    Mass Spectrometer Source Cleaning

A small buffing wheel is usedto polish metal filament andsource parts to a high luster.

Parts are thoroughly cleanedin solvents and rinsed in a

    state-of-the-art ultrasonic aqueous cleaning system.

Service NotesSource cleaning begins with the complete disassembly of the

source. The metal parts are cleaned and polished, then washed insolvents and baked out in an oven. All ceramic insulators are sandblasted followed by solvent washing and bake out. If broken, most of these ceramics can be replaced at no extra cost, with the ex-ception of those with a cost of $50.00 or more. Vespel insulators arewashed in solvent and baked out. If old filaments are included on thesource they are repaired at no extra charge.

Additional charges may be incurred if metal parts, source heaters, thermocouples or filaments damaged beyond repair need to be re-placed. If Vespel insulators are broken or missing, they will need tobe replaced at an additional cost.

After all parts have been repaired, cleaned and baked out, thesource is reassembled. The filament is reinstalled and accuratelyaligned over the source hole. The source is checked for resistanceleaks as well as visual alignment of all parts.

Not included in repairs are the replacement of the filaments, collectors, heaters, screws or other missing parts.

Normal turn around is 72 hours unless components need to bereplaced that we need to custom order from the manufacturer.

our urnaround on Source CleaningFor rush 24 hour turn around, sources should be sent to SIS via

Federal Express or other overnight carrier. Once received, they willbe cleaned and shipped the next day via an overnight carrier suchas Federal Express. Please include your purchase order. If yoursource is not one of the ones listed, please include a copy of themanufacturers assembly instructions and schematic of the sourceassembly.

Shipping in for RepairNormally the source block and associated parts should be

shipped in for repair. The source should be thoroughly wrapped inpackaging material and double boxed to avoid damage in shipment. If available, a copy of your source assembly/disassembly schematicfrom your mass spec manual should be sent in with your source.

Not an exchange program - your source is cleaned, repaired and returned to you. Filaments repaired and accurately aligned on source.

24 hour turnaround is available, additional charges may apply.

Expert Cleaning and Repair of Mass Spectrometer Sources

Assembly of Source is Done in a DustFree Clean Environment

Filaments are sandblasted with aluminum oxide and glassbeads to remove impurities.

    Filament Aligned on MS Source

In addition to the sources listed in the next few pages, SIS can clean and repair sources from any other mass spectrometers. CallSIS with your requirements. We will clean and repair your mass spectrometer source.

Repair of Mass Spectrometer Filaments & Heaters

Four Types of Repairs Now Available at SISAs the world leader in developing new methods and new alloysfor mass spectrometer filaments, SIS can now provide four dif-ferent types of repair for your mass spectrometer to provide forimproved performance.

Standard Filament Repairs - Part No. FILREPNormally filaments sent for repair are repaired using the same materials and filament geometry that was used in the original manufacture of the mass spectrometer filaments. This is ourstandard filament repair unless you request a different type ofrepair such as the other configurations described below.

NEW - SISAlloy Filament Repairs - Part No. FILREPASIS has spent more than four years developing this new alloyof rhenium for mass spectrometer filament repair and manufac-ture. Our research has shown that by alloying pure rhenium witha small concentration of yttria, we have been able to improve fil-ament performance by reducing warping and sagging of the fil-aments. This alloy is now used in a variety of wire sizes and coilsizes. See page A8 for additional details or visit our website forthe application notes on this new patented technology.

Yttria Coated Filaments Repairs - FILREPYSIS can coat your standard repaired filament with yttria oxide.Several manufacturers have used the yttria oxide coating on fil-aments to increase filament emission and lower filament temper-ates, which results in increased filament life. See page A9 foradditional details or the application note on our website.

Yttria Coated SISAlloy Filament Repairs - FILREPYASIS has combined the two technologies above by yttria coatingour SISAlloy filaments. This provides a filament which will notwarp or sag and has greater emission and longer filament life.See page A9 for additional details.

S IS introduces our new yttria/rhenium alloy filamentsfor mass spectrometers. This filament material resultedfrom an SIS intensive four year study and investigationon mass spectrometer filament life. In these studies we have dis-covered that by alloying rhenium with a small concentration of yt-tria, the crystal structure of the rhenium material was altered, which resulted in a stronger filament that is much less susceptibleto warping. The new filaments perform electrically identical topure rhenium filaments.

The two studies on the right demonstrate the comparison ofpure rhenium to the new SISAlloy (Y/Re alloy) filaments. By re-ducing warping and sagging the life of the filaments improved.

Electron microscopy studies demonstrated that the yttria oxideparticles intermixed with the rhenium particles which minimizedthe grain growth in the alloy filament. In comparison, the pure rhe-nium filaments exhibited larger and longer grain sizes. This smallergrain size in the alloy filament appears to strengthen the filamentwire to provide a more stable filament that displays less sag orwarping than pure rhenium filaments. The property of holding itsshape has been demonstrated for straight wire filaments, multiplecoiled filaments, and pin shaped filaments when used in both ACand DC filament operating circuits. See our application notes onour website for additional details.

