Building deep relationships, specialising in accom facilities Having worked in the finance industry for a few months just shy of 30 years, Nick Smith has always had a passion for helping people achieve their goals. Interestingly enough, this was not ‘supposed’ to be the pathway that young Nick would follow. An aspiring soccer player, until he signed a professional contract his parents advised that he choose one of three industries: “Food, money or houses, as everyone will always need them no matter how much the world changes.” He chose ‘money’ and went to work for the local bank on work experience. Without going into the finer details, a couple of ‘bad breaks’ (literally) and that professional contract with Chelsea never materialised. “Fast forward 30 years and my parents were right, people will always need money, whether you earn it, win it or borrow it, it is the biggest commodity in the world today. One other enduring piece of advice that came from my father, was ‘people buy from people, just be honest and upfront and people will trust you’, I tell people that same line today.” In an ever-changing world and landscape of banking, finance, lending, mortgage advice, whatever you want to call it, there is only one constant in all of it and that is the people and quite usually the ‘person’. “As a competitive sportsperson, I always wanted to be a winner, but also the one that other people would look to and say, ‘he’s a great player, but he is great bloke too’.” As a national, state and global award-winning finance expert, Nick has seen the various economy changes from the minefield of the late 80s through to the recent Global Financial Crisis in 2008 and now into a continuing Australian government investigation into banks and their practices. “The finance landscape is changing so often that it is difficult for the customer to be able to understand what is going on.
