to deliver ground breaking performance
• Robust simple design ensures low maintenance
Benefits
• Simple, reliable, easy to maintain
• 25% of media required compared to sand
• Media life of 15 years and beyond
• 20% footprint of rapid sand filters
• Low operating costs
Benefits…continued….
• Filtration velocity up to 60m3 /m2hr
• Chemical free
• Low backwash water consumption, 1/10 to 1/100 of competingtechnologies.
– 0.1 to 1% at 50m3/m2hr
• High solid loading capability
– Up to 500mg/l inlet

• Waste Water Smart Red: Waste Water System (WWS)
• Industrial Smart Green: Process Water System (PWS)
Smart Blue: Clean Water System
• Applications:
o Inlet Water: algae removal, Turbidity reduction,
o Pre-treatment: For RO, UV for solids removal and optimization
o RGF: Increase in throughput and/or performance
o Fe and Mn reduction,
o Cryptosporidium reduction??
• Performance:
o Turbidity removal 80-98%
o SDI removals down to <3, RO cleaning frequency quartered
o Increase throughput up to 5 times in an existing RGF
o Up to 75% and 98% removal of Fe and Mn with no other treatments
Smart Filter Blue:Clean Water System
Example: Loch Ascog
• High algae breaking through slow sand filters, high Fe and Mn
Solution
• 2m diameter Smart 170 filter installed for primary treatment.• Efficiency of the slow sand filters (+GAC) resolved.
• Results:
• Turbidity 86%• Manganese 98%• Iron 80%• Aluminium 68%

Smart Filter Yellow: Desalination Pre-Treat System
Applications:
Pre-treatment as a lower cost, higher performance alternative to sand/dual media
Performance:
Turbidity/suspended solids reduction
to give SDI<3
Reduce frequency of chemical cleanings by
75%.
Example: KAUST
A cost effective chemical free 115MLD SWRO pre-treatment system was required for KingAbdullahs University of Science and Technology in KSA.
• Initial design for dual media of 16 filters reduced to 4 for Smart Media (Identical size)
• SDI <3 from Inlet waters with turbidity >10 NTU
• 15 year media life
• No chemical coagulants or flocculants required
• Conclusion:
• >50% Capex cost savings
• >66% Opex cost savings
• Vastly reduced environmental impact
Smart Filter Yellow: Desalination Pre-Treat System
Smart Filter Red:Waste Water System
• Applications:
o Secondary: (Inlet loadings of up to 500mg/ltr) for suspended solids and BODreduction/removal.
o Tertiary Polishing for suspended solids and BOD reduction/removal.
o Pre-Filtration for UV to meet bathing water directive consent.
o Replacement or retrofit of sand filters to hit new consent limits.
• Performance:
o Reduction Suspended Solids >85%,
o Reduction BOD >65%,
o Reduction COD >55%
o Increased UV kill
Example: Luss
• Large fluctuation on loading during the peak holiday periods causing UV disinfection to fail tomeet the bathing water directive on a number of occasions.
• 1.1m diameter Smart 45 installed post-SAF, pre-UV
• Flow of 14 l/s through the filter then through the UV disinfection system.•
Results
• Overall SS reduction 70%
• Overall BOD reduction 54%
• After UV E Coli/ coliform reduction 100%
No further failures
SMART FILTER Red: Waste Water System
KILMELFORD WWTP: Tertiary Polishing
Example Kilmelford
•Final solids consent from Septic tank not beingmet
• Final BOD consent not being met
• £2million pound plant mothballed
Solution:
•Install Duty/Standby Smart 15, post septic tank
Results:
• 88% reduction of Suspended Solids
• 76% reduction of BOD
•Consent obtained
•Plant fully re-commissioned
Conclusion:
•Massive Capex savings & within dischargeconsent
Smart Filter Red: Waste Water System
Smart Filter Green:Process Water System
• Applications:
o Waste Water:
Reduce effluent charges by reducing COD and suspended solids (Food, metals etc), clean up waste water for re-use
o Cooling Towers:
Reduce Legionella risk and improve efficiency by reducing solids.
o Process Water:
Reduce solids and reduce downtime (Blocked nozzles etc), improve heattransfer.
o Inlet Water:
Enable use of natural water sources not previously used for process (Boreholes, lakes, rivers etc)
Example: MARS
Mars (pet foods) in Melton Mowbray required a full stream filtration system for their new 2cooling tower installations to remove suspended solids and ensure product spills did not enterthe system and cause legionella issues.
Footprint was also an issue with the system being installed into an area with very little space.
A triplex system with 3X1.5m diameter filters was designed and installed with 1 filter able to takethe maximum flow of 70m3/hr per system and the 3rd filter acting as the standby for both of the 2systems.
The filters capacity to filter <1 micron has given more than the performance required to filter outany suspended solids and ensure the system stays clean.
