This Final Sampling and Analysis Plan Aaendment No. 2 provides additional sampling details for performing Phaae II aediaent and surface water aa11pling and a culvert video inspection provram tor the Nyan1a III-Sudbury River Study in Ashland llaaaachuaetta. The Final supling and Analyaio Plan dated April 1990 will be IIOdified to i nclude the Phase II aampling .

The Final Work Plan - Volume II (August 1989) includes objectives, scope and general activities to be conducted in this auple round. The atudy area will, however be expanded in the Sudbury River to include river aediaent aupling pointe to the confluence of the Sudbury and Concord Riven, and a preliminary evaluation of some wetland in the river basin . Taaka included in Phase II aaapling ares

o Surface water and Sediment aamplin9 to fill in data gapa in Phaae I aaapling .

o Sedi..nt aampling in the Sudbury River tr011 the area of Beard Pond to the Concord River to deteraine the downriver extent of •ercury contuination in aediunta.

o Surface water and aediaent aaapling to provide additional background data.

0 Che•ical Brook Culvert video inapection to deteraine it the culvert providea a continuing aource of contaaination to the groundwater.

0 Evaluation of the depth and extent of cont•ination in the Trolley Brook Wetland.

z.o SUB MUG- PLAN

A detailed diacuaa ion addreaain9 the Site Manageunt Plan, atudy area control, organiaation and key peraonnel reaponaibilitiea ia preaented in Section 2. 0 of the Final SAP (April 1990).

A lield vehicle will aerve aa a aobile tield oftice during the Phaae II aaapling. A •atep-van• will be uaed to atore equipaent, provide apace for lield office taaka including preparation of IIJIPlea for ahip~ent, and provide a aecure facility for atorage of ...plea under chain of custody prior to ahipaent to a laboratory. Additionally , a temporary atora9e facility ILly be rented for atorage of equipment and aample shipping uterials .

The procedures dilcuaaed in Section 3. 0 of the Final SAP are generally applicable to Phase II aupling round. Additional Phaae II requireaenta and sample identification nUIIbera apecitic to thh phaae are diacuaaed in thil eection.

3. 4.1 a-tl• Identification Sxat•

The a.-ple identification ayatee described in Section 3 .4 .1 of the Final SAP will continue to be utilized during thia auple round. Ptlaae II aaapling is anticipated to begin in early Septellber, after the aonthly sampling round. The Septellber auple round h the tenth round and the Phase II sample round will be the eleventh round. Therefore the Sample Identification for Phase II will be as follows:

No fixed field facilities will be utilized durinq the field operations therefore demobilization will be minimised .

4.2.1 Culvert Inspection

NUS visually inspected the Chemical Brook and Trolley Brook culverts to determine the applicability of conductinc; a video inspection proqram. Based on results of the reconnaissance, only the Chemical Brook Culvert will be video inspected. The purpose of this task il to determine the 9eneral characteristics of culvert inte9rity and to determine if contaminated water or sediment bein9 transported by the culvert 11 leakinq into the groundwater via breaks in the culvert.

Screeninq and selection of a pipe inspection subcontractor will be initiated upon approval of the SAP Mendllent. The general location and direction of the culvert has been 4eterained and the video inspection will document in •ore detail the orientation of the culvert, interior conditions, potential for water/ae4iMnt leakage, aediMnt depoaition in the culvert, and the ahe and location of pipes or drains diacharginq into or out of the culvert .

To record the inspection, a pipe inspection floating televiewer with a wide angle lena will be floated /towed through the culvert. Water level, debris and other obstructions will atfect the coverage of the inspection. The use of an on-lite .anitor at the ground surface will enable real time viewinc; of culvert conditions at the tiM of the eurvey. The video tape will be keyed into eignificant structures or features within the culvert to provide docUMntation of culvert conditions.

4.2.2 Surface water lulpling

The Phase II surface water aaapling will be liaited to the collection of aaaples at 11 locations and installation of a staff gauc;e at the Pleaeant Street bridge upstream of Mill Pond .

Two surface water samplea will be collected fro. Mill Pond to provide "fill in" coveraqe of Phase I saaplinq . Three additional background water auplea will be collected froe the Sudbury Riveq one in the vicinity of location SWl-103/104 and a second from the backc;round tiah suple site near the intersection of Route 15 and Southville Road, The thir4 will be collected fr011 Cedar Swamp Pond. An additional six euplea will be collected at benthic saaple collection aites includinc; downstream of the Saxonville Dam (1), downstream of the outlet of Reaervoir 1 (1), in the vicinity of suple SDl-116 (1), downstream of the outlet of Mill Pond (1), and downstream of the pond at the intersection of Route 15 and Southville Road . These aitea are illuatrated on Fic;ure 4-lA.
