Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the CSCTR and AFMR Program Committee, I welcome you to the 2016 Combined Annual Meeting.

I hope you have been looking forward to this meeting as much as I have; to learn from the most prestigious leaders in our fields and to collaborate with one another. My sincere hope is that you are able to take much away from this meeting, which will resonate long afterwards in your career.

CSCR (as it was then known) held its first meeting in November 1928, and in October 1969 the first joint meeting of CSCTR and MWAFMR convened. Throughout that long history, our meeting has accomplished its mission to share research techniques, new findings, and learn the latest on the management of diseases and disorders across various subspecialties of medicine.

I extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Program Committee for creating an outstand-ing program. Special thanks go to the many reviewers required to score the five-year record high of 142 abstracts. They are listed on page 24. Are you interested in reviewing abstracts for the 2017 meeting? Return the interest form in your packet to the registration desk, complete the form on the Meeting App, or send an email to [email protected].

In addition to the excellent program be sure to attend the Sugar Club Thursday at 6:30 pm, the Mentor Breakfast 7:30 am Friday – both in Frank Lloyd Wright 1 & 2 – and engage in the Poster Hall 5:00 pm Thursday, and 11:30 am and 3:10 pm Friday in Burnham Ballroom B.

Finally, I encourage you to continue your involvement in CSCTR and/or AFMR. Check out our websites for membership information. And save-the-date for the 2017 Annual Meeting – April 20 & 21 right here at the Mid-America Club.

I hope you enjoy your time at what I believe will be another outstanding Annual Meeting!

Sincerely,

Ellen McCarthy, MD CSCTR President

Welcome

Department Chair Session IIMark W. Geraci, MD Presiding

Mark Geraci was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. He completed his un-dergraduate training at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Following grad-uation from the Johns Hopkins Univer-sity School of Medicine, he completed training in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. After

training in Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medi-cine at the University of Colorado he remained as faculty, eventually to Head the Pulmonary Division. He is current-ly the John B. Hickam Professor and Chair of Medicine at Indiana University.

Dr. Geraci is a tremendous contributor to medical edu-cation, and has served as President of the Association of Specialty Professors for the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine, and as a member of their Education Committee.

Catherine Rufatto Sears, MD

Dr. Sears graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and com-pleted an Internal Medicine residency at Vanderbilt University. She trained as a Pulmonary and Critical Care fellow at Indiana University School of Medicine and during that time, developed an interest cigarette-smoke-induced lung

disease with a particular interest in lung cancer. Dr. Sears trained in the laboratory of Dr. John Turchi, an expert in the role of DNA repair in lung cancer treatment response, and was recruited to continue her research at Indiana University as a junior faculty. This collaboration has been successful, resulting in additional funding and publica-tions which have further defined the mechanistic role of DNA repair processes on cancer cell response to chemo-therapy and radiation treatment, leading to the testing and development of small molecular inhibitors which can augment lung cancer response to chemotherapeutic and radiation treatments.

Dr. Sears is a clinician scientist, and the majority of her clinical time is spent staffing a pulmonary oncology clinic. In addition, Dr. Sears is investigating the impact of DNA repair on smoking-induced lung disease and early lung cancer development and was recently awarded a Men-tored Research Scholars Grant from the American Cancer Society to study the impact of the DNA repair protein, XPC, on smoking-induced lung cancer development. She is presenting some early data from this project today.
