Financial Literacy SeriesThis is a series of 3 sessions aimed at directors who do not have a financial background. The sessions are intended to provide an introduction to core financial topics that should provide the foundation for all directors to fulfil their duties and make better informed strategic decisions to enable sustainable and resilient businesses.

The sessions would each be 3 hours long.

SESSION 1 Financial intelligenceAll directors need to understand the financial implications of board decisions as boards have a legal collective responsibility for those decisions. This session introduces core principles and explains financial terminology in order for the participants to gain confidence in their financial literacy.

Take-home Assignment: Case study for completion, which applies concepts learnt in the session.

SESSION 2 Key elements of financial resilienceFollowing on from the core financial literacy skills, this session’s aim is to enable participants to: understand the key elements of financial resilience, engage actively in board discussions, and question strategic decisions. Topics that will be covered include: Free Cash Flow, Key Drivers of Value in the Business, and Understanding and Managing Risk.

Take-home Assignment: Case study with relevant questions to reinforce principles and prepare for Session 3.

SESSION 3Planning for the future – the role of budgeting and cashflow forecasting in strategic planning • What are the elements of good budgeting processes? • The importance of the link to strategy and effectively choosing relevant KPIs to monitor progress. • The appreciation of any strategy’s inherent risks and uncertainty gives an understanding of when

action needs to be taken.

About The Course LeaderBusiness experience

Deborah is Programme Lead for the Institute of Directors (IOD), Finance for Non Finance Directors and also a course leader for the IOD flagship governance course, Role of the Director and Board. Alongside her role for the IOD, Deborah continues to be both a Company Director and a Trustee and also advises start up and early stage businesses. Her current roles include serving on an Advisory Board for a global risk and compliance organisation and charity trustee. Deborah is also a professional development partner for the Investor Relations (IR) Society where she is involved in syllabus development, content development and course tutoring for the professional qualification in IR.

Deborah’s broad career started with qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with a big 4 accountancy firm in London, working in corporate finance gaining wide ranging experience in a variety of corporates and financial institutions. The next stage in Deborah’s career was to gain experience as a company director, having set up and run several businesses and acted in a number of advisory roles.

Professional credentials and training experience

Deborah is widely credited with the ability to translate and communicate complex technical subjects and information simply and clearly with the emphasis on practical application – why do you need to understand this, and how will you apply it in your role? As Programme Lead for Finance for Non-Finance Directors, Deborah is responsible for syllabus reviews and writing the course handbook. The handbook has been praised for its clear, comprehensible communication of financial knowledge and its focus on financial literacy and application of finance for directors, enabling them to understand financial implications, contribute more effectively in decision making, take a long term sustainable view for their businesses and to fulfil their legal duties as directors. Deborah has always valued the opportunity to mentor and develop aspiring young directors as well as equipping more experienced company directors with essential financial literacy and communication skills.

Deborah specialises in finance, governance and investor relations training for all levels of financial background, from beginners to advanced, and to audiences ranging from SMEs to FTSE 100 board level. Deborah’s training experience over many years encompasses a diverse range of organisations including corporate clients, financial institutions as well as public sector bodies and charities, both in the UK and internationally. Examples include the Bank of England, Linkedin, Microgen, Morgan Stanley, IBM, a number of Stock Exchanges and Westminster Council.
