HistoryFoundedbyMrs.LynnLuttrell,OleloChristianAcademy(OCA)hasarichhistoryofeducatingandinspiringchildrento“PursueExcellencetotheGloryofGod.”TheschoolbeganintheLuttrellhomeasKauaiEducationalSupportServices,offeringahomeschoolatmospherewithaprivateschoolcurriculum.LynncametoKauaionmissionarysupporttoteachatKauaiChristianAcademyaftergraduatingwithateachingdegreefromBiolaUniversityinthe1970’s.ShelatermarriedPhilLuttrell,whoservedastheKauaiChristianAcademyprincipalformanyyears.Lynncamehometoraisetheirchildrenandfosterchildrenandsoonbegantoconducthomeschoolforfriendsandneighborswhoappreciatedherexpertise.AsLynn’schildrengrew,LynncompletedherMastersinEducationalAdministrationwiththedreamofopeningaschoolonKauai.HerdreamwasrealizedinSeptember2002.Theoriginalmotto“God’sWord,GreatWords,MyWord,”encapsulatedOCA’spurposebyfocusingonGod’sWordfirstandforemost,helpingeachstudenttogrowthroughgreatwordsbygivingthemaloveforlearningandencouragingthemintheirownwordasindividualsofintegrityandhonor.FromthosehumblebeginningsOleloremainstruetoitsoriginalpurposeandmission.TheschoolhasbeenhousedinseveralLihuelocationspriortoourcurrentfacilityonRiceStreet.2015wasayearofgreatanticipationasOlelosaidfarewelltoPrincipalScottElledgeandwelcomedournewDirector,LisaPooleandteachers,KyleandRaeganInman.Wecontinuetoprovideahands-on,uniqueeducationalexperienceforeachchild,centeredonGod’sWordandaBiblicalworldview.Wehaveanewlogo,anewlook,andtheprospectsforthefuturearebright!TheOCADifference

ClassesBegin,Changes&TheBellAtapproximately8:10eachmorningclasseswillbegin.Throughout thedayabellwillringwhenitistimetochangeclasses.Allstudentsshouldmovepromptlytohisorhercubbytogetwhatisrequiredfortheclassandbeseatedandreadyforclasstostart.
Chapel ChapelisaspecialtimeatOCA.WegathertogethertoworshipourGodandhearHisWord.Parents,studentsandfacultyarealwaysinvitedtoattendChapelforprayer,worship,andaspecialspeaker.ChapelisheldonWednesdaysfrom8:15to9:00.
Recess/PhysicalEducationRecess/Physical Education will occur daily. For our Pre-K and Kindergartenstudents this may consist of multiple physical activities throughout the day. OurolderstudentswillalsohaveaformaltimeofPEthroughouttheweek.
Lunch&UseofRestroomsOCAcurrentlydoesnotpossessthefacilitiestoprovidehotpreparedmeals.Studentsneedtobringtheirownluncheachday.Amicrowaveovenandrefrigeratorareavailableforstudentuse.Asnackshopwillalsobeavailable.Onoccasionwewillmakeyouawareofspecialfooddayswhenwewillmakealunchavailableatanominalfee(example:pizzaday).TheAfternoonAfternoonswillconsistofmoreclasses,endingatapproximately2:20for“CampusCleanup.”Studentswillhavetheopportunitytodoafewtaskstokeepourschoollookingthewaywealldesireittobeandmaybetryafewnewthings.Wepromiseitwillbeenjoyableandnotburdensome.Dismissal

OleloChristianAcademytakesourCodeofConductseriously.IneverythingwedowewanttobeprofessionalladiesandgentlemendoingallthingsforthegloryofGod.WerepresentHimwhileatschool,athome,andinourcommunity.WerespectfullyrequestyoursupportandsignaturesfortheOCAStudentParentResolutionandtheCodeofConductincludedintheHandbook.CommunityServiceAllstudentswillparticipateinregularcommunityservice.ThisincludeshelpingoncampusatCampusCleanup,workingtogetherinacommunityproject,orperformingincommunityoutreachessuchasperformingatCommunitySeniorCitizenslocations.WewanttoseeourcommunitiesbenefittingfromourloveofGod!Instructionsandformswillbeprovidedwhenworkingoff-campus.Technology&SocialNetworkingPolicyOCAunderstandsthepopularityandusefulnessofsocialnetworkingsitesanditsusebystudentsoutsideofschool;however,sitesshouldreflectourintentiontodoallthingstothegloryofGod!
ElectronicDevicesandCellPhonesElectronicdevices&cellphonesneedtobekeptathomeor intheOFFposition&storedinthestudent’sbackpackorpurseifbroughttoschool.Thesedevicesarenotallowedinourclassrooms.Thosewhoviolatethisrulemayforfeittheirprivilegetobringthemtoschoolanddevicesmaybeconfiscateduntiltheparentcomestopickthemup.

