In   addition   to   offering   traditional   classes   every  spring   and   fall,   the   Center   is   expanding   its  resources,  thinking  “out  of  the  box”  and  fulfilling  community  requests.

You  can  now  expect  more  continuing  education  classes   than   ever   before.       That’s   right!     More  topically–engaging,   educational,   hands–on,  technical   and   fun   classes   offered   on   and   off  Shenandoah  University’s  main  campus.

If   you   are   looking   for   online   classes   for   the  workplace,   medical   field,   personal   enrichment,  technology,   job   security,   going   green   or  certifications,   we   have   them!   Call   today,   540-‐665-‐5442.

First   time   ever   and…years   in   the   making:     We  now   have   included   classes   through   the   Center  for   Lifelong   Learning   to   coincide   with  Shenandoah   University’s   Conservatory   shows  and   concerts.     This   special   series   called,  “Listener’s   Edge”   will   give   you   insight   into   the  creative  process  behind  these  productions.    First,  take   a   class   with   the   experts,   who   created,  helped   or   produced   these   masterpieces.   They  will   help   you   understand   the   concepts   behind  the  productions.  Then,  attend  an  actual  show  or  concert   to   see   and   hear   these   masterpieces.

2

For   more   information   about   these   concerts,  shows  and  classes,  please  look  on  page  17  -‐18.

Browse  through  our  new  fall  brochure  and  see  all  the   fabulous   classes,   new   partnerships,  certification   opportunities   and   free   lectures   we  have  to  offer.    I  hope  this  will  get  you  excited  to  continue  your  education.    Remember…you  never  stop  learning,  no  matter  your  age.

However  you  have  learned  about  the  Center  for  Lifelong  Learning,  my  hope  is  that  you  will  be  inspired  by  what  is  in  this  brochure,  on  our  Web  site  at  www.su.edu/lifelonglearning  or  in  the  newspaper  and  on  the  radio.

Come  by  for  a  visit  or  call  to  register  for  a  class.    I  am  always   interested   in  what  you  would   like   to  have  us  teach.    Speaking  of  teaching,  if  you  have  a   love   for   a   special   topic,   let   me   know.      See  page  19.

Sincerely,    Jo  Miller,  Coordinator  540-‐665-‐5442

SPECIAL  NOTICE!

The  Ralph  E.  Lewis    Book  Club

The  current  book  club  honors  Ralph  E.  Lewis  by  keeping  reading  alive,  something  he  believed  in  all  his  life.

Maintaining  an  active  schedule  of  reading  throughout  the  year,  The  Ralph  E.  Lewis  Book  Club  is  determined  by  the  membership,  the  readings  selections,  which  include  five  genres,  each  for  a  specific  month.    The  current  five  are:  history,  biography,  author,  literary  fiction  and  non-‐fiction.    The  remaining  six  selections  for  the  year  are  chosen  from  current  topic  interest,  book  reviews,  recommendations  from  other  sources,  or  just  a  good  book  recently  read.

The  club  membership  hovers  around  ten  in  number  and  meets  the  fourth  Tuesday  of  the  month  at  10  a.m.  at  Shenandoah  University’s  Davis  Hall.    The  only  requirement  for  membership  is  a  healthy  appreciation  for  good  and  varied  reads,  as  well  as  comfort  in  an  informal  atmosphere.    Enjoying  a  good  laugh  is  a  plus.    Ralph  Lewis  would  be  pleased!

For  more  information  about  The  Ralph  E.  Lewis  Book  Club,    please  call,  June  Wilmot    540-‐678-‐0278.

Your  instructor,  Amy  Wilson-‐Payne,  is  a  freelance  writer  with  experience  writing  everything  from  poetry  to  speeches  and  short  stories  to  self-‐improvement  books.  She’s  currently  writing  her  first  novel  and  ghostwriting  a  book  for  a  life-‐coach  entrepreneur.

TUE:    9/11/12—10/9/12  Time:    6:30—8:30  p.m.  Course:    CONT  100  CLL1  Cost:  $89          CEUs  1  Main  Campus,  Henkel  Hall,  108            Winchester,  1752-‐2012:    260  Years  of  Myths,  Lies,  Mysteries,  Fun  and  Frolic  from  the  Oldest  English  Settlement  West  of  the  Blue  Ridge!    Winchester  is  billed  as  "the  oldest  English  speaking  town  west  of  the  Blue  Ridge  Mountains"  even  though  most  of  the  earliest  settlers  spoke  German.  And  Winchester  claims  to  have  been  the  training  ground  for  George  Washington  in  war  and  in  politics  but  his  written  assessments  of  locals  were  less  than  flattering.  What  were  the  reasons?

