WHAT IS COLOR?

Color is a component of light which is separated when it is reflected off of an object. So to

see color, you have to have light. Color is a quality such as red, blue, green, yellow and

others.

Color can be described by its name. Hue, saturation and brightness or intensity are different

dimensions that cause color varies.

How do we see color?

There are four types of light receptors in human eye: the rods and the cones of which there

are three types. The rod receptors are sensitive only to black, white and shades of grey. For

example in edge detection and they respond only to light and dark. The other three types of

receptors are called cones and its respond to different wavelengths of light, as follows: 'red',

'green', and 'blue-violet'. For example, when you look at an orange, the wavelengths of

reflected light determine what color you see. The light waves reflect off the orange peel and

hit the light-sensitive retina at the back of your eye. That's where cones come in.

MUNSELL COLOR SYSTEM

HISTORY OF COLOR

Sir Isaac Newton invented the color wheel's basic colors in 1666. He split white sunlight into

red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet and arranged them into a natural

progression on a rotating disk. When the disk spins, the colors will blur together rapidly that

the human eye sees white. A century after Newton, Johann Wolfgang Goethe created a color

wheel showing the psychological effect of each color. He divided all the colors into two

groups which is the plus side that are from red through orange to yellow and the minus side

that from green through violet to blue. The plus side color produce excitement and

cheerfulness and the minus side are associated with weakness and unsettled feelings. Albert

Henry Munsell invented the Munsell color system. Munsell color system is a color space that

specifies colors based on three color dimensions like hue, value, and Chroma.

COLOR THEORY

Color theories create a logical structure for color. Subtractive Color using pigments or filters

absorb some of the wavelengths of light and reflecting or transmitting others. We are using

the subtractive color method to do Computer printouts, stop lights, silk screen t-shirt and mix

color for painting. The Primary Colors of subtractive Color is Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. The

secondary Colors are Red, Green and Blue.

Additive Color is the colors we see on the TV, PSP or iPod screen that are created with light

using the additive color method. The Additive Theory works when colors are added together

to make different colors or white light. The Primary Colors of additive color is Red, Green, and

Blue. The Secondary Colors is Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

COLOR PROPERTIES

The color wheel also known as color circle based on red, yellow and blue, is traditional in the field of

art. The color wheel shows the relationship between the primary colors, secondary colors, and

complementary colors.

Primary colors are yellow, blue, and red. These three colors are the only colors that cannot be reproduced by mixing other colors together.

Secondary colors are produced when mixing yellow with blue

(green), yellow with red (orange), and blue with red (purple).

Tertiary colors are the color that mixing one of the primary

colors with a secondary color to its left and right.

COLOR HARMONIOUS

Analogous Colors are located right next to each other on

the color wheel. For examples, Red and orange, blue and green.

Complementary Colors are located directly across from

each other on the color wheel.

Split Complementary Color is made up of three hues. In

addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement.

Triad color uses

any three colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel . For example, yellow, blue

and red.

Tetrad color uses a

combination of four colors that arranged into two sets of complementary colors. For

example:
