Where I come from

Ethiopia
● Was not colonized, though
Italians occupied it for at
least five years.
● The Ethiopian Calendar has
13 months and it is 7 ½
years behind the Gregorian
calendar.
● 105 million (2017), 2nd
most populous country(190)
● Ethiopia is the only
country to use a time
system with a 12-
hour clock counting
from dawn to dusk,
and from dusk to
dawn.
● Official working
language is Amharic
and the two other
main ones are
Tigrigna and
Oromigna.

Why South Africa ?
● Wanted to visit a country
in Africa aside from
Ethiopia
● South Africa was the only
option available with
CIEE
● I wanted to do grassroots
work and not just in
some office in DC
Why Africa Unite ?
● Last minute blessing with
AU
● I chose it because of the
human rights work I saw
on the website
● To help me gain
intercultural
communication skills
with people from
different backgrounds
My time with Africa Unite
What I learned
● Deeper understanding of Post-
Apartheid South Africa
● The importance of educating
individuals about human rights
● Seeing the economic differences
between races
● Understanding the lives of those in the
townships
● Understanding what it’s like to be part
of an NGO in S.A.
What I worked on
● Creating posters for events
● Helping out with event
planning/attending meetings
● Working on concept notes
● Creating a task tracker for the office
● Making the handbook for school club
● Compiling info for the AR
Recommendations
● Making interns create more
fundraising events just like 30
seconds.
● Communication
● Creating a cloud or online drive
where information can be
accessed for interns
● More on the ground work for
interns … *depending on the
season
