An anthem is a stirring song that, when played, reminds lis-teners about their country. So it is for Americans when wehear “The Star-Spangled Banner.” However, “The Star-Spangled Banner” hasn't always been our national anthem;it was just one of several that competed for the right to beso named.

Francis Scott Key wrote the words to “The Star-SpangledBanner,” as he watched the British bomb Ft. McHenry dur-ing the War of 1812. The poem testified that our flag stillflew after the attack. After its printing in the newspaper, people began singing it to the tune of the British song,“Anacreon in Heaven.”Before “The Star-Spangled Banner”was officially declared our national anthem in 1931 by anact of Congress, the song “America” was played at allevents to represent our country. In the early days of thecolonies, “Yankee Doodle” was most often heard. Eventhough “The Star-Spangled Banner” is our official nationalanthem, other anthems, such as “America the Beautiful,”“God Bless America,” and “America” are sometimes playedand sung.

This program offers children a look at the importance ofanthems as patriotic expressions. Children will learn theorigins and lyrics of these beautiful songs while enjoyingthe music and interesting historic backgrounds of thesesymbolic anthems, making for a cadence-marked lesson inearly American history.

Program ObjectivesAfter viewing the program, children should understand:

• what anthems are and why we sing and play them• the historical backgrounds behind the anthems
