taddy’s annual fancy dress day and there were some humorous sights by the sea in Bridlington. This included; Batman & Robin, Super Mario and many men quite simply dressed as women, I was told they were supposed to be the spice girls.

It’s fair to say that Bridlington did superbly to get the game on in the first place after the torrential rain and as a result this was the only game in the NCEL Premier Division to go ahead.

The travelling Taddy fans were in outstanding voice as The Brewers got the match underway and they could have been cheering a goal in just the second minute. Adam Baker picked out Nick Black’s intelligent run in behind Brid’s defence but the striker was pushed wide and his effort at goal was deflected wide by the sliding Danny Brunton.

It was certainly Tadcaster that started the brighter of the two teams and came within a matter of inches to taking the lead in the 10th minute. Jimmy Beadle started the attack before setting Adam Baker down the right who drove at the defence and played it back inside to the onrushing Beadle who slid and shot a whisker wide of the left-hand upright.

The Brewers were still pushing to take the lead as the home side struggled to get a hold of the ball in the early stages and if Adam Baker’s whipped cross was pulled back an inch more, Beadle was on hand to surely head home.

The Seasiders’ first real attack came down the left-hand side after 16 minutes as Brunton bombed down the wing

and delivered in a low cross to which Gary Stevens had to grasp well and did.

There wasn’t an abundance of chances in the first half but Bridlington full-back Benn Lewis had to be alert as a Taddy corner was flicked on at the near post and if it wasn’t for Lewis, defender Andy Milne may well have fired into the back of the net. The closest the home side came in the first half was Eddie Birch volleying over and into the car park from 30 yards out.

To be honest, the most action in the first half was seen in the stand with the Taddy fans in. Half-way through the first 45, a big speaker was broken out by the travelling fans and started blasting out a variety of songs such as Tad All Over, We All Love Tad and Take Me Home and the noise was absolutely incredible. With not a lot happening on the pitch, the fancy dress singing Taddy fans were more entertaining as the wind and the cut up pitch made it difficult for the players.

Half-Time: Bridlington Town 0-0 Tadcaster Albion

In contrast to the first half, the second half started with the home side in the ascendency as they looked to take the game to The Brewers.

Set-pieces were looking like the best chance for either side to score on a difficult afternoon and Bridlington came close five minutes into the second half as Eddy Birch curled a free-kick narrowly over from 25 yards.

As the minutes started to pass, the pitch began to cut up more and more making it increasingly difficult for the two sides who both like to get the ball down and play.

Chances were few and far between to say the least but the home side carved out a decent chance ten minutes into the half.

Bridlington hit Taddy on the counter attack as captain Tom Fleming did well to get in behind Gregg Anderson and pull back to the unmarked Joel Sutton whose strike was met by Andy Milne. Milne was having an outstanding in the heart of defence alongside Anderson, terrifically timed tackles time and time again from the former Scarborough man.

With 65 minutes gone there were still no clear cut chances for either side as Benn Lewis blazed over the mark from 32 yards out.

Taddy were also finding it extremely difficult to cre-

ate any real opportunities but Adam Baker had a sight of goal shortly after as the wide man was released into some space and went for the lob over goalkeeper James Hitchcock but unfortunately didn’t get enough on the effort.

With fifteen minutes to go, it seemed like the match was destined to finish 0-0 as still no chances were being made for either side as moments later Jonathan Greening volleyed comfortably over with his weaker left-foot and Jimmy Beadle barged a header off target also.

There was the first shot on target for the home side in the 86th minute as Eddy Birch struck comfortably down Gary Stevens’ throat.

Into the last five minutes and the lethal pair of Josh Greening and Jimmy Beadle nearly broke the deadlock for The Brewers. Greening cleverly scooped in behind Brid’s defence to Beadle who went for the lob to which goalkeeper Hitchcock stood still and hoped and in the end he got away with it as the effort dropped narrowly over the crossbar.

As ‘Tad All Over’ was sang for the final time, a smoke bomb was then let off from the Taddy fans and what timing as in the 95th minute out of nowhere Tadcaster found the back of the net and won the match with the last kick of the game to send the comically dressed Tadcaster fans into absolute pandemonium.

Midfield maestro Jason Mycoe who was absolutely everywhere once again today and worked terrifically in tandem with Jonathan Greening picked up the ball 30 yards out in an inside right position, looked up and fired the perfect cross into Josh Greening who guided his header into the back of the net. Seeing Batman, Robin, Super Mario and the cross-dressers all going absolutely bonkers was a sight to behold (Check out our social media for the video).

