Makita power tools have been used by Landform Consultants, the award-winning landscape design and maintenance company, to create Alan Titchmarsh’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden, his first for 30 years. The legendary gardening broadcaster and RHS vice president, is celebrating his 50 year career in horticulture, and also half a century of RHS Britain in Bloom, by creating the feature garden at this year’s Show.

A wide collection of high performance Makita power tools, including jigsaws, drills, disc cutters, mitre saws, pumps, blowers, reciprocating saws, self-levelling lasers and demolition hammers, were selected for the build by Mark Gregory, managing director of Landform Consultants.

The 12-man team included six Australian landscapers who won Best in Show at Chelsea last year and were flown over especially to work on the garden. Some 80 tonnes of boulders, 20 tonnes of stone and 50 tonnes of soil have been manipulated and teased into position and adorned with rugged plants and mosses found on the Yorkshire moors, to more exotic seaside plants. The plants were grown and supplied by Kelways.

The show garden, designed by the talented and award winning Kate Gould, is called ‘From the Moors to the Sea’ and reflects Alan’s career journey that starts in the Yorkshire Dales, where he was born, and finishes with a seaside scene to represent the Isle of Wight, Alan’s current family home.

As the crown jewel in the Royal Palaces portfolio maintaining the 40-acres of grounds is a major task handled by Ground Control Limited, the national grounds maintenance contractor. Ground Control has recently equipped their Tower of London crew with Makita Outdoor Power Equipment machines to benefit from the performance and environmental advantages

of the Makita MM4 mini 4-stroke petrol engines and 36v cordless ground maintenance tools. These new Makita machines have rapidly become favourites of the Ground Control team. “These Makita tools are real stars,” says Ryan Thomas, head groundsman of the Ground Control Tower team.

The Makita MM4 mini 4-stroke engine is at the heart of the new 25.4cc EY2650H25H Pole Saw. This mighty machine has a bar length of 255mm and features a super-long telescopic pole with an adjustable length of 2.72m to 3.92m making those hard to reach branches easily accessible. The Pole Saw develops 1.03hp and has a no load chain speed of 21m/s.

new Makita sponsored r2 register

The R2 Register of Tree Work Operatives backed by Makita is due to go live following a pilot this Spring. The scheme aims to professionalise the arboricultural industry with an innovative online register of operatives’ skills, qualifications and experience. It supports individuals to gain recognition for their achievement, and make their profile more visible to employers. It also helps employers and contractors manage skill levels within their workforce and acts as a selling aid by projecting the industry qualifications of their staff to potential clients.

The new Makita 4.0Ah 18v Lithium-ion battery provides the power behind several new tools launched this year.

These batteries provide up to 33% extra run time in comparison with the 3.0Ah battery, are the same size and weight, which means they are totally compatible with most 18v tools, and have the same ergonomic and operational comfort.

The 4.0Ah battery works with our smart charger which reads the individual cells to determine the charge level and rate for each cell ensuring a speedy charge of an unbeatable 36 minutes.

They will power all Makita machines with either a yellow battery connector plate, or a black or yellow connector plate with a ‘Star’ symbol clearly indicated on the connection terminal.

For detailed information please visit www.makitauk.com.

The 4.0Ah 18v Li-ion battery (BL1840) will work with your 18v machine if it has a star on the connector plate, has a yellow connector plate with a

star or has a yellow connector plate only.

only Makita at the new saint-Gobain Academy

Daniel Brennen, Derby College and Daniel Handley, Sparsholt College, were the winners of the UK Landscape Gardening competition which took place at the Skills Show, NEC Birmingham, last November. They each took gold medal positions and will go into the selection process to join the GB squad who will attend the next bi-annual international World Skills competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015.

Contestants working in teams of two were tasked to build a professionally designed garden in 18 hours. The 6m x 6m plots contained timber constructions, walls, water features and paving in different materials and finished with soft planting. As Tools sponsor Makita provided power tools for the competitor’s use during training for this event and onwards to Sao Paulo. Good luck chaps!

At the new Saint-Gobain Training Academy located at Weber’s manufacturing HQ in Bedfordshire, one of seven Academies nationally, Makita power tools are the brand of choice for the 1000 or more trainees who will benefit from specialist training every year. Specially designed courses to meet product-specific requirements in the external wall insulation, renders, tiling products, concrete repair, construction mortars and flooring systems sectors will support best-practice methods in the use and application of Weber’s diverse

product portfolio. “In an effort to address the acute skills gap in this country it is important that we can satisfy increasing demand for our products with appropriate training for less experienced applicators, engineers and distributors, as well as those who are Up Skilling,” says Paul Rigby, Technical Academy manager, “and we are delighted that we can provide these high performance power tools to deliver the job every time. We find that leading brands work well together.”

