NEWS OF MEMBERS

Francis P. Chinard, M.D. in collaboration with William Sharpe M.D.,taught the History of Medicine course last fall and Current Issuesin Medicine this spring at UMD-New Jersey Medical School. Dr.Chinard is co-editing and co-authoring A History of the Physiologyof Breathing with Donald F. Proctor, M.D., Johns Hopkins UniversitySchool of Hygiene.

Hugh E. Evans, M.D., who presented "The Medical History of FranklinD. Roosevelt" at the MHSNJ fall meeting, will present a paper onthe same topic at an FDR Conference to be held in 1995 at LouisianaState University in Shreveport.

Former member, Gerald N. Grob, Ph.D., was the first recipient ofthe Daniel Gorenstein Memorial Award presented by RutgersUniversity. The award will be given annually to a Rutgers facultymember noted for both outstanding scholarly achievement andexceptional service to the University. The presentation held onApril 4 included a lecture by Professor Grob entitled, "TheMentally Ill in America: Retrospect and Prospect."

Barbara Smith Irwin, MHSNJ Secretary-Treasurer, takes office onApril 28 as president of Archivists and Librarians in the Historyof the Health Sciences (ALHHS), a national professionalorganization, at the annual meeting to be held in New York Cityprior to the American Association for the History of Medicineannual conference.

Donald F. Kent, M.D. (retired) was honored on February 25 at adedication and naming ceremony of the Donald F. Kent, M.D. FamilyPractice Center, the new home of the Chatham Family Practice.

MHSNJ President, Sandra Moss, M.D., prepared a history of medicineart exhibit in the Department of Medicine, St. Peter's MedicalCenter, New Brunswick. Dr. Moss was appointed recently to serve onthe Committee on Relations with Professional Associations of theAmerican Association for the History of Medicine.

Murray A. Rosenberg, M.D. will deliver a paper at the NationalMuseum of Civil War Medicine during the second conference on CivilWar medicine which will take place August 5, 6 and 7. Dr.Rosenberg will discuss the career of William A. Hammond, SurgeonGeneral of the U.S. Army (1862-1864). For information about theconference, contact the Museum at 48 East Patrick Street, P.O. Surgery: an Illustrated History by Ira M. Rutkow, M.D. (St. Louis:Mosby, 1993) received an excellent review in the March 13, 1994issue of The New York Times Book Review. Reviewer Sherwin Nulandwrote: "...this book will take its place as a definitive work,perhaps the definitive work, of surgical history written in theEnglish language."

"A Crisis in Therapeutics: Osteopathy and Diphtheria Antitoxin in1915" was presented by Robert Thompson, Ed.D. on March 17 tomembers of the Theobald Smith Society in New Brunswick.

Pasteur Prize Winner Announced

Lucy Page Funkhouser, a student at Chatham High School, is thefirst recipient of the Pasteur Prize, sponsored by the MedicalHistory Society. The Pasteur Prize is given for an award-winningessay on topics in the history of medicine written by a high schoolstudent. Ms. Funkhouser's essay is titled "The History of LeadPoisoning: Lead Poisoning as an Example of Public Inaction." Aprize of $350 will be presented to her at the awards ceremony atChatham High School this spring by incoming MHSNJ president, Dr.William Campbell.

Nadia Ahmad, Mt. Saint Dominic Academy (Jersey City), ElizabethDavidson, Delran High School, and Abby Struthers, Ridgewood HighSchool, were selected runners-up and will be awarded certificatesfor their essays. Over 130 entries were received from New Jerseystudents; 12 essayists were selected finalists.

Surgery Exhibit Opens

"The Cutting Edge - Surgery in Medical History and Surgery at theNew Jersey Medical School" is the title of a recently openedexhibit at the UMDNJ-George F. Smith Library, Newark. Juxtaposedwith illustrations from historical texts are photographs of NJMSSection Chiefs in the Department of Surgery and Surgery Chiefs fromAffiliated Hospitals. The exhibit includes rare books from theMorris H. Saffron Collection donated to UMDNJ by the Academy of

"Silent Auction" Book Sale

Duplicates, non-medical, facsimiles and deaccessioned books andreprints are currently being offered for sale in a silent auctionby UMDNJ Libraries' Special Collections Department. Proceeds fromthe sale will be deposited into the Morris H. Saffron Endowment forBooks in the History of Medicine; interest from the endowment isused to purchase rare and antiquarian materials for SpecialCollections. A list of materials being offered and instructionsfor bidding are available by contacting the Department at 201/982-6293 or 982-7830. The deadline for bids to be received by theSpecial Collections Department is on Thursday, May 5.

AAHM to Meet in NewYorkCity

The 67th annual meeting of the American Association for the Historyof Medicine will take place in New York City from April 28 to May1 with headquarters at the Park Central Hotel. MHSNJ memberspresenting papers are Christopher Sellers, M.D., Ph.D.,"Occupational Health, Science, and Objectivity: Lessons from the1930's" on April 28, and Bart Holland, Ph.D., "Epidemics as aRemedy for Overpopulation in Tertullian's De Anima" on April 29.Another member, James T. Goodrich, M.D., is the Coordinator of thebook exhibit of antiquarian books and recent publications in thehistory of medicine.

Epileptics at Skillman Topic of Local History Publication

A History of the New Jersey State Village for Epileptics atSkillman by Walter C. Baker has been published by the Van HarlingenHistorical Society. The old Skillman institution, a veryprogressive undertaking when it opened in 1898, has been all butforgotten since medical science developed effective drug therapiesto control the disease.

Walter Baker was employed as state sanitarian at Skillman from 1954until his retirement in 1978. The twenty-six page history begins
