Mise-en-scene is the way in which a shot has been composed, or put together.  It involves:

Lighting is the skilled use of natural and artificial lighting in order to create certain effects:

Top: Shows subject as angelic, innocent, good

Side: Shows contrast between lit and unlit sides; often portrays subject as untrustworthy

Bottom: Conveys the sinister nature of the subject

Front: Portrays subject in the most common way

Back: The subject is silhouetted for a sinister and threatening

Experiment with lighting effects using a lamp. Take photos on your cellphone demonstrating each effect.