1

Ghostwriters:  Your  Words,    Their  Stories    Do  you  love  to  write?  Do  you  have  a  natural  writing  talent,  but  don’t  quite  know  what  to  do  with  it?  You  should  consider  ghostwriting.    This  is  a  great  fit  for  people  who  love  to  write  but  don’t  want  the  hassle  of  marketing,  publishing,  and  promoting  their  work.    Ghostwriting  can  be  a  highly  lucrative  vocation.  Operating  behind  the  scenes,  ghostwriters  flex  their  creative  muscles  and  explore  topics  they  might  otherwise  never  consider.

If  you’re  interested  in  a  craft  that  encompasses  elements  of  theatricality,  anonymity,  and  creativity,  while  getting  paid  to  do  what  you  love,  this  course  is  the  place  to  start.  Everyone  has  a  story  to  tell  but  not  everyone  knows  how  to  tell  it;  you  can  help.

You  will  learn  the  basics  to  jump-‐start  your  ghostwriting  journey.  You’ll  learn  what  ghostwriting  is,  how  the  process  works,  and  how  to  get  started.    Along  with  learning  about  the  logistics  and  benefits  of  ghostwriting,  you’ll  receive  instruction  on  drafting  effective  contracts  and  how  to  handle  clients.

3

Some  claim  Winchester  changed  hands  72  times  during  the  Civil  War  and  this  brings  many  Civil  War  buffs  to  the  area  to  hear  the  stories  and  see  if  any  battle  scars  remain.  But  are  locals  capitalizing  on  a  myth  and  enhancing  the  tales  for  more  modern  needs  and  interests?    What  are  the  true  facts  about  Winchester  during  these  sad  times  and  are  there  provable  facts  that  show  why  Winchester  can  really  claim  fame  as  a  suffering  victim?  And  why  is  one  of  the  best  Union  generals  still  despised  by  so  many?  Was  he  really  that  bad?    Today,  most  claim  Patsy  Cline  as  Winchester’s  most  famous  person  of  the  20th  century.  But  why  do  many  claim  this  a  contested  legacy?    Mike  Foreman  will  explore  these  stories  and  many  more  in  a  4-‐week  class  on  local  history.  Whether  you  want  to  learn  more  local  history  or  you  want  to  hear  different  views  and  opinions,  it  will  be  fun!

TUE:    9/18/12—10/9/12  Time:  6:30  —8:30  p.m.    Course:    CONT  103  CLL1  Cost:    $79          CEUs      .8    Main  Campus,  Henkel  Hall,  223

Artrageous!

Explore  your  inner  artist    and  get  creative!  Participants  will  complete  four  projects  during  this  five-‐week  course:    two  pottery-‐

painting  projects,  a  glass  project,  and  a  hand-‐built  clay  project.    This  class  is  great  for  all  levels  of  experience  and  all  ages.

You  will  learn  two  different  pottery-‐painting  techniques:  one  using  specialized  rubber  stamps  to  create  unique  pottery  designs  and  one  to  use  paper  shapes  as  templates.    Wait  until  you  see  what  glass  fusing  is  all  about!    It  can  be  addictive  and  the  results  are  impressive!

Shakespeare:  An  Introduction    Lauded  by  many  as  one  of  the  greatest  writers  of  all  time,  William  Shakespeare’s  life  and  tales  still  intrigue  and  inspire  us  today.    Yet  many  are  put-‐off  by  the  seemingly  complex  aspects  of  the  plays’  plots  and  language.      Don’t  let  these  concerns  stop  you  from  embracing  some  of  the  world’s  greatest  literature!    In  this  special  five-‐week  course,  participants  learn  about  William  Shakespeare’s  life,  inspirations,  and  influence.    The  course  includes  a  study  of  his  tragedies,  histories,  and  comedies.    Participants  read  one  play  from  each  of  these  main  categories.    Strategies  for  “translating”  Shakespeare’s  Elizabethan  language  and  tips  for  tracing  the  recurring  themes  of  his  plays  are  key  learning  experiences  of  the  course.

Wine  Tasting  101

ONE  DAY,  ONE  HOUR  ONLY!  Wine  can  be  intimidating  and  confusing;  learning  about  it  can  be  exciting  and  invigorating.  The  ultimate  evaluation  of  any  wine  is  “Do  you  like  it?”      The  mythology  of  wine  may  seem  daunting  when  you  are  handed  a  20-‐page  wine  list  or  standing  in  a  store  with  hundreds  of  labels  from  which  to  choose.  Learn  the  art  of  wine  tasting  basics.      This  one-‐hour  crash  course  will  give  you  just  enough  information  and  a  taste  for  wanting  more.  Advanced  reservations  are  required  and  space  is  limited  to  20  guests.  Participants  must  be  21  years  of  age  to  take  this  class  with  proof  of  age  at  the  first  class  meeting.    WED:  9/5/12  Time:  2-‐3  p.m.    Course:    CONT  418  CLL1  Cost:    $49        CEUs  .2    Veramar  Vineyards,  Berryville

Wine  Tasting  102    Few  things  are  more  intimidating  than  wine  tasting.    You  may  feel  that  you  lack  the  knowledge  and  experience  to  properly  taste  wines.    The  first  thing  that  any  wine  taster  should  do  is  to  relax!

