TASK 9

Page 2: Final project

INTRODUCTION Urban planning is process concerned with

the control of the use of land and design of the urban environment, including transportation networks, to guide and ensure the orderly development of settlements and communities.

A sustainable society meets the needs of the present without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Page 3: Final project

Assigned to design and plan the town of Kajang, Selangor. Kajang, is a town in the eastern part of Selangor, Malaysia. It is the district capital of Hulu Langat. The current locational gravity of growth in Kajang would be Sungai Chua. Kajang is governed by the Majlis Perbandaran Kajang

Transportation Public transportation - enhance connective

network Integrated ticketing

E. Parking Limit car parking ≤ standard Provides parking for disabled persons Secure cycle parking lorry and motor cycle parking

Parking Designi. Interlocking parking design

maximize the size of openings at the surface to maximize infiltration

trees are incorporated in tree grates, rotated 45 degrees which able to gather rainwater at the grates.

Page 15: Final project

Vegetated parking system

Page 16: Final project

ii. Automated parking design

about 75 percent of the footprint than a conventional parking structure

significant amount of emissions are eliminated automated parking structures is structural steel

which has a high recycled materials content.

Page 17: Final project

iii. Green roof parking system reduced storm water control measures decreased maintenance/ restoration costs and the opportunity for additional uses

Page 18: Final project

F. Urban Design Principles create green, sustainable places Compact, walkable places are the most

sustainable form of living.

Page 19: Final project

Designing away the need for cars has the triple effect

-lowering our energy use-reducing global warming emissions-raising our quality of life in cities by increasing mobility and convenience.

Page 20: Final project

i. Links through spaces

Page 21: Final project

ii. Wrapping the box

Page 22: Final project

iii. Mixed building uses and car parking

Access to facilities is more convenient. Travel-to-work congestion is minimised as this

allows potentially more journeys by bike or on foot. There is greater opportunity for social interaction Streets are generally more active at different times

of the day, bringing with it a greater feeling of safety

Page 23: Final project

iv. Public and private space

Legibility – A place that has a clear image and is easy to understand. The main entrances to public and other major buildings should be emphasised through carefully designed streets, lighting, signage and paving.

Page 24: Final project

G. Context The design, location and function of buildings can

help reinforce the identity of routes and spaces within the public

Well-designed public spaces can help people find their way around the city and provide informal recreational space

H. Safety and Security

shall provide sufficient police stations, police posts, police patrols Place the closed-circuit television (CCTV)

Design or redesign principles

i. LightingTo ensure the appropriate placement of

lighting to avoid shadows and glare which might put pedestrians at risk

ii. Natural surveillance and sightlines; To provide unimpeded sightlinesTo encourage natural surveillance from

surrounding buildings and land uses.

Page 30: Final project

iii. Signage; To provide adequate, easily legible signage to

assist pedestrians, particularly older people and people with disabilities, to find their way safely.

Page 31: Final project

iv. Building design; To reduce the risk of public buildings contributing

to crime or safety problems. For example, provide windows overlooking public

areas, avoid locating toilets, service areas and ramps in isolated areas and avoid designing features that create entrapment spaces.

Page 32: Final project

vi. Management and maintenance. Promptly repair damage to public spaces to

ensure safety for all users and to reduce the risk of crime.

Use imaginative solutions to overcome vandalism problems, such as wallmurals painted by local street artists and formalising informal pathways subject to vandalism.

Conclusion Authorities need to come up with sustainable plans to make use of the resources available in the highly populated areas

Help to promote development in an area as well as solve some of the problems that face urban areas such as high population and sanitation problems.

Page 51: Final project

Enable correction of mistakes that had earlier being made in the design of urban areas

Environmental protection Sustainable infrastructure Health of a population Enough land to carry out agricultural activities