4

It’s time to introduce some good housekeeping when you need to keep Makita power tools neatly organised for convenience and safe storage. With body-only tools, tools that are not sold in carry cases, and those with separate batteries and chargers, there is a real need for the MAKPAC connector case system.

These rugged cases made from shockproof ABS are available in four depths to suit every requirement. Strong moulded handles fold flush into recesses in the case lids and handgrip mouldings enable easy removal from the stack when latches are unfastened.

The latches that fasten the individual case lids slide further up to lock into the base clips of the case placed above.

This enables many cases to be stacked on top of each other, and locked together for safe and stable transportation, saving space in transit and when stored.

The MAKPAC hard shell connector cases are precision moulded to provide a dustproof and shower-proof storage system for valuable Makita power tools.

Makita dAB radio is loved by dogs!

Barney is an intelligent 26 months old Alsatian owned by Graham King of GK Electrician, Dorset. According to Graham, Barney enjoys listening to the Makita DAB radio. “He’s not so good at turning it on and off but he has a wide taste in music, from Snoop Dogg to Bach. He’s an incredible dog.”

“Our second year students are working on projects that require use of the RT0700 router trimmer so we were keen to refresh ourselves,” says Andrew Shenton. As part of our official sponsorship of the National School of Furniture, Makita has agreed to host Train the Trainer events for the furniture course technicians. Held at Makita’s own National Training Centre, Andrew Shenton, course leader of the three-year BA (Hons) Furniture: Design & Craft course offered at the Bucks New Uni and two of his experienced technicians spent

time discovering and experimenting with new tools and the correct and safest way to use them.

We are the only power tool manufacturer to offer training and the first to offer City & Guilds certified courses.

Check out the router/trimmer ‘How To’ video guide hosted on http://www.makitauk.com/video-library.html and also YouTube: http://bit.ly/1jCshTi which has now received over 25,000 plays.

The new Makita EK6100 (2-stroke) disc cutter is already proving the challenger against the market’s product leader. “According to an independent review that compares the EK6100 with an established brand that has been around for many years,” says Kevin Brannigan, marketing manager, “feedback from the hire industry says that our product represents a credible alternative.

It is lighter and easier to use, and exceeds the specification of the competitor brand with vibration ratings and power output that are second to none. The EK6100 also offers a valuable extra 10mm depth of cut.”

As a result of operator’s tests and customer usage, the hire business identifies that the EK6100 machines are out on test constantly, with no complaints, and positive comments that relate to robustness and reliability.

The lower weight at 8.5kg outperforms the competitor model which weighs in at 9.5kg making the Makita model easier and more comfortable to handle for longer.

For a limited period our extended free 3-year Service Cover package for the Makita EK6100 means an estimated £510 saving over the term. “This all adds up to a market leading, high performance product packed with rewards,” comments Mr Brannigan. Our congratulations go to John Smith of Suffolk who was the winner of the battery assisted bicycle competition in Professional Builder magazine. Out of almost 400 entries John calculated the distance the bike travelled on one charge to the nearest metre, that’s 19.85km exactly.

Also our congratulations to the winner John Lawes of Northamptonshire, who won the Makita BMR104 DAB site radio in the Autumn 2013 edition of Makita File.

rapid relief teams see the light

Makita’s bright illumination ML180 18v torches were commandeered by Rapid Relief Teams (RRT) in the worst affected counties of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall during the severe storms and flooding earlier this year. In support of Makita distributor Advance Fixings of Taunton, Devon, a member of the Plymouth Brethren Group, Makita responded promptly with the provision of powerful torches, batteries, chargers and durable bags.

raising funds for local causes

From the Christmas sale of cakes, raffles, bring and buy, calendars and the Tetris Challenge, staff at Makita are proud to have raised almost £1500 for the Willen Hospice, Milton Keynes. The charity provides specialist palliative care and support for families. “Our vision is to be the lasting and thriving provider of free care to all people affected by life limiting illness in our local community.”

As leaders in the UK’s professional power tool market our product and technical innovations continue to power the brand. The latest advance is the use of two 18v Lithium-ion batteries to produce 36v power for the rugged new 36v DHR263 26mm rotary hammer drill and the new DHS710 190mm circular saw.

We have delivered in excess of two million Li-ion batteries into the UK market since their launch in 2005 which means that many tradesmen already have quantities of these batteries.

