INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, ‘Environmental Pollution Control’ has become the mostessential field of interest all over the world. The alarming increase of pollution dueto unscientific dumping of industrial and municipal wastes and/or to discharge ofeffluents from the industrial units into water bodies is a matter of great concern indeveloping countries. Now, it is the specific time to study the different forms ofpolluting agents in order to control the environmental pollution where solid wastemanagement is one of the important fields of interest.

Investigation of presence of elements in municipal and industrial wastescan theoretically be simulated by knowing the garbage status of the locality andraw materials used by various industries, respectively. However, the objective ofthe present project is to measure/study the toxicity level generated by variousmunicipalities and industries and to make them conscious statistically in order tomaintain the rules and regulations as directed by the state Pollution ControlBoard.

Generally, leachate is generated on account of the infiltration of water intolandfills and its percolation through waste as well as by the squeezing of thewaste due to self-weight. The quantity of leachate generated in a landfill isstrongly dependent on the quantity of infiltrating water. This, in turn, is dependenton weather and operational practices. The amount of rainfalling on landfill, to alarge extent, controls the leachate quantity generated. Precipitation depends ongeographical location. However, the statistical representation of analytical resultsof corresponding leachates will help the industries to be aware about theirpresent status and will certainly help them to take necessary action in order toprotect the environment. The other component of the project, i.e., comparison ofAAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometry) data with XRF (X-Ray Fluoroscence)results is still in progress. The results so far obtained are the combined results ofsome samples collected earlier from wastes of various steel industries and thesamples collected within the project tenure which are presented in ANNEXURE -II.

This presentation constitutes analytical reports of 168 industrial samples,11 non-industrial samples & 21 municipal samples and special emphasis havebeen tabulated statistically upon the toxicity level of various elements, area-wise.

CHAPTER-1

OBJECTIVES & METHODOLOGIES

Objectives of the study:

The main objective of this study is to investigate the amount of hazardouselements present in industrial and municipal solid wastes in West Bengal. Thespecial emphasis has been given on the leaching status of some specific toxicelements that causes environmental pollution. The other objective of the study isthe comparative study of the same sample using two different facilities, e.g.,Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) and X-Ray Fluoroscence (XRF).

Scope of work:

In order to achieve the above objective the following methodologies havebeen carried out-

1). Identification of solid waste generating industries as per Hazardouswaste (Management & Handling) Rules 1989.

2). Collection of the sample from the desired source.

3). Proper drying, crushing & mixing of the collected samples.

4). Weighing of the samples in specific amount and then are subjected tochemical and instrumental proceedings.

Proceedings:

Analysis for total metals:

As per instructions of the MDS (Microwave Digester System)-Manual, therequired amount of sample is taken in specific acidic media and the volume ismade up to 20 ml. After complete digestion, if necessary, the solution is filteredby Whatman-42 filter paper. Finally, the filtrate is subjected to AAS analysis. InAAS facility, six elements namely copper, lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel andchromium have been analyzed for the present project work.

In addition to the analysis of six metals, mercury analysis of veryfew samples and analysis of hexavalent chromium of some samples have alsobeen carried out as per standard methodologies.

5

Analysis for leachates:

For both buffer leachate and distilled water-extract the analyticalprocedure is identical. 5 grams of sample is taken in a 250 ml. conical flask. Tomake buffer solution the amount of sodium hydroxide solution and glacial aceticacid are dissolved in distilled water in such a way so as to maintain the pH of thesolution to 4.93. About 96 ml. of buffer solution is poured into conical flask forbuffer leachate and same amount of water is poured into the another conical flaskoperating for distilled water treatment, to ensure the volume to 100 ml. Then, boththe solutions are shaken rapidly (Vortex process), pH is adjusted, if necessary, and are subjected to incubation for 72 hours. Again, the solutions are allowed tocool. The instrument TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Process) is used forfiltration of leachates, and finally the filtrates are subjected to AAS study.

Analysis for total metals in mango leaf and nearby soil is one of theimportant and significant parts of this project. The comparative amount ofdeposition of hazardous elements in the leaves of trees and in the soil of adjacentarea and away from the industrial sites can provide us the comparative statisticaldata regarding environmental pollution.

Figure-1 is the graphical representation of the total no. of industries , theirtypes and total no. of samples analyzed (numbers 1-10 represents the differenttypes of industries) and Annexure 1 provides the data of annual solid wastegeneration of the industries visited so far.

Some of the industries in this category are located in Picnic Garden Road(Kolkata-39), Canal Circular Road (Kolkata-54) & Jogodyan Lane (Kolkata-54). Remaining samples consists of four other districts of West Bengal namelyHooghly, 24-Pargana (N), Howrah and Midnapore.. Three of the industrieshave been visited twice and after analyzing the collected samples minorimprovement have been noticed. Total lead deposition near secondary leadsmelting units almost reached alarming stage as compared to other sources.Surface soil is also contaminated significantly in the same premises. Only forthree samples, measurement of mercury have been executed but found noguilty amount.

The following table provides the statistical data of some lead smelting units.TABLE-6

Figure-2 clearly shows that the highest value of lead content of a sample inthe Picnic Garden Road area whereas other elemental exposures are bellow theirrespective danger levels. It’s leaching percentage is 19.3 which is really alarming.Though far more than this percentage are also found in several samples in thisarea, but their values of total metal contents found lower than the indicated value.

For other three areas of Kolkata namely, Canal Circular Road area,Jogodyan Lane area and Ganesh Chandra Avenue area where severalsecondary lead smelting units are running, the elemental status can be estimatedby their graphical representations as Figure3 - Figure5 respectively.

Samples having highest values obtained from analytical results have beenrepresented in figures. But if we go through the average leaching percentage oftoxic elements in each type of industry, graphs plotted later are not adequate. Inthis regard, other tables where the actual leaching status (buffer leaching) of thesolid wastes of investigating industries and municipalities have been put forwardare more meaningful.

Lv – Lowest Value, Hv – Highest Value, NA – Not Analyzed, LP – Leaching Percentage using sodiumhydroxide-acetic acid buffer solution at pH 4.93.

FINDINGS:

A) No. of industry under this category: 7 (seven).B) No. of sample analyzed: 14(fourteen).

The analytical results of first four samples (146-149) under this category showthat the samples contain high amount of lead and zinc as found in theirrespective total metal analysis. However, leaching percentages of lead isbelow detection limit and for zinc it is 4.2%. On the other hand, thoughcadmium is bearing a little bit of total content in these samples but the highestvalued sample contains a fatal leaching percentage. For other cases, alarming amount of lead is found in the sample numbers 151, 153 & 157. Zincis noticeably high in the sample numbers 149, 150, 155, 158 &in 159. Otherfour parameters like Cu, Cd, Ni and Cr are not remarkably high for all thesamples in this category except a little amount in the sample no. 159.

Following statistical data provides the amount of leachates of the solid wastes generated annually bysome zinc processing units.

CHAPTER-15CONCLUSIONS

Keeping in view the present scenario of solid waste generation and itselemental status of the investigating industries, it is felt that a lot of precautions tobe implemented effectively by the industrial as well as by the municipalauthorities for the protection of environment. Though very few industries andmunicipalities of the state have been covered so far for sample analysis, yet aneffective picture has been worked out. Elemental deposition on leaves of thetrees near any type of industry can ensure about the air pollution and leachatesof soil samples can provide data regarding the surface as well as the possiblewater contamination of those areas. Apart from these two types of samples, several waste samples from different industries as well as from different sites ofmunicipalities have been analysed quantitatively and its impact on environmenthas easily been estimated by knowing their amount of annual waste generation.
