OUR CITY

A film-friendly city

From stunning historic ships to luxurious yachts and storm-battered beaches to idyllic gardens; Portsmouth’s unique cultural, historical and geographical features have provided the perfect backdrop to a host of productions.

It goes without saying that our Naval heritage features strongly in the city, but in this brochure you’ll also discover period buildings, striking architecture, sprawling parks and atmospheric industrial estates; not forgetting our own seaside resort of Southsea with its four miles of seafront promenade, stunning gardens, fortifications and piers.

Portsmouth City Council is perfectly situated to support your production. We can provide detailed information and access to locations, facilitate effective communication with relevant parties and ensure all the necessary documentation is in place for your production to run smoothly. WATERFRONT CITY

4 5 6

Port Solent

Port Solent 4 is the country’s third largest marina and has a stylish Mediterranean atmosphere. Cafés, bars and restaurants make the most of the waterside setting with terraces and balconies

Gunwharf Quays

Gunwharf Quays 5 is a multi-million pound waterfront development created as part of the Renaissance of Portsmouth Harbour. It offers designer outlet shopping, stylish bars, restaurants and a marina.

Spice Island

The area of Old Portsmouth known as Spice Island is where spices and foreign goods entered the city. Literally outside of the law once the city gates were closed, it was infamous for its pubs and other establishments. The area still features many historical buildings and original fortifications, but now offers family pubs, sea views and the Camber Dock 6 fish market.

“Portsmouth offers a host of unique commercial, residential and industrial waterfront settings.”

Gardens

There are outstanding horticultural displays along the whole of Southsea Common and the seafront, varying from award winning bedding displays at The Dell, Burgoyne Gardens and Southsea Rose Garden 9 to the varied sheltered planting at the Rock Gardens.

HISTORIC CITY

10 11 12

D-Day Museum

The D-Day Museum 10 features extensive displays of personal memorabilia, maps, uniforms, vehicles and other historic artefacts. Full size dioramas include the map room at the Allied headquarters at Southwick House, and a Horsa glider that has landed in Normandy. A real LCVP landing craft is on display, as is a rare Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle (BARV) tank.

Hilsea Lines

The Hilsea Lines 11 12 are a line of 18th and 19th century fortifications built to protect the Northern approach to Portsea. Today the lines are accessible for most of their length and home one of the most varied wildlife havens in Portsmouth, containing woodland, hedgerows, meadows, both fresh and brackish water areas, marshland and coastal habitats.

“Portsmouth is a city steeped in history.”

HISTORIC CITY

Southsea Castle

13 14 15

Towers

The Square Tower, first built in 1494, features original Tudor windows and fireplaces. The Round Tower 15 was completed in the 1420’s and has a Napoleonic interior, gun platforms and roof terrace.

ARCHITECTURAL CITY

16 17 18

Spinnaker Tower

Perhaps the most striking example of architecture in Portsmouth, the iconic Spinnaker Tower 16 is the centre piece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour. At 170m, it is the UK’s tallest accessible tower outside of London and offers panoramic views stretching for up to 23 miles in any direction.

Portsmouth Guildhall

The impressive Portsmouth Guildhall 17 is the city’s civic pride and its imposing architecture dominates the city centre. Inside, decorative council chambers and conference rooms can be found, along with the city’s largest concert hall.

Civic Offices The Civic Offices 18 were built as part of “The New City Centre”, Lord Esher’s plan for the redevelopment of the Guildhall area. The towering glass structure reflects the image of the Guildhall and creates the feeling of an amphitheatre within Guildhall Square.

ARCHITECTURAL CITY

Central Library

City Museum

Portsmouth City Museum & Records Office 20 is housed in an impressive late nineteenth century former barracks building set in a garden. It houses galleries devoted to pictures, fine and decorative art, local history including period room settings and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Register Office

Portsmouth Register Office is situated in Milldam House 21 ; a Grade II listed Georgian building. Built in the early 1800s, it has won awards for renovation work carried out in 1994. The main entrance to the building is dominated by the original wrought iron staircase. Along with its beautifully landscaped garden, this makes Milldam House a perfect setting for wedding photography.

ARCHITECTURAL CITY

22 23 24

Classic terraces

Cathedrals

Portsmouth boasts two wonderful cathedrals. The Anglican St Thomas’s Cathedral 23 features light stone, huge arches, spacious nave and towering bronze doors. The Catholic St John’s Cathedral, in contrast, is a beautiful example of 19th century French Gothic styling.

Victorian industry

Eastney Beam Engine House 24 is an impressive Victorian building containing a pair of classic Boulton Watt beam engines and pumps restored to their original 1887 condition.

CULTURAL CITY

25 26 27

Theatres

Portsmouth has two magnificent theatres, both designed by prolific architect Frank Matcham – The Kings Theatre (1907) 25 and the New Theatre Royal (1884) 26 . In 1974, director Ken Russell filmed the Pinball Wizard sequence of the rock opera Tommy at the King’s Theatre, featuring The Who and Elton John on the stage.

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was born at 1 Mile End Terrace 27 on 7th February 1812 – the first married home of his parents, John and Elizabeth Dickens. Here you can experience the authentic atmosphere of the comfortable Regency home which would have greeted the new-born Dickens. There are three furnished rooms: the parlour, the dining room and the bedroom where Charles was born.

“A city alive with cultural locations and events.”

Its new passenger terminal offers the modern high standards and style of an airport terminal. A full-height concourse contains check-in desks 29 and the arrival/departure area. On a mezzanine floor is the bar/café, with views over the concourse and an observation balcony overlooking the Port 30 .
