It is designed to showcase and nurture the finest young musicians residing in and around Frederick County Maryland. ABOUT THE FREDERICK SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA The Frederick Symphony Orchestra (FSO) is a community orchestra composed of professional and amateur musicians. Founded in 1997, the orchestra performs a series of concerts each year which include classical masterworks, music by contemporary composers, pops concerts, chamber music, and educational programs. Through its affiliation with Frederick Community College, the FSO performs at FCC’s Jack B Kussmaul Theater and qualified musicians receive college credit for playing in the ensemble. The orchestra also performs at Hood College’s Coffman Chapel. The orchestra is incorporated in the state of Maryland as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and is governed by its bylaws and the members of its Board of Directors. The Frederick Symphony Orchestra is committed to enriching the cultural climate of Frederick and its surrounding communities by providing opportunities for local musicians to perform and further develop their musicianship. The FSO’s combination of educational outreach, community involvement, and affordable entertainment has attracted increasing support from the community. FIRST ROUNDThe first round of the competition will be held digitally. Entrants must create a private Youtube video recording of their competition piece and send it to [email protected]. Submissions, application forms, and entry fees are due by midnight on January 3, 2020. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Each submission will be judged by three judges not affiliated with the FSO. These judges will be the same judges for the Final Round of the competition. Entrants will be notified by January 20, 2020 if they will move on to the Final Round. The judge’s comments will be shared with each entrant.

The five finalists in each division will perform for the Finalist’s Recital Round, performing their same repertoire as the First Round. Entrants in the Junior division will perform at 10 AM and entrants in the Senior division will perform at 3 PM.

The Final Round is open to the public. Flash photographyis prohibited.

The Grand Prize, Second Prize, and Finalists will be announced at the competition of the recital.

The judge’s written comments for the Final Recital Roundwill be e-mailed to finalists following the completion ofthe competition.

The Grand Prize Winners of the Young Artists Competition from each division and category must attend all required rehearsals with the FSO prior to the May 2, 2020 concert. The winner will forfeit the $500 prize if they, for any reason, are unable to perform at the May 2, 2020 concert.

REPERTOIRE: Entrants are required to perform one movement from a concerto or major work of their instrument’s standard orchestral repertoire.

• Memorization is preferred, but not required.

• Strings players are not permitted to perform music composed

after 1920 without approval from the Music Director.

• Entrants must select a movement that is 15 minutes or less

in performance length.

• Entrants are responsible for recording their first-round

submission and creating a private Youtube link to be shared

with [email protected]. Recordings must

include an accompanist.

• All repertoire is subject to the availability of the orchestral

parts. The Frederick Symphony Orchestra shall not incur

any cost above $500 total to obtain concert

accompaniment music. Should the winning entrant choose a

concerto with accompaniment parts that exceed the $500,

they shall be responsible for the excess cost of acquiring the

orchestral accompaniment.

• Entrants are responsible for researching prices and/or the

availability of orchestral parts. Any vendor of the entrants’

choosing may be used. Possible sources include:

JUDGES: A panel of three judges will adjudicate both rounds of the competition. Judges are not affiliated with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra. Judges are expected to recuse themselves from adjudicating any potential entrant for whom they currently provide or in the past have provided private instruction or for whom they may have any possible conflict of interest. The judges’ decisions are final.

ELIGIBILTY: The 2020 Young Artist Competition is open to advanced middle and high school instrumentalists in Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Washington, and Carroll counties. The 2020 competition instrument categories are open to all woodwind, brass, string, and percussion performers. Previous Grand Prize Winners may not compete in the 2020 competition.

DIVISIONS: There will be two age groups for the 2020 competition. Instrumentalists in grades 8 or below will compete in a junior division. Instrumentalists in grades 9-12 will compete in the senior division. Two winners will be chosen from each division: one strings winner and one woodwind/brass/percussion winner.

AWARDS: The four Grand Prize Winners will receive a $500 award and perform as a soloist with the Frederick Symphony Orchestra at its May 2, 2020, Slavonic Rhapsody performance. The Second Prize Winners will each receive a $150 prize.

ENTRY FORMS: Entry forms must be received by the Frederick Symphony Orchestra by Friday, January 3, 2020 and include the entrance fee of $50. Forms and entry fees can be submitted at fredericksymphony.org/young-artist-competition.

ACCOMPANISTS: Each entrant is required to have a piano accompaniment. Entrants are responsible for selecting their own pianist and communicating all dates, times, and locations to their pianist. Accompanists are required for both rounds of the audition process.
