y Recreation is a leisure-time activity .
y Defined as refreshment, diversion, or as "the less serious and
more passive types of playful activity,
y Person engages in it because he desires and chooses to do so,
without compulsion of any type other than an urge from
within.

Health promotiony Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase
control over, and to improve their health.(Reference: Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion. WHO, Geneva,1986)
HEALTH PROMOTION IS CARRIED OUT BY PEOPLE, AND WITH PEOPLE, NOT ON OR TOPEOPLE
Ottawa charter landmark decision in Health promotion.
The Ottawa Charter identifies three basic strategies forhealth promotion. These are-

Mental Health Promotion
y Mental and behavioural disorders(expressed in disability
adjusted life years, or DALYS) represented 11% of the total
disease burden in 1990, and this is expected to rise to 15%
by 2020 (WHO, 2001c)
y Depression was the fourth largest contributor to the disease
burden in 1990
y Positive mental health is a strong protective factor against
mental disorders.

Conclusion ..
y With the change in the Global epidemiological profile and
increase in the disease burden in the world due to Non
communicable disease including mental illness the role of
Health promotion with due emphasis on Recreation activities
will be instrumental in achieving the targets of having Global
Holistic Health. Also in Indian context the need for
recreational activities not only for adults but also for school
children to address the emerging problem of Mental illness
and Suicidal trends in School Children is more than ever.
