STRAIGHT HORIZONTAL
A constructive line, either drawn or imagined, that passes through the
point of sight. Creates a feeling of solidity and provides strength.
The East Carolina bridge is a perfect straight horizontal line. It is sturdy
and gives a repose feeling. When one drives under a bridge, most get a
calming and relaxing feeling. Whether one is driving over or under them,
there is a peaceful mood.
![Page 8: Final project (2)](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020419/568bd8d01a28ab2034a4be4b/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
STRAIGHT VERTICAL
A line in the upright position. They appear to
extend upwards beyond human reach, towards
the sky. They often dominate public
buildings, from churches to corporate
headquarters.
The tall columns on East Carolina’s campus add
height and strength to the campus. Walking
through these pillars also gives one the feeling of
dignity and importance. They also add
emphasizes is put on the library drawing students
to it.

CURVED FLOWING
A line that deviates from
straightness in a smooth
manner. Adds gracefulness
and delicateness.
These stairs provide a calm
movement throughout the
area. One gets a calm sense.

Usually associated confusion. Like the mayhem
of lines.
In this tight curved line a is crowd formed. The
chaos of the football stadium is somewhat tamed
by this tight curve.

SURFACE QUALITY REAL
(TACTILE TEXTURED)
Physical texture is how the texture feels when
one touches it; rough or smooth.
The physical texture of this brick wall is rough
and coarse. Some stick out more than others and
that creates a jagged edge.
![Page 13: Final project (2)](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020419/568bd8d01a28ab2034a4be4b/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Implied texture looks like something it is not.
The surface is suppose to look like rough marble but it
exactly is a smooth surface. The marble-like surface on
the shelf creates variety and interest in the bathroom

A texture that does not

This sidewalk is concert and
does not reflect any light. It
seems dull, bland, and
rough.

This painting has
many shapes that
form one interesting
and appealing
painting.
![Page 44: Final project (2)](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020419/568bd8d01a28ab2034a4be4b/html5/thumbnails/44.jpg)
GEOMETRIC
http://www.zibbet.com/DivaArt69/artwork?art

Shapes are used to create
something pleasing while
keeping the shape.
The circles and squares are

NATURAL/ORGANIC
Natural shapes form one
natural shape.
Two triangles make a square or
rectangular shape. That is
demonstrated in this photo. It
is logical and natural.
![Page 46: Final project (2)](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020419/568bd8d01a28ab2034a4be4b/html5/thumbnails/46.jpg)

GEOMETRIC
The spaces form into a bigger
shape.
The square windows form a 3-
D pentagon. Creative and
different. The building will get
noticed because the shape
attracts the eye.

NATURAL
The shapes form
something that looks
natural.
Triangles, rectangles, and
squares are used to form a
human like object. Its
interesting and noticeable.

entirely different design.
The triangles in the nails
creates amazing designs.
Its pretty and pleasing to
the eye.

VISUAL SYMMETRY
Object appears to be
symmetrical.
The object seems to be the
same on both sides, but one
side is longer than the other.
Creates sense of balance
and harmony.
![Page 53: Final project (2)](https://reader031.vdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022020419/568bd8d01a28ab2034a4be4b/html5/thumbnails/53.jpg)
STRUCTURAL SYMMETRY
Everything is the same on
each side.
The circle is the same on
each side. Balance the size
of the circle.
Demonstrates
organization.

VISUAL ASYMMETRY
Almost symmetrical.
The building is the same
except for the furthest left
column. Seems to still go
together and flow.

VISUAL RADIAL SYMMETRY
Objects seem to
come outward
from a point.
There are lines that
appear to come
out from the circle.

STRUCTURAL RADIAL SYMMETRY
Lines or objects come
out from a point.
The pillars sprout out
from the top circle of
the cupola.