Looking at the game as a whole a draw would have been a fair result on reflection as no side deserved to win the game but all it takes is that one bit of quality to unlock the door and in the end that’s what happened..

For the 2009/10 season, the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) reduced in size from 39 to 38 clubs. The Premier Division continued to have 20 members and Division One dropped to 18 teams.

At the end of the previous season, Mickleover Sports were promoted from the Premier Division to the Northern Premier League (NPL) Division One South. Eccleshill United were relegated from the Premier Division to Division One, with Scarborough Athletic and Rainworth Miners Welfare moving in the opposite direction. There were no new clubs in the NCEL.

The Brewers’ pre-season started with a 1-3 loss at home against Scarborough Town, who had Josh Greening among their goalscorers.

The league season started in fine style for Albion, when they picked up five straight victories. This included 5-0 against Glasshoughton Welfare and 4-1 at Hemsworth Miners Welfare. The winning start came to a halt with a 1-3 loss at Grimsby Borough, who would finish the season next to bottom.

2009 came to an end with four wins and three draws from seven games. At home, Pontefract Collieries, who would finish in fifth place, were beaten 3-0 and bottom club Worsbrough Bridge Athletic lost 0-4, whilst Staveley Miners Welfare, who ended the season in fourth position, were beaten 4-1 away. The final game of the calendar year resulted in a 4-4 draw against Rossington Main, in front of 41 fans - the lowest home crowd of the season. They witnessed four goals in the first eight minutes and a Darren Brandon hat-trick for Tad.

The new year brought a downturn in fortunes for the Brewers, with late goals being conceded at title rivals Brighouse Town (a 1-2 loss) and Leeds Carnegie (a 1-1 draw). More points were dropped against strugglers Grimsby Borough, who drew 1-1 at Tadcaster.

Thankfully, normal service resumed and six draw and a draw came in the next seven games. Staveley Miners Welfare were beaten 1-0 and there were late winning goals against Bottesford Town (90 minutes), Askern Villa (85) and Teversal (81). A battling point was picked up at Barton Town Old Boys, despite being 0-2 down after six minutes.

A 1-3 reverse came at Pontefract Collieries before another excellent run of results - five wins and a draw. Big victories were achieved at home over Appleby Frodingham (5-0), Eccleshill United (4-0), thanks to a Mike Braithwaite hat-trick,

and at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic (3-0).

The Brewers were battling with Brighouse Town for the title and a 1-3 defeat against their rivals, in front of 141 fans at Ings Lane, left Albion three points behind with just three games to play - all at home.

A 1-1 draw was picked up against free-scoring Leeds Carnegie and a 4-0 win over Yorkshire Amateur, setting up a must-win final game against Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

With Brighouse Town having finished all their games, the Brewers were two points adrift. So, a 2-1 victory, thanks to goals from Danny Pitts (65 minutes) and Mike Braithwaite (85 minutes), saw the title come to Tadcaster.

The Brewers finished top of the league - one point above Brighouse Town and two ahead of Leeds Carnegie, who had three points deducted - with 74 points from 34 games and a +43 goal difference.

The average attendance for NCEL Division One games at Ings Lane was 100, helped by a 452 crowd for that crucial final game against Hemsworth Miners Welfare.

As well as success in the league, the Brewers enjoyed several victories in cup ties - all against fellow NCEL Division One clubs.

In the FA Vase, there were qualifying round wins at Glasshoughton Welfare (2-1) and Brighouse Town (3-2) before a 0-1 loss at Northern League Division Two club Whickham, after extra time, in the first round.

Hemsworth Miners Welfare (4-2 after extra time) and Rossington Main (5-4 on penalties, after a 3-3 draw) were beaten in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy. Bottesford Town then ended Albion’s involvement with a 2-1 away win.

In the League Cup, Rossington Main and AFC Emley were both defeated 2-1 but Premier Division high-flyers Armthorpe Welfare beat the Brewers 5-1 in the fourth round.

There was a quick exit for Albion in the West Riding County Cup, with a 2-3 extra time loss against NPL Premier Division champions Guiseley.

Darren Brandon finished the season as the top goalscorer for the club, with 17 league and cup goals. Graeme Whitehead (12), Kevin Smith (11) and Mike Braithwaite (10) also reached double figures.

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Morton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Manchester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.

For more information on our U19 set up, please email [email protected].
