Meet our newest staff member, Molly t. Chicken, a sassy hen with decided opinions she’s not afraid to share. You’ll find her popping up here and there on our website and social media!

Cover Photo:We think our cover guy has all the right moves! get to know Kurt Kavanaugh, Director of Charleston Moves on page 20!

I’ve been so inspired this issue by talking with the ingenious people and hearing their surprisingly cost effective solutions we’re featuring that help create an environment that encourages Charlestonians to get moving! Not just physically by hopping on bikes or walking to work or on errands but also progressively, so that we can hold our own with any city in America when it comes to community and environmental concerns.

Reports show that not only are more people biking and walking to work and on errands than ever but also that the more people bike and walk, the FEWER accidents there are involving bikers and pedestrians. The more drivers see folks biking and walking, the more careful and aware they are. And with so many examples to follow of cities and towns who transform their images, their residents’ lives and entire communities through bold-yet-totally-doable initiatives, Charleston has no excuse not to accomplish similar victories.

Enjoy this rolling, rollicking issue and use it as a directory to know what to do, buy, eat and drink this Spring in Charleston.

MUSC’S UrBAN FArM GroWS heALth & WeLLNeSS IN the heArt (AND heArtS) oF ChArLeStoNGet down to MUSC asap and discover kindred spirits with community spirit!

Our first entre into this wonderful, uber-urban farm, located right downtown on the corner of Bee and President Streets, was an elegant, lantern lit farm to table ‘do (courtesy of Commune., a supper cult dedicated to local chefs working magic with local foods). We explored the beautiful gardens, admired the new additions of more raised beds, marveled at how many features could be contained in a mere half acre and found that our table-mates-slash-kindred-spirits included dedicated MUSC staff members, sharing their urban farm stories along with our repast. Well done!

the MISSIoN oF the MUSC UrBAN FArM “To build a healthier community by growing crops and social connections while educating and inspiring people with local, nutritious, and delicious food. The MUSC Urban Farm will host educational programs throughout the growing season demonstrating accessible, preventative approaches that can improve diet and impact health.”

Not only does MUSC share the farm (more like an urban ‘stead) with the community, hosting everything from workshops, school field trips, yoga and exercise, suppers and more, they also see the farm as the heart of MUSC, boasting everything from work and learn programs to sharing the farm’s bounty with MUSC personnel through rewards (called coupons for crops) for great work and using the employee-grown goodies for food/health/nutrition awareness activities - an invaluable service since health workers are notorious for high stress and bad health/eating practices in their noble efforts to heal others!

the CroPSThe farm grows organic goodies year round with produce planted and harvested during the spring and fall growing seasons. Over 40 varieties of vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown in South Carolina can be found in there! Go to academicdepartments.musc.edu/ohp/urban-farm to download information on how to plant, grow, harvest, and eat ‘em and to facebook/musc urban farm to see what’s up each week, with both events and crops.

the BUzz oN theIr BeeShow cool is it that this fabulous farm is host to a hive donated by one of our fav projects, the Bee Cause? Knowing that one in three bites of our food requires pollination and there is serious concern about pesticides and the infamous colony collapse disorder threatening the honey bee population, the urban farm is the perfect spot for urban bees and the education of how valuable they are.

Gee, DoN’t BreAK the BANK…Leviathan (and some claim megalomaniacal) GMO giant Monsanto, famous for suing farmers, winning a dubious victory against the Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association (after agreeing NOT to sue innocent growers for having their crops contaminated with Monsanto products!) and for having a reported budget of around $10 million per year for investigating & prosecuting farmers, has donated a—get this—whopping 25 thousand dollars to SC farmers affected by floods in the Plant It Forward campaign. To put the “generous” donation in perspective, Monsanto has a budget of $2.6 million per DAY for “research and development” and the state farmers suffered upwards of $300 million dollars in damage... Hmmm... wonder how much money was invested BY farmers in Monsanto products before the flood that year—think it might be a leeeetle more than $25,000? We’ll let lily readers decide for themselves whether or not to insert eye roll here.

GeNerAL MILLS, Bee reAL… Congratulations General Mills for calling attention to the honey bee conundrum by taking the iconic cartoon bee off your Honey Nut Cheerios box and urging consumers to understand the importance of the honey bee colony collapse disorder due to pesticides, GMO food crops that use dangerous pesticides during the growing process and for touting the use of whole grain oats—a non genetically modified product—in your cereal.

But the thing is… you still use genetically modified sugar beets as sweetener, a whopping 9 grams of sugars per serving (vs only 1 gram in regular cheerios), and other ingredients used are sugar and corn starch—which, along with "natural” flavors and canola oil, are ingredients that are most likely derived from GMO sources. And there’s not nearly enough fiber in there anyway!