This  is  a  very  personal  experience.    There  are  few  absolutes  in  wine  tasting  and  few  right  or  wrong  answers.    The  ultimate  evaluation  of  any  wine  is  “Do  you  like  it?”    Remember,  wine  tasting  is  supposed  to  be  fun.

This  five-‐week,  one-‐hour  class  is  designed  for  those  seeking  more  advanced  knowledge  about  wine  and  is  a  perfect  complement  to  those  completing  our  Wine  101  course.    We’ll  take  a  more  analytical  perspective  with  each  of  the  wine  varieties,  which  will  lead  to  deeper  discussions  about  wine  in  general.

Advanced  reservations  are  required  and  space  is  limited  to  20  guests.      Participants  must  be  21  years  of  age  to  take  this  class  with  proof  of  age  at  the  first  class  meeting.

Owner,  James  Bogaty,  will  be  teaching  this  special  class  on  the  wines  of  the  valley.

Leadership  and  Shakespeare

Hamlet,  Macbeth,  Othello,  and  King  Lear.    Then  the  real  challenge  and  fun  begins…

Each  of  these  great  tragedies  features  an  impressive  though  flawed  leader.    The  leadership  lessons  of  Shakespeare’s  tragic  heroes  become  the  reference  points  for  course  participants’  reflections  on  their  own  leadership  experiences,  challenges,  and  goals.    After  analyzing  the  tragic  flaws  of  these  tragic  heroes,  participants  will  be  asked  to  consider  what  leadership  situations  in  their  own  lives  have  presented  these  same  flaws  or  problems.

Finally,  you  will  be  asked  to  consider  you  own  “tragic  flaws”  or  leadership  weaknesses  and  to  plan  strategies  for  addressing  these  opportunities  for  improvement.  This  proactive  plan  –The  Ethical  Leadership  Plan  (ELP)  becomes  each  person’s  individualized  roadmap  for  becoming  a  more  grounded  leader  and  for  making  future  management  decisions  with  firm  integrity.

Your  instructor,  Rachael  Hammond,  has  served  as  an  educator  for  over  twenty  years.    Additionally,  she  has  led  conference  management  and  program  direction  efforts  for  non-‐profits  serving  the  cable  and  healthcare  industries.

SATURDAY

1

Sketching  &  Painting  the  Landscape  in  Watercolor

In  this  class  you  will  ease  into  the  art  of  “en  plein  air”  –  a  French  phrase  meaning  simply,  “in  open  air”  -‐  painting.    En  plein  air  is  air.  Artists  have  painted  en  plein  air  for  centuries,  seeing  it  as  a  way  to  sharpen  both  their  observation  and  painting.    In  this  class,  we’ll  focus  on  the  unique  experience  of  painting  “en  plein  air”  –  both  the  pleasures  and  the  challenges.

On  Saturday,  we’ll  spend  most  of  the  day  outdoors,  learning  to  use  our  sketchbooks  as  visual  journals  and  accumulating  a  great  deal  of  material  that  can  be  used  in  future  studio  paintings.    From  there  we’ll  move  on  to  more  ambitious  paintings  of  the  plein  air  landscape.

On  Sunday,  the  focus  will  turn  to  using  the  sketches  from  our  journals  as  the  basis  for  studio  paintings.

Each  day  will  include  a  quick  instructor  demo  or  two,  focused  on  the  considerations  of  painting  on  location,  especially  subject  selection  and  simplification.

Everyone  will  have  plenty  of  time  to  work  at  his/her  own  pace,  with  much  help,  advice,  direction  and  support  from  the  instructor.    We’ll  end  the  days  with  a  relaxed  review  of  the  day’s  work.    In  between,  the  instructor  will  help  to  develop  knowledge  and  skills  in  all  facets  of  watercolor  painting.

Your  instructor,  primarily  self-‐taught,  Tony  Connor’s  artistic  education  has  been  a  process  including  both  formal  instruction  and  meandering  exploration.  A dedicated  watercolorist  for  more  than  twenty  years,  he  nevertheless  works  in  a  variety  of  other  media  –

a  practice  that  both  challenges  and  enhances  creativity  and  artistic  perspective.    He  has  drawn  and  painted  for  all  of  his  life  and  has  always  found  the  act  of  creation  and  making  marks  on  paper  totally  absorbing.

