Hello to all Brighter Days Festival supporters,Well another crazy year has passed since our last festival which I’m sure you all agree was a huge success and now the 2017 Brighter Days Festival is here again. We can guarantee if you liked last years Brighter Days Festival you’re gonna love this years.

Our amazing Brighter Days Festival committee have worked their butts off all year and put together 3 days of family fun and memories you can share with friends for a very long time. Our Brighter Days Festival is focused on a family event that also reflects our passion to raise money and more importantly awareness for our two worthy charities SUDC and DeBRa Australia

Over the 4 years since we started this Foundation, we haven’t had anyone leave, we’ve only had more people offer their support which is testament to the rewarding feeling we all get from helping people!! In the program you can read about our incredible achievements so far but this year you’ll see what we’ve done and where your generous donations have gone via video presentations on the big screens. And you can say Hi to the representatives of our two charities who along with their families & friends will be here all weekend enjoying the event.

Having all of you amazing Brighter Days Festival supporters help promote this event via good old word of mouth means this year promises to be even bigger than 2016 so this year we have had to make some changes. The Festival precinct of Howitt Park will be temporarily fenced with three entrances to the park for us to monitor patron numbers and sell our #raiseyourwristBDF17 wristbands. These I SUPPORT BRIGHTER

DAYS wristbands are $10 each for adults and $5 for kids and we are going for a raise your wrist record on Sunday night. We encourage everyone to buy a wristband - it equates to less than $1 for every musical act over the weekend! We are also raffling two Harley-Davidsons and a Kincrome Tool Kit, so get in early and get your tickets. These are our main fundraising initiatives so we do need your support! Remember this is still a FREE CHARITY EVENT, so please let’s remind ourselves why we are all here…to raise money for children and families and give them a Brighter Day.

EB sufferers Eliza and Tilly.

The Brighter Days Foundation was formed in 2012 to offer support to two charities; the DEBRA Foundation (Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Association) and SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood). Through a friend, whose child had been diagnosed with the debilitating EB disease, the band the Smokin’ O’Briens played a backyard EB awareness gig where they met sufferers Eliza and Tilly. So touched by the plight of these children, musicians Matt Powell, John Nixon and Steve Dundon decided to do something more to help. At the same time their bike-riding buddy Jim Henwood’s close friends Rob and Kylie Trewin had lost their son Cooper to SUDC whilst another great mate and Bright local Jason Reid was experiencing first hand the trauma of a very sick child.

Collectively the guys wanted to do something that would make a real difference to those suffering. They put their heads together and drew on the significant resources of their wider circle of friends who were also motorcycle and car enthusiasts and so the Brighter Days Foundation began. Now in its fifth year, the committee and some very passionate volunteers have managed to raise more than $950,000 through donations, raffles, auctions and events.

HOW ITBEGAN

The Cooper Trewin Memorial SUDC Research Fund was established after the tragic passing of Cooper Trewin on 6 February 2010 aged 16 months and is supporting SIDS and Kids to fund advocacy and Australian research into the cause for sudden and unexplained death in children. “Sudden Unexplained Death In Childhood (SUDC) is the sudden and unexpected death of a child over the age of 12 months, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted.” (Krous et al. 2005)

Money raised from Brighter Days has assisted in the development of the Cooper Trewin Brighter Days Neuroimaging Study which is being conducted over the next two years at the Boston Children’s Hospital by Dr Hannah Kinney. The study aims to develop a biomarker of subtle hippocampal maldevelopment in asymptomatic toddlers at risk for sudden unexpected death with novel state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques. www.sudc.org.au

COOPER TREWIN MEMORIAL SUDC RESEARCH FUND

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a rare disease whereby the skin blisters and peels at the slightest touch. Living with EB is likened to living with 3rd degree burns and is known as the “worst disease you’ve never heard of.” It is extremely painful, and sufferers must be bandaged with daily dressings which take 2-3 hours to protect and medicate their wounds. Children and Adults are effected in many different ways ranging from mild, moderate to the severest form which often results in premature death. It is estimated that approx. 1,000 people in Australia are effected by EB and occurs in all racial and ethnic groups. It effects males & females equally. Although EB is not always evident at birth, severe cases usually are. Milder EB cases become apparent when a child crawls, walks, runs or become more physically active.

Money raised from Brighter Days has assisted individuals and families all over Australia living with EB. It has provided them with many items including wheel chairs, ramps, specially made clothing, shoes, air conditioners, medical equipment and supplies. Brighter Days has also contributed to the EB Nurse Program which employs dedicated part-time EB nurses in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The decep-tion worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly three decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop.

A self explanatory single to reflect their success, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, rose through the charts and ahead lay a very lengthy pub crawl which only the accomplished could survive. MENTAL AS ANYTHING (Reg Mombassa, Greedy Smith, Martin Plaza, Wayne ‘Bird’ Delisle and Peter O’Doherty).

Joe Camilleri, writer of milestone Australian songs such as So Young, Hit and Run, Shape I’m In, Hold On To Me, Harley and Rose, Chained to the Wheel and Never Let Me Go, has given his life to making music in this country. Leader of one of Australia’s most successful bands, The Black Sorrows.

The Black Sorrows have earned the reputation as a dynamic live act. At the helm, Camilleri steers the band through an energetic interplay of blues, soul, R&B, gospel, country and even Brill Building pop. The latest incarnation of The Black Sorrows is – Claude Carranza (guitar/vocals), Mark Gray (bass/vocals), John McAll (keyboards/vocals) and Angus Burchall (drums).

CHOCOLATE STARFISHStarfish burst on to the charts in 1993 with their classic cover of Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain. A string of hits followed, including Mountain, Four Letter Word and Accidentally Cool. Singer Adam Thompson, an entertaining frontman, lends the music an air of much-needed theatricality and melodrama. If there’s an audience, he’ll play up to them, if there’s a balcony, he’ll climb it, if there’s energy in the room, he’ll milk it. Currently touring with their Bat Out Of Hell Show. Capturing the spirit of the legendary Eagles live on stage, the Screamin’ Eagles line-up in-cludes six vocalists, three guitars, bass, drums and keyboards. (See festival map above) Patrons from the surrounding areas are encouraged to use the bus service on offer. There is no public CAR access or parking within the Festival Precinct at all over the weekend. (Motorbikes, Stall holders and Artists excepted). There is a dedicated Cooper Card Run parking and departure point for all participating cars located in the Rotary Slide Car Park. (See festival map above)
