available (£100,000) Main priority is to support new film

makers Applications can be made at any

Disadvantages: only fund applications with a

screenwriter attached Have to pay certain contributions to

aspects of the company. Want a share of the profit. Want a say with the final cut.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is a charitable organisation whose main aim is to encourage the development of film and television throughout the United Kingdom

Overall Suitability: For first time film makers the BFI is suitable for funding small productions as they are able to give quite a bit of money and the new film makers are their main priority. Compared to other sources of finance the repayment is easier.

Advantages: £50,000 - £200,000 available to

fund Pay up to 50% of the budget Looking for films in the region so

local film makers have a better chance of funding.

Disadvantages: Have to have all documents ready for

finance Only fund production Need a finance plan All persons have to be paid minimum

The Creative England Production Fund is targeted at feature films with budgets of up to £2 million. They are mainly interested in projects from regional-based filmmakers.

Overall Suitability: Creative England is suitable for local film makers as they are mainly interested in regional projects. They can supply quite a suitable amount for first time film makers, however all persons have to be paid so this could effect the budget. People also have to fund the rest of the process as Creative England only fund production.

Advantages: Only collect a 5% fee from funding

for projects. Crowd funding All or nothing funding – if you

don’t get the amount you don’t get anything so you aren’t left with a fraction – it makes people more likely to pledge.

Disadvantages: Certain chance that the funding

target will not be reached so funding is not definite

All or nothing funding – if you don’t get the amount you don’t get anything.

In competition with more experienced film makers

Kick-starter is an organisation of crowd funding. Millions of people help spread the word of your production and can apply funding by donations. It is used for many creative products.

Overall Suitability: For first time filmmakers Kick-starter is incredibly suitable. It is funded by your fans, family and friends as well as other people interested in your products. They only collect a small amount from funding and their all or nothing policy encourages pledgers. However there is a chance you will not get your target and then you won’t be funded.

Advantages: Fund anyone who has anything to

do with the production of filming projects

Provide necessities if needed to help everyday life as well as work life.

Disadvantages: Have to have less than £10,000 in

savings Must have approached their local

authority for help from their Social Funds.

The Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF) provides financial help for those involved in cinema, film and television projects who are having issues due to: ill health, redundancy or other situations.

Overall Suitability: For certain people this charity would not be suitable to fund their films as it is only available for those who are having financial difficulties and issues at home. So it would not be suitable for those who are after extra finance for their projects.

Advantages: A large sum of money could be

won By entering the competition and

people seeing your proposal could give you wider publicity and a wider audience.

Immediate payment

Disadvantages: Large chance that you could fail to

win so you wouldn’t be funded. No-one to advise you how to use the

money wisely to have the best outcome with your funding.

In competition with more experienced and popular film makers

There are many competitions that people can enter to win funds for their creative projects.

Overall Suitability: This is a less suitable form of financing your film as there is a very slim chance of actually winning the funds and even if you do win then you won’t have an advisors to help use the money effectively so it benefits the production process.

Page 7: Film funding research

Advantages: Don’t declare rights for films Don’t get involved with the

creation so the maker has full control over their project.

Quick and easy.

Disadvantages: You have to pay interest with your

repayments Have to have certain documents May not get the funds you want if you

don’t get permission.

Overall Suitability: There is a very slim chance of getting the right amount of funding you need. Also if your project is unsuccessful you are left in debt as the bank is likely to demand interest with the repaying and it could lead to you paying more than you thought for your project as well as other costs..

Bank loans are one of the easiest ways to get finance for businesses and ideas, however there is the repaying problems as they declare interest.

If I were to create a film with a large budget I would probably use a crowd funding website such as Kick-starter because not only will it allow me to raise the money I need but it will also market my idea and gain me a wider audience which in turn will provide a greater income. However from the perspective of a first-time film maker and student I will try to create my film with limited budget as in my situation and deadline, none of there methods would be effective to help me with the finance of my project.