Some  experience  in  watercolors  would  be  helpful.    A  material  list  will  be  given  upon  request  by  emailing  [email protected].

Your  instructor,  Madeline  MacNeil,  Across  the  Atlantic,  has  performed  at  the  O'Carolan  Festival  in  Keadue,  County  Roscommon,  Ireland;  the  Glasgow  Festival  of  the  Arts  in  Scotland;  and  for  the  Non  such  Dulcimer  Gathering  in  East  Norton,  Leicestershire,  England.

Anatomy  of  a  Musical  by:  Thomas  Albert

Did  you  ever  wonder  which  comes  first:  the  music  or  the  lyrics?  Why  do  characters  suddenly  burst  into  song  or  dance?  What’s  going  on  down  there  in  the  orchestra  pit,  and  backstage?  How  does  a  musical  get  produced?  What  makes  a  hit,  or  a  flop?  These  questions,  and  more,  are  answered  in  three  classes  that  focus  on  the  musicals  of  Shenandoah  Conservatory’s  2012-‐2013  theatre  season.

Anatomy  of  a  Musical:  Sweet  Charity      CONT  112  CLL1  Thursday,  September  27,  2012  Location:  TBA.  Time:  3-‐5  pm    Through  Broadway  standards  such  as  “Big  Spender”  and  “If  My  Friends  Could  See  Me  Now,”  we  follow  the  life  and  foibles  of  Charity  Valentine,  eternal  optimist  and  taxi  dancer  in  a  Times  Square  dance  hall.  The  original  1966  production  received  nine  Tony  nominations,  including  best  composer  (Cy  Coleman),  best  lyrics  (Dorothy  Fields),  best-‐leading  actress  (Gwen  Verdon).  Bob  Fosse  won  the  Tony  for  best  choreographer.

Anatomy  of  a  Musical:  The  Spitfire  Grill      CONT  114  CLL1  Thursday,  January  10,  2013  Time:  3-‐5  pm      Location:  Ruebush,  209

Based  on  a  1996  film  of  the  same  name,  The  Spitfire  Grill  tells  the  story  of  how  Percy  Talbott,  just  released  from  prison  and  thrust  into  the  small  town  of  Gilead,  Wisconsin,  finds  a  job,  a  home,  and  a  new  life.  With  book,  music  and  lyrics  by  James  Valcq  &  Fred  Alley,  the  original  2001  Off-‐Broadway  production  won  the  Richard  Rodgers  Production  Award.  Its  tuneful  score,  a  mixture  of  country,  folk  and  traditional  Broadway  ballads,  was  a  critical  and  audience  favorite.  Garrett  (Elise)  Long,  a  1991  alumna  of  Shenandoah  Conservatory,  created  the  role  of  Percy  Talbot,  and  was  nominated  for  the  Drama  Desk  Award  for  Outstanding  Actress  in  a  Musical.

Anatomy  of  a  Musical:  Into  the  Woods      CONT  118  CLL1    Thursday,  February  21,  2013  Time:  3-‐5  pm      Location:  Ruebush,  209

Four  familiar  Grimms’  fairy  tales  (Cinderella,  Jack  and  the  Beanstalk,  Little    Red  Riding  Hood  and  Rapunzel)  are  given  an  irreverent  twist,  and  bound    together  with  an  original  story  about  a  childless  baker  and  his  wife.  The    characters  all  get  what  they  want  at  the  end  of  the  first  act,  but  the  second    act  shows  that  actions  have  consequences,  often  disastrous.  The  1988  show    was  nominated  for  ten  Tonys,  winning  for  best  score  (Stephen  Sondheim),  best  book  (James  Lapine),  and  best  leading  actress  (Joanna  Gleason).

Your  instructor,  Tom  Albert,  holds  the  Charles  B.  Levitin  Chair  in  Musical  Theatre  at  Shenandoah  Conservatory,  where  he  has  been  a  member  of  the  faculty  since  1974.  He  currently  teaches  courses  in  the  history  of  American  musical  theatre  and  acting  through  song.  He  has  served  as  music  director  and  conductor  for  more  than  120  musicals  for  the  Conservatory  and  Shenandoah  Summer  Music  Theatre,  most  recently  for  The  Boy  Friend,  Assassins,  The  Who's  Tommy,  9  to  5,  and  Grease.  He  has  also  composed  incidental  music  for  several  Conservatory  productions,  including  last  year's  Peer  Gynt  and  Metamorphoses.

This  is  a  wonderful  first-‐time  collaboration  between  the  Center  for  Lifelong  Learning  and  Shenandoah  University’s  Conservatory.  Through  these  courses  we  are  offering  community  classes  full  of  inside  information  regarding  pre-‐show  preparations.  You  will  be  the  person  with  “The  Listener’s  Edge.”
