In the past thirty years, the child care field has developed

into a profession with many career opportunities for individualsinterested in working with young children. One of those careeropportunities is for nanny child care.

The nanny profession has a long history dating back hundreds

of years in Europe. The nannies employed in this country were

primarily employed by wealthy families in the early 20th century.

The nanny profession had waned in the early 1970's but has re-emerged as a child care career option because of the child carecrises in this country.

Due to this growing demand from families, there has been a

proliferation of nanny child care courses and programs. The number

of placement agencies involved with referring nannies to families

for jobs has also increased tremendously in the past few years.

Despite this increase in educational programs and placementagencies, there is not a published list of resources about nannies.

This bibliography includes material about nannies, mother'shelpers, au pairs, and governesses. It is a selected bibliography

it"of books, journal articles, newspaper articles, and audio visualmaterial on the nanny profession. It does not include any material

1414

that deals primarily with the child care aspect of the profession.

There is an abundance of documented material available in this

particular area.

The purpose of this bibliography is to help identify worksabout the nanny profession. The information should be useful to

(IgNI teachers, placement agencies, families, current nannl sat and peopleconsidering the nanny profession.

The list was compiled from many different sources: onlinenodatabases including ERIC, Magazine Index, and Newspaper Index;

Books in Print, British and Canadian Books in Print; and

$14 bibliographies of books and journal articles, etc.
