Film Survey Analysis

Here are the results from the survey we conducted and sent out to the public in order to find out as much as possible about the public’s favourite horror films, what they liked in a

horror film and what entices them to watch a film.

Question 1: Do you like Horror films with a paranormal theme?

Answers:

4 people (44.4%) – Yes

4 people (44.44%) – Kind of

1 person (11.11%) - No

The first question we asked the public was a generic question, if they liked horror films with a paranormal theme? We ask this to find out if they would like a trailer that included a paranormal theme included, as that is what we intend to include. From this question we can see that only 1 person voted no, whereas 4 people said yes and 4 people said ‘kind of’. These results show us that the majority of people can enjoy a paranormal horror film, which is great as our final major project is a paranormal horror film trailer, so this shows us we should go ahead with our original plan/idea.

Question 2: What is your favourite Horror film?

Answers:

The Exorcist, Rec 2, The Pact, Scream, Saw, Annabelle, Rec, Insidious

For our second question we asked what their favourite horror film was so we got an overall idea on what to base our trailer on. The answers we got were The Exocist, Rec 2, The Pact, Sceam, Saw, Annabelle, Rec and Insidious. Five of these answers all have a paranormal theme so our decision to do a horror film trailer is good because it fits with their favourite horror films by being paranormal.

Question 3: Out of the following options, which Horror film do you prefer?

Answers:

Paranormal Activity - 1 person (11.11%)

Insidious – 1 person (11.11%)

Rec – 6 people (66.67%)

Mama – 1 person (11.11%)

Conjuring, Sinister, Exorcism, Ouija and Unborn all got no votes.

For our third question we asked out of the options we provided what horror film they preferred, Conjuring, Sinister, Exorcism, Ouija and Unborn all had no votes. The most popular answer was Rec, which does definitely have a paranormal theme, followed by Paranormal Activity, Mama and Insidious with the same amount of votes. All the films the audience chose all have a paranormal theme and again makes our decision to do a horror film trailer good as it will prove popular with the audience.

Question 4: Which elements of the Horror genre do you enjoy? (Multiple choice)

Answers:

Jump Scares – 4 votes (44.44%)

Plot twist – 4 votes (44.44%)

Well thought through story line– 5 votes (55.56%)

Violence – 2 votes (22.22%)

Slasher – 0 votes (0%)

Psychological thriller – 5 votes (55.56%)

Cliff hangers – 0 votes (0%)

Occult – 1 vote (11.11%)

Exorcisms – 1 vote (11.11%)

Demonic entity – 2 votes (22.22%)

For question 4 we asked what elements of the horror genre they enjoy, this was a multiple choice question and we gave them several options to choose from. A well thought through story line and psychological thriller were the most popular choices both with 5 votes. Followed by jump scares and plot twists both with 4 votes. Violence and demonic entity both had 2 votes, the occult and exorcisms both only had 1 vote, then finally slashers and cliff hangers both had no votes. We asked this question to find out and have guidance on what elements we should include in our trailer that would make it more popular. From these results we can see that we should definitely include plot twists, jump scares, psychological thriller elements and show a well thought through storyline in our trailer. hangers and slashers all had no votes, we know not to include these in our trailer as the majority of people don’t enjoy them.

Question 5: What entices you the most to watch a film?

Answers:

Posters – 0 people (0%)

Billboards – 1 person (11.11%)

Trailer – 8 people (88.89%)

Word of mouth – 0 people (0%)

The fifth and final question we asked was what entices them the most to watch a film, a vast majority of people chose the trailer then followed by billboards. This again is more proof that doing a trailer will prove popular, because that is how most of the audience is enticed to watch a film.
