Originally we wanted to do something rugged, something that is simple yet has a clean form. Then we stumbled upon tribal arts while generating our concepts. We decided to take 2 elements from tribal arts such as, ex-pressionism as art from, and leather as material. This development step allowed us to merge the industrial style with tribal style as a new form of modern tribal art. The main materials we experi-mented with are acrylic sheet and vegetable-tanned leather. In terms of technology we had bright led light stripes and a simple on/off switch. The reason for this is based on the usual behaviors and habits employed by our target user group. There are high percentage of people educated and accustomed to this form of interaction.

Form/Processmetaphors:The design of the lamp is tribal like in nature, it also has element of kaleidoscope.design paradigm:Experimenting with two different materials to bring out their best functions that make use of both material properties. In our case, It’s the transparency/bending of acrylic and the scrolling/blocking of leather. This allows the design to be contrastly complementary to one another, pulling the attentions to the uniqueness of the design.

Materiality Acrylic sheet, vegetable-tanned leather, threads, led light stripes, switch, power adaptor, and metal screws

TechnologyLighting technology/mechanical interaction:LED light stripes 12V, 2amp. These rows of lighting stripes connect to the detachable circular switch with power cords and power adaptors.

Form of interaction:To turn on the light use the main switch, then adjust the angle with metal screws. Then, pull the leather skin either ways to increase/decrease the brightness of the light by choosing bigger patterns.

Components:1. Base (switch with the hang for tilting)2. Support (2 straight lines to hold the chamber with leds)3. The light chamber (Allows leather skin to overlay on top)4. The leather skin with cut outs (produces lighting patterns and controls the brightness of light)

FabricationLaser cutting for all the needed parts. The measurements were done with actual prototype model then processed in the illustrator for improvement. We had Laser cutting for both the acrylic structures (shapes) and leather skin (patterns)

InteractionThere are 3 major parts, the base, the support, the leather skin.1st. Turn on the light use the main switch, then adjust the angle with metal screws. 2nd, pull the leather either ways to increase/decrease the brightness of the light by choosing smaller/bigger patterns.

Persona

Karen is a 25 years old university student in design program, she does part time at museum of art as an office assistant. Her job is interesting and she is really into tribal arts as a form for artistic expression. She is looking a desk lamp for her workplace for both decorative and functional purpose.

Deerskin as the uncommon material. It will be used for the bulb cover as well as the base stand. It is supple and light brown in color. This is the only form of leather suitable for use in leather carving or stamping.

Acrylic sheet as the common material. It will be used for the support and the base stand of the lamp. It is easy to mold and easy access. The cost is relatively low as well.

Threads will be used to sew pieces of leather together.