DoN’t PANIC!the BeGINNING oF the eND oF the ANtIBIotIC erA hAS BeeN ANNoUNCeD. WhAt DoeS thAt MeAN? “THE ANTIBIOTIC OVERUSE PANDEMIC HEALTH CRISIS” is an actual thing—just ask entities such as the World Health Organization (WHO), The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Emerging Infections Network. The facts are more than alarming. But there are solutions, alternatives and tons of exceedingly encouraging studies and breakthroughs that can see an educated populace through the storm. Knowledge is power. And know that YOU are your BEST HEALTH ADVOCATE.

FACtS: The CDC has classified a number of bacteria as presenting urgent threats, “many of which are already responsible for placing a substantial clinical and financial burden on the U.S. healthcare system.”

Many public health organizations have described the rapid emergence of resistant bacteria as a “crisis” or “nightmare scenario” that could have “catastrophic consequences.

MDR bacteria have been declared a substantial threat to U.S. public health and national security by the IDSA and the Institute of Medicine, as well as the federal Interagency Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance.

MRSA (a Staph infection) kills more Americans each year than HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, emphysema, and homicide combined.

SoLUtIoNS:ASK QUESTIONS about any medication, especially antibiotics, your doctor wants to prescribe you. The more antibiotics you take, the more resistant you will be to them when you really need them. We’re not saying ditch your doctor or poo-pooing your pills. Just be informed of ALL the options. And remember, antibiotics do NOT help with VIRAL infections.

Consider a more natural treatment—there are plenty of science-based natural alternatives such as vitamins, herbal solutions, changes in diet, etc.

Thoroughly research the type of drug, especially antibiotic, a physician wants to prescribe you.

CLEAN IT UP! Simple hygiene, hand-washing (soap and water, not anti-bacterial stuff) and wiping down potentially contaminated surfaces can reduce the chance of illness.

hoNeY DoHONEY AS ANTIBIOTIC? Okay, by now you know that lily Mag is obsessed with honey. After all, our mascot is a honey bee. Turns out there’s even more reason to do the lily happy dance because studies show that Honey is a sweet remedy for a variety of wounds. Recent studies reveal a wide variety of treatment qualities found in honey that are almost unparalleled to other forms of treatment. Some awesome results were:Infections were not only cleared, but wounds were protected from spreading bacteria.honey was able to control and eliminate strong odors from wounds.Permanent scarring was dramatically reduced.honey promoted anti-inflammatory activity.

hoNeY For ACNe? We’ve been hearing the buzz about using honey to treat acne. According to Organic Facts network, “acne is caused due to the blockage and subsequent infection of the sebum glands, then clearing the blockage and fighting the infection should logically help cure your acne symptoms. This is where the honey mask for acne comes into play. Using a honey mask for acne not only clears the blockage but also removes the infectious microbes, thus reducing the signs of acne.”There are endless all natural honey mask recipes. Try some & pick your fav, remembering these tips:

don’t use honey topically if you are super-subject to allergies. Test a tiny patch of your skin first, to ensure no reaction.Skin may appear a little redder at first—honey is powerful stuff! Never use adulterated, cheap honey like the kinds you find in big box stores. ORGANIC, pure honey without harmful pollutants is a must. Take into consideration your skin’s natural condition (oily, dry, sensitive)… take your time to experiment slowly and tweak accordingly to your needs. Always rinse vERy GENTLy with warm water —don’t scrub and irritate your skin. don’t expect instant results. most natural remedies take longer to achieve results but have far greater impact with less side effects.

ChArLeStoN’S BotANICAL herItAGeCharleston was known as a garden mecca almost from its outset. Ever wonder about the street called “Orange” downtown? It was an orange grove in the late 1600’s. In the 1700’s, famous botanists from all over the world came to study Charleston’s climate, helping to establish the roots of such local classics as the Azalea and Camellia plants, imported from the far east. And the area known as Noisette in No Chas is named after a horticulturalist and a rather marvelous heirloom rose from the early 1800’s—a bloom that’s still famous and popular in gardening circles. South Carolina Medical Society had a Botanical Garden and no well to do downtown mansion or nearby plantation was without expensive, sophisticated gardens.

Check out the many Garden Tours of area organizations. Visit these gorgeous gardens and discover the power of flowers yourself.

SIMPLe AND SexYWe have asked Justin and Ronnie of Swish on Pitt to help us create a chic, spring ponytail!

1. Start by applying a light weight serum to damp hair. (Justin recommends Davines Oi Beautifying oil.) Apply a couple of drops to the palms of hands and apply to the ends first, then work your way up, staying off the roots.

2. For volume/texture, use a lifting product like Davines Volu hair mist to roots and all over head.

3. Blow dry hair with a medium-sized, round brush, smoothing while leaving a bit of movement. For texture, use a large curling wand in different directions.

4.Spray a generous coat of Davines medium hair spray over your luscious locks.

5. Loosely pull hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic, similar in color to your hair.

6. Once hair is secured, slide down the elastic band (about a 1/4 inch) to loosen the ponytail a bit more. Take a small piece of hair from underneath the pony tail (about 1/4 inch in size), spray it with hair spray and wrap around the elastic band, securing ends with bobby pins, or tuck the ends into the elastic and lightly spray again with hair spray for a super sexy finish.