Your existing filaments can be repaired with this yttria/rhe-nium wire in place of the standard rhenium. SISAlloy repairedfilaments are available for most models of the Agilent, Varian, andThermo mass spectrometers. Other filaments will be available inthe near future. We currently have this alloy available in wire formonly with diameters of 0.003", 0.004", 0.005", 0.0055", 0.006", and0.008". Other sizes may be available in the near future.

SIS Yttria Coated MS Filament Repair

S IS can now repair your filaments with yttria coated rhe-nium in place of the standard rhenium. Standard rheniumfilaments are electrically coated with a thin film of yttriaoxide to produce longer life filaments.

Filaments emit electrons at lower filament current. Filament runs cooler Filament lifetimes increase by 2 to 3 times Yttria coating protects the filament from oxidation Yttria is environmentally safer than thoria

Yttria and thoria coated filaments have been used in the vacuumtube industry for more than 50 years. Both thoria and yttria havelower work functions than rhenium and tungsten. Therefore theyemit electrons at lower filament current and results in increased fil-ament life. In addition the thin oxide coating on the filament surfaceprotects the filament wire from oxidation or chemical attack. This iswhy the yttria coated filaments are used for leak detector filaments.Filaments can be coated with either thoria or yttria since they havesimilar work functions and operational parameters. However, thoriahas environmental issues due to its radon decomposition by-product.This is not an issue with yttria and this is the reason we normally rec-ommend that all of our customers use yttria for their coated filaments.

An application note on our website demonstrates the advan-tages of using the yttria coating on your mass spectrometer. Thisstudy reports that the filament tends to operate at about 500C lowerin temperature to achieve the same emission as an uncoated massspectrometer filament. By operating the filament at a lower temper-ature the filament lifetime will increase by 2 to 3 times that of a stan-dard filament.

Caution: Do not touch the filament surface. The yttriacoating is a weak electrostatic coating on the surface of thewire. The yttria coating is easily removed by touching or roughhandling.

    Yttria Coated SISAlloy Filaments

By combining the new SISAlloy filament material with the yttriacoating on this filament material, one can achieve the ultimate massspectrometer filament. The SISAlloy provides for a filament whichhas less tendency to warp or sag. The yttria coating improves thefilament even further by enabling the filament to operate at a lowertemperature. The study below demonstrates the improved perform-ance of these filaments with no sagging and up to 3 times the nor-mal filament life.

Agilent Filament RepairThe Agilent 5973/5975/5977 filaments can be repaired using ourSISAlloy filament coils which are then coated with yttria. Our inhouse studies have shown that these filaments typically last 2 to 3times longer than standard plain rhenium filaments. In addition byusing SISAlloy instead of pure rhenium, filament warping is re-duced thereby improving filament performance and lifetime. Thepictures above demonstrate 3 times normal life from one of ourstudies in which the filament was cycled on and off. In our studies, standard rhenium filaments burn out after about 4,500 cy-cles. However the yttria coated filament shown above was stillworking after 16,000 cycles.

Agilent 5972, 5973, 5975, and 5977We currently have four options to repair these filaments.

    1. Part No. FILREP - Standard 2 coil rhenium filament. The original filament for the 5972 and 5973 was a 2 coil rhenium filament. We can repair these filaments for these same specifications.

    2. Part No. FILREPA - SISAlloy 4 coil yttria/rhenium filament. The new 4 coil filaments can be repaired with the new SISAlloy (yttria/rhenium alloy). This rhenium alloy filament will have less tendency to warp thereby improving your filaments performance. For details see page A8 or visit our web site for our 2010 ASMS presentation on these filaments.

    3. Part No. FILREPY - Standard 2 coil rhenium rilament coated with yttria. Coating the standard rhenium filament with yttria results in increased filament life over that of the standard filaments. For details see Page A9.

    3. Part No. FILREPYA - Yttria coated SISAlloy 4 coil filament. By coating the SISAlloy low sag filament with yttria, a filament is produced which will have at least 2 times the lifetime of the standard filaments. For details see Page A9.

ther Agilent Filament RepairsThe Agilent Technologies filaments can be repaired by SIS. We completely clean each fila-ment assembly and replace the rhenium filament or coil. These filaments can also be re-paired with SISAlloy and also yttria coated filament coils as described above and on pagesA8 and A9.

T he metal filament shown on the right is a filament similar to the original Thermo filament for those users who prefer this style filament. However, severaldesign improvements have been made for better performance. The filament shield is con-structed from a heavier gauge stainless steel material and is much stronger. The filament posts havebeen shortened and are constructed of a heavier gauge metal to help eliminate filament sagging.

Ceramic Body Filament for Thermo 3000 and 3200 Series Mass Spectrometer These ceramic body filaments were designed to eliminate many of the problems associated with the Thermo metal type filaments. Our new design is strong and durable. The short metal posts hold the filament wire straight, while tension is maintained to minimizing sagging. The ceramic body eliminates shorting of the filament to the source. The filaments come complete with silver wireleads and stainless steel mounting screws. Connections to instrument lead wires can be made with the connectors shown in the listedbelow (requires two connectors).