OCA’sdresscodeisintendedtogivepracticalwitnesstotheschool’scommitmenttohonorGodandprovidealearningenvironmentwhereallstudentscanconcentratewithoutbeingdistractedbydress.Ourdresscodeisdesignedtoencouragemodesty,decency,andproprietyanddiscouragestheuseofclothingasasignificantmeansofestablishingself-identity,gainingattention,orsocialstatus.WhileoncampusoratanyOCAfunction,thedresscodemustbefollowedunlessotherwisespecified.Accordingtothediscretionofourschooladministration,ifastudentisdeemedinappropriatelydressed,parentswillbenotifiedandaskedtoremedythisimmediatelyeitherbypickinghim/heruporbringinghim/herappropriateclothing.OCAreservestherighttomakedecisionsonwhatisorisnotappropriate.Supervisionofappropriatestudentdressistheresponsibilityoftheparents.DressCodeforFemaleStudents-DailyWear:

SAFETY POLICIES AND PROCEDURES GeneralSafetyPoliciesOCAbelievesinasafeandsecureenvironmentforyourchild.AllOCAstudentswill,atalltimes,showrespectandcareforthefacility,eachother,andanyotherpropertiesusedbyOCA.Teacherswillassisteachstudentthroughoutthedaywithhisorherclassroomscheduleandroomchanges.Teacherswillalsomonitoractivityduringtimesofchanges.In the event of an emergency, illness or other problem, parents will be called atworkorathome.Iftheparentscannotbereached,theemergencycontactindicatedby the parent on your registration form will be called. Please let us knowimmediatelyiftherearechangestoyouremergencynumbers.
Fire drills are held periodically. In the event of fire, the childrenwill be directedawayfromthebuildings.
Medication&SickPolicyIfyouhaveaspecialmedicationrequestforyourchildpleaseseetheOCADirector.Permissionforofficeandschoolstafftoadministerover-the-countermedications(suchasBenadryl,Robitussin,Tylenol,etc.)willberequiredandaMedicalEmergencyReleaseFormwillberequiredpriortothestartoftheschoolyear.Intheunfortunateeventyourchildshouldbecomeillduringtheschoolyearwewillmakeeveryefforttocontactyouandprayerfullycomfortandcareforthechilduntilyouarrive.OCAtakesthespreadofgermsseriously.Ifyourchildissickwithafeverpleasekeephimorherhome for theday.Wewanteveryone tohaveagreatyearandcurtailingthespreadofgermswhenwearesickisabenefitforall.SevereWeatherPolicyOCAisnotlocatedinatsunamiinundationzone,soincaseofatsunamiwarningwearenotrequiredtoevacuate.Intheeventofatsunamiorflashfloodwarningtheseprocedureswillbefollowed:

HurricaneortropicalstormwatchesareissuedbytheNationalWeatherService36hourspriortothearrivalofthestormeffects.HurricaneortropicalstormwarningsareissuedwhenoneofthesestormscouldaffectKauaiin24hoursorless.Whenawatchisissued,wewillmonitorthestormandmakedecisionsaboutschoolclosurebeforetheissuanceofawarning.LocalCivilDefenseradiostation(KONG93.5FM)willannounceschoolclosures.
ShouldanearthquakeofsignificantmagnitudeoccuronKauai,weshouldanticipateconsiderable disruption to our roads. The childrenwill be cared for until parentscansafelypickthemup.
SchoolClosingIn accordance with the US Department of Education, OCA will adhere to thefollowingpoliciesintheeventofschoolclosingforanextendedperiodoftime.
• Prior to possible school closures, OCA administration will communicatefrequently with families regarding specific procedures and policies as theydevelop. If a school closure is imminent, documentation on official schoolletterheadandane-mailwillbesenthomeassoonasthedecisionismade.Ifadecision is made to close the school during off hours (when school is not insession), an announcement will be made over the civil defense radio station(KONG93.5).
• Administrationwill keep families informedofprogressvia school-widee-mail.Individualconcernswillbehandledeitherbyphoneore-mailinatimelymanner.Administrationwillbeavailableduringschoolclosureswheneverpossible.
• If there is advance warning about school closure, teachers will send studentshomewith all books required for the closure period. If advance notice is notavailableandschool isclosedwithoutwarning, stepswillbe taken tomakeallthenecessarymaterialsavailable.Teacherswill assignworkandcommunicatewithstudentsandparentsviae-mail.

Admissions&AgeRequirementAdmissiontoOleloChristianAcademyisbyapplication.PleaseseetheAdmissionsPackageforTheSimple3-StepProcessandnecessaryforms.FinancialinformationisprovidedintheFinancialPoliciesSectionbelow.Studentswhoareadmitted toOCAmustbe fiveyearsoldby July31andmaynotexceedage19upongraduation.JuniorKindergartenchildrenshouldbe4yearsoldbyJuly31,althoughexceptionsmaybemadeonacase-by-casebasis.
CourseOverviewStudents will receive a course overview or a syllabus for each class. ClassrequirementsandtheclassGradingmethodologywillbeshared.GradeLink
GradeLinkisanonlinemanagementsystemthatprovidesparentsandstudentswithinstantaccesstogrades,attendance,homework,andsomuchmore.Yourstudent’sGradeLinkaccounthasbeencreatedandtheonlythingyouwillneedtodoisloginusingtheofficeissuedusernameandpassword.Returningstudentswillnotbeissuednewlogininformation.Youwilluseyourusernameandpasswordfromlastyear.Ifyouforgotyourlogininformation,followthedirectionsbelow.GradeLinkisavailableasanapponmobiledevices.Oncepurchasedthroughtheappstore,itcanbeaddedto5devices.Theappisoptional.GradeLinkcanbeaccessedthroughtheinternetonanycomputer.WeencourageparentsandstudentstocheckGradeLinkregularlytoavoidsurpriseswhenreportcardsgohome.

90-100% = A
80-89% = B

Plus (+) and minus (-)grades are often assignedby teachers to reflect thetwo upper and two lowerpercentages of each lettergrade.

Attendance&TardyPolicyRegular attendance is essential to a child’s academic success in school. Three unexcused tardies constitutes one absence. Tardieswill be excused for thefollowingreasons:

When carpooling, the student who causes the others to be late will receive anunexcusedtardy;theotherstudentswillreceiveanexcusedtardy.OleloChristianAcademyhas the final judgment in theadministrationof the tardypolicyandasalwaysextenuatingcircumstanceswillbeconsideredonacasebycasebasis.