While the performance of 36v power is required for certain site operations, it can now be generated by the more economical approach of using two 18v batteries together rather than taking the single 36v battery option - all this with no compromise in weight or performance.

We have already introduced a converter plate that enables two 18v batteries to be attached to a 36v machine but now the machine bodies have been developed to provide direct installation of the two 18v batteries into the machine, making a more compact installation possible.

Hertfordshire-based landscape contractor Ben Storey and his brother James have run their business, Grass Roots, for almost 15 years and have been putting the definitive landscaper’s kit to the test. In a particularly challenging project undertaken during February in torrential rain and gusting wind, with soaking ground, difficult access and a range of levels, the team set

bravely to work. A long time user of Makita tools, Ben was surprised at the extent of the range. Ben says that having these tools at their disposal for just a few days has given them a real insight into what is out there and what he can aspire to owning over the coming months and years. furniture student designs public art

An eye-catching piece of public art called the Timber Stack designed by a Furniture: Design and Craft student at Buckinghamshire New University has been unveiled as part of a new housing development.

Kathryn Sumroy is behind the artwork, which provides seating for people of all ages and sizes, at the Indigo Wharf development in Chelmsford, Essex.

Kathryn’s design was constructed using equipment from leading professional power tool manufacturer, Makita UK, a partner of The National School of Furniture (NSF) at Bucks New University.

The artwork was unveiled by Councillor Trevor Miller, the Mayor of Chelmsford, marking the completion of the development and celebrating the heritage of Chelmsford’s wharfside and canal.

Mark Brown and Clare Lally have been lured into the amazing space of George Clarke’s world. As he explores extraordinary small builds, where people turn tiny spaces into the most incredible places to live, work and play.

Mark and Clare are stepping inside or, more accurately, they’re stepping downstairs, for beneath their detached home in Manchester they have discovered a void – a space the size of the footprint of their house that’s equal to four rooms! And during the course of their four month build, and £10,000 budget, they are converting the space into a Casino-style man-den – with a pool table, a gym and small hot tub with a utility area, a corridor space which will be utilised as a wine store, and a small bathroom.

“As the filming schedule is relentless and we do the building work before and after our full time jobs we knew by week two that we were already slipping behind the schedule and George and his film crew wait for no man,” said Mark. “We quickly realised that my original

tools were tired and it was time to replace and upgrade.“We shopped around and found a great package of essential kit by Makita and wow – does this stuff perform. We just couldn’t bring the project in on time without it. This was an essential investment.”

Mark and Clare recommend that anyone starting their own build should consider what they need and invest in the very best. “On the down side, there are no excuses now!” says Mark.

So, George has used the combi drill, Mark can’t be parted from the LF1000 flip over saw and the reciprocating saw has cut a useful hole in the ceiling of the den to facilitate a feature glass floor above which will allow natural light to filter down into the cellar rooms.Look out for the Casino episode on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces series, Channel 4, scheduled for this summer.

Our brand new 40mm SDS max rotary hammer made its first public appearance at the Executive Hire News show earlier this year. The new HR4013C has a 25% power increase to 7.6 joules of impact energy whilst Makita’s new and improved AVT – anti vibration technology – reduces vibration ratings to enable all-day working.

In hammer drilling mode the rating is just 5.0m/s², increasing work time permitted before reaching ELV to eight hours, with the added bonus of the machine weighing just 6.8kgs. The overall performance increase gives a 20% uplift in drilling capacity and a 45% increase in efficiency when chiselling or breaking.

The ultra-low vibration ratings of the HR4013C contributes significantly to site operations where a variety of tools can be used by an operator in any eight hour shift without exceeding the safety level.

Recognised as the most prestigious Health & Safety award, Speedy Integrated Services has acknowledged this tool as Best New Product. “Hand Arm Vibration is a problem that affects many thousands of workers and causes serious and permanent occupational illness.

This product was chosen due to the fact that it significantly reduces vibration in use from previous models, extending the time that it can be safely and continuously used,” says Andy Connor, Supply Chain Director, Speedy.

Makita has received a Top Product Award from Professional Heating & Plumbing Installer magazine in response to an editorial on Makita SDS bits. Tools tester guru Roger Bisby says:

“You can pick up sets of SDS chisels and drills all over the place these days and let’s be honest, at the price they are churned out nobody but the naive would expect amazing quality. Having said that, this little set from Makita is not half bad for the money. They will certainly do a turn for the plumber who finds himself scrabbling through the back of the van looking for the right size bit among piles of tangled metal.”

For your chance to win please answer the following questions and enter on line.

1) How long does it take to charge the new Makita 4.0Ah batteries?
