FILMING AND EDITING

FILMINGWe first filmed one of the last scenes, the one in which Katherine (Han-sun) approaches Michael after the six month period, signifying the time that she became addicted.

We had two cameras, and experimentedthe scene in several different angles to see which would be the most effective.

As this was our first time shooting, we didn’t try anything challenging – unlike later, after we learned the basics of filming, that we tried some things different. For example, the handheld running scene at the end was after we had several experimentations with filming.

Some issues filming outside were the sound; the background noises were too loud or didn’t fit too well with the scene, although we worked around this by including voice overs in our scenes.

Some of the scenes that we filmed inside were difficult, this is because the lighting sometimes interfered with our filming. Furthermore, the same problem with filming outside interfered our filming, because we were filming during school time and the microphone picked up noise from other classrooms.

EDITING

To edit our scenes, we used Final Cut Pro. First, after filming our scenes, we cut the scenes and put them together in the right order. We worked on tightening the scenes together, and adding transitions in between. For several of the scenes, we had to edit non-diegetic sounds as they either had background music or a voice-over.

Having got the basic structure and sound, we then used Final Cut to edit the footage. We started to try some more experimental ways of getting our meaning across. One way we did this was in the beginning, we had the idea of having silent footage interspersed with audio in the text scenes, we thought that would be a powerful and intriguing start to our film. We also experimented with the colour palette; at the beginning, to add to the effective start, we used a black and white palette.

Furthermore, we experimented the ending and wanted an effective scene, so we thought that the running scene would create an impact if we included the unsettling noise of the wind, so we carried this noise throughout the scene until it zoomed out. Last of all, we edited the last scene to create a poignant ending by editing the scene into slow motion, along with the song ‘We’re All a Bit Scared’ that plays through the credits.
