    Plug-In Descriptions

55MM is a unique set of plug-ins from Digital Film Tools meant to simulate

popular glass camera filters, specialized lenses and optical lab processes.

Instead of fumbling around with glass filters when shooting, you can now

precisely treat your images in a controlled digital environment with high quality

    16 bit processing.

Black & WhiteBlack and White converts color images to black and white simulating the lookof Black and White photographic filters.

Bleach BypassBleach Bypass is a film laboratory technique where, by skipping the bleach

stage in the color processing sequence, silver is retained in the image along

with the color dyes. The result is effectively a black and white image

superimposed on a color image. Bleach Bypass images have increased

contrast, reduced saturation, often giving a pastel effect.

Color GradThe Color Grad tints only a portion of the image with a selected color in either

HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) or HLS (Hue, Luminance, Saturation) mode. There is a graduated transition for a smooth color blend between the tinted

color and the original image. The Color Grad is especially good for tinting the

    color of the sky.

DefocusDefocus replicates a true camera defocus by blooming highlights as the image

    is blurred.

Dual TintDual Tint applies two tints to the image that are blended together with an

    adjustable gradient.

Faux FilmThe Faux Film filter gives video the look of film. It reduces contrast, creates a

soft glow around highlights and adds film grain.

    4 Plug-In Descriptions

FluorescentThe fluorescent filter removes the greenish tone caused by photographing

    under fluorescent lights.

FogThe Fog filter creates none other than fog. The effect creates a soft, misty

    atmosphere over the image.

GlowThe Glow filter creates glows around selected areas of the image.

Infra-RedThe Infra-Red filter simulates the effect of infra-red photography by making the

image black and white and blooming highlights.

Low ContrastLow Contrast spreads highlights into darker areas, lowers contrast and keeps

    bright areas bright.

MistThe Mist filter creates atmosphere by reducing contrast while creating a glow

    around highlights.

ND GradThe ND or Neutral Density Grad darkens only a portion of the image using a

graduated transition between the darkened portion and the original image. It

selectively adjust brightness without affecting color balance. The most likely

use for the ND Grad would be to balance the difference between the sky and

    the ground.

Night VisionThe Night Vision filter creates the effect of a Night Vision lens--that green,

    glowy, grainy look.

PolarizerThe greatest use of polarizing filters is to achieve a darkened, deep blue sky.

Our digital version of the Polarizer is designed to do just that. Through the use

of a generated matte and an adjustable gradient, the color of the sky can be

    adjusted.

Selective Soft FocusSelective areas of Soft Focus can be added into a scene by isolating a portion

of the image with the built-in matte generator.

Skin SmootherSkin smoother softens wrinkles and blemishes while retaining edge detail.

StarStar patterns are created on highlights defined by a generated matte.

TintTints the entire image with a selected color in either HSV (Hue, Saturation,

Value) or HLS (Hue, Luminance, Saturation) mode. HLS mode retains

    highlights.

Warm/CoolWarm/Cool adjusts the color temperature of the scene to be either warmer or

    cooler.

    6 About this Guide

    About this Guide

This User Guide is a reference for the 55MM plug-ins made for After Effects,

After Effects plug-in compatible programs and Avid Editing Systems. Hopefully,

it will make this already easy to use software easier. At the end of most plug-

ins, there is a short "how to" that explains how to use it. You can read from start

to finish or just jump around as you please. It doesnt matter. However, it is best

to view this user guide in Adobe Acrobat as hyperlinks have been setup

between different parts of the guide. Yes, you can always print the guide if you

cant stand reading off the computer screen.

This guide utilizes the following symbols and conventions:

Navigation1 Navigation Pane: In the Bookmark sections of Acrobats Navigation Pane, you can click

on one of the sections and go directly to that section.2 Blue Text: If you place your cursor over any text that is highlighted blue, it will turn into

a hand. Click on the blue, hyperlinked text and it will navigate you to that portion of the

    manual.

3 Go Back: After clicking blue, hyperlinked text, you can return to your previous locationby right-clicking on the screen and selecting Go To Previous View. If you dont have a

right mouse button, select Go Back from the Document pull-down menu.

NotesSet off by this symbol, notes and helpful hints are found here.

WarningSet off by this symbol, a warning is explained about a particular condition or

    feature.

    16 General Controls

    Matte

In some of the 55MM plug-ins, a matte is generated to create the desired effect.

The matte controls consist of Position, Range and Blur parameters, and they

work the same in all of the plug-ins. The white areas of the matte are the areas

that will be affected by the plug-in, while the black areas remain unaffected. The

Matte is extracted based on luminance and is created using the Position and

    Range parameters.

    PositionSlider, Default 90, Range 0-100

Selects the values to be included in the matte. A higher Position value shows

more white values from the original image as white values in the matte. A lower

Position value shows more black values from the original image as white values

    in the matte.

luminance "Position", you can then add or subtract the "Range" of values to beincluded in the matte. A higher Range value includes more values in the matte.

    BlurSlider, Default:0, Range: 0-200

The matte is blurred by a fast, quality blur.

    Force 16-bit ProcessingCheckbox, Default: 0ff

Turns 16 bit processing on or off.

A Force 16-bit processing function allows you to process in 16 bit even if your

1 Change your View to Matte to see the matte values.

As with some of the other55MM filters, a matte is utilized to create the effect--

in this case, the polarization. A matte is generated based on the blue values in

the sky. Skies vary in their color of blue, so you can adjust the matte to

accommodate your sky. The blue that is used to create the matte can be

modified by using Matte:Position to select the exact blue value and

Matte:Range to select the amount of blue values to be used for the matte.

2 Change the Matte:Position parameter if you want to select different blue valuesto be used for the matte.

3 Increase the Matte:Range value to add more polarization into the scene.Decrease for less polarization.

4 Increase the Matte:Blur parameter to soften the transition areas of thepolarization.

Remember, the areas that are white in the matte are the areas that will be

is achieved by softening the image based on a matte with areas of detail being

retained by using an additional edge matte. The first step is to adjust the mainmatte.

1 Change your View to Matte to see the matte values.

The idea here is to generate a matte that isolates the face of the person whose

skin needs to be smoothed. The white areas of the matte are the areas that will

be smoothed. Dont worry if some areas other than the face are also white in

the matte, because we will introduce detail back into the scene in a moment.

The matte has been preset to a midtone matte. This can be modified by using

Matte:Position to select the luminance value and Matte:Range to select the

amount of values to be used for the matte.

2 If needed, change the Matte:Position parameter so that the face you are trying to

smooth is as white as possible in the matte.3 Adjust the Matte:Range value so that the white values of the matte are limited as

much as possible to the persons face.

4 Increase the Matte:Blur parameter if you want to soften the transition areas of thesoft focus.

5 Change your View to Edge to see the edge matte values.

The areas that are white in the edge matte is where detail in the image is

    retained.

6 Adjust the Edge: Brightness of the edge matte to make sure that you have

sufficient levels of white in areas such as the persons eyes, nose and mouth.

7 Set the Edge: Blur to smooth out the edge matte.

8 Change your View to Output to see the filtered image.

9 Adjust the Horizontal and Vertical Blur to smooth out any blemishes or wrinkles.

10 If the person is looking too soft, increase the Edge:Brightness, decrease theamount of Blur added to the scene or modify the Matte:Position and Range

    parameters.
