S Senior Lunch Program

Presented by SeniorServ and the City of Yorba Linda Make new friends while enjoying a hot and nutritious lunch at the Yorba Linda Senior Lunch Program! Lunch is served Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. There is a $3.00 suggested donation for guests ages 60 and older and a $5.00 fee for guests 59 and younger. Lunch is available on a first come, first served basis and we recommend guests arrive 30 minutes early to reserve their lunch. Check-in for lunch begins at 9:30 a.m. Coffee and tea are also

available for purchase at that time for those who want to come early to socialize. A monthly lunch menu is available at the Community Center front counter or the City of Yorba Linda website.

Senior Grocery Program 1st & 3rd Thursday of the month, 8:30 a.m.

In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, the Yorba Linda Parks and Recreation Department offers the Senior Grocery Program, a twice-a-month “pop-up market” where senior attendees can select from various grocery items, including fresh produce, dairy, meats, eggs, and canned goods! No registration is required and there are no income requirements. Thursdays, April 6 & 20, May 4 & 18, and June 8* & 15*.

• Due to new CA legislation, we are no longer able to distribute plastic bags; please bring your own reusable bags.

• Since heavy or bulky items may be distributed, at least 3-4 reusable grocery bags are recommended per person. A personal cart is also recommended.

• Attendees will receive a number as they arrive. A number lottery will then be conducted and participants will receive food as their number is called. Doors open and numbers are distributed at 7:30 a.m. Distribution of food begins at approximately 8:30 a.m. Attendees should enter through the Imperial patio doors.

• Refrigerated/perishable items will be distributed. Plan to head straight home to distribute your refrigerated items.

• Distributed items are at, or close to, their “sell by” date. Items should be checked carefully for freshness before consuming.

Tips for Success at the Senior Grocery Program:

Senior Birthday Lunches In partnership with SeniorServ, monthly birthday luncheons are held in the Senior Lunch Program. A schedule of birthday luncheons is included on page 4. Beginning with the April luncheon, new procedures will be implemented for ticket sales: • Tickets will go on sale two weeks prior to each birthday luncheon at 9:00 a.m., unless otherwise noted.

Ticket sales dates will be advertised in the Senior Bulletin (page 4), on the lunch menu, and through announcements.

• On the morning of ticket sales, attendees will receive a number as they arrive. Numbers will be distributed by City staff beginning at 8:00 a.m. Attendees may enter through the hallway doors to the Imperial Room to receive their number.

• Each individual may purchase a maximum of two tickets. • Should tickets sell out, staff will take a waitlist. Individuals on the waitlist will be contacted by City staff if

additional tickets become available. • Tickets are non-transferrable between participants. • If an individual is unable to attend the lunch, a refund will be granted only if the City is able to resell the

ticket. The goal of these policies is to ensure tickets are sold as fairly as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.

It’s Tax Time Its tax time again…something we all look forward to, right? Well maybe not, but it is also prime time for scammers to come after unsuspecting taxpayers. Every taxpayer should: 1. Beware of tax preparers touting guaranteed or

inflated tax refunds. Eventually they are caught. The IRS or Franchise Tax Board then can, and will, audit all of their clients…even the clients who did nothing wrong.

2. Beware of groups masquerading as charitable organizations. There are websites to check on their legitimacy. Some will even give information on how your money is spent. (Note: not every charity will appear on any one site). Some of the more well-known are:

It’s Tax Time

3. A very good reason to file your taxes early:

Identity thieves use stolen SSNs to file bogus tax returns (with a different return address) to get big “refunds” before the actual taxpayer had a chance to file. This type of identity theft is more prevalent than you might think…and a real mess to clean up.

4. The IRS and Franchise Tax Board will never call you or e-mail you regarding your tax returns or amounts that you owe. These calls/emails are scams! Even if you get a legitimate communication (by US Mail), you should ALWAYS contact your tax preparer BEFORE you even think about paying, talking to, or sending anything to the IRS or FTB.

Wouldn’t a flat tax system be nice?

• Seniors 60 and older who are residents of Yorba Linda are eligible to use TRAILS.

• Non-residents may also utilize the service, provided they are dropped off and picked up at the Yorba Linda Community Center to be taken to local services within service parameters.

• Proof of age is required at time of registration.

Healthy Balance with Dan Balance is a control system that enables us to maintain our vertical position in space. When a person says “I lost my balance” what is actually being described is a breakdown in interaction among various components of the balance system. The tangible sense of “balance” that we experience is a synergy that results from the combination of balance system components. A basic understanding of the balance control system can help us lower the risk of falling. This class will address factors involved with falling, how balance works, and techniques to keep you safe and mobile. For more information, please visit www.DanLayne.com. Free, register in class with in-structor. Instructor: Dan Layne (Older Adults Program) Wednesdays, 2:00-3:30 p.m., Ongoing No class will be held 4/12.

2017 Senior Club Executive Board

Dear Members, Well we had a great winter with plenty of rain. Now of course Spring should be exploding with color and show us color we have not seen in a long time. It is with the greatest pleasure that I welcome back all of our experienced members and our new members to the Yorba Linda Senior Citizens Club. Our travel group has planned several great trips for this summer. They may still be looking for some new help (check with Billie Smith). We can also use some help with our club lunch (setting up, serving and cleaning). A Historian is needed as well. Check our other available programs as we have several things that would keep you busy such as card games and exercise classes. One thing for sure is we are all part of this large family of seniors. Happy trails to you. Wally Stairs 2017 Club President
