From Adam and Eve to Antony and Cleopatra, the fig has played an important role in both biblical and historic cultures. A symbol of unity, prosperity and even love, Fig is a fitting name for our stunning, historic, rich downtown. We see figs a lot like we see Lancaster… small, sophisticated, but not too sweet.

Thank you to our Community Supporters:The Good Cooking Store, Willow Valley Retirement Communities, Accomac Inn & Accomac Catering, M. Joel Frey Artisan Construction, Encore: The Festival and Faulkner BMW are committed to the City of Lancaster. A good plan takes the best creative and transforms it from ideas into reality.

The City of Lancaster and its residents have a caring and giving heart. We are blessed to live in a community that is so generous, loving and selfless.

There is so much to love about Lancaster. I am inspired by just walking the streets which are rich with history.Leslie Mann

Lancaster is a small world, and Social Media makes it even smaller. One great big family.

It’s impossible not to feel alive at Central Market. We inhale the warm scents wafting from honey wheat bread, smoked sausage and steaming coffees and then exhale cheery greetings to our friends — old and new —stocked with us in the aisles. We know we can be at only one place. And as we gaze past rows animated in gladiolas, strawberry rhubarb pie, and greenery that Roy G. Biv’s name could never do justice, we’re already dreaming how it will all look and taste on our own tables. We’re overcome by epicurean relish, so it might be a bit too easy to consider the sixty-plus stand owners at Central Market as just the people behind the tables. But actually, all together, they are the people at the table, working as one: not only stand owners, but a community taking ownership of maintaining Historic downtown Lancaster as a fresh destination. Every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday they take a stand. Now, in every issue of FIG®, they’re taking a bow.

words for the mind.

When Charlotte Bronte wrote her now beloved novel Jane Eyre (1847), it was on scraps of paper, at night, while

kept awake by a nagging toothache. When Elizabeth Hurley conceived a life for the now treasured Lancaster Literary Guild (2000), it was on accumulated wits of conviction, both day and night, while repeatedly awakened to the

exciting notion that the “writing life” and “everyday life” do not have to make strange bedfellows—that binding authors,

readers, educators, and students in lasting relationships is just what Lancaster needed. Considering that the Guild has just celebrated its eleventh anniversary in February, it appears Lancaster is of the same mind. A quite lively one.

“We’re the only community supported [literary] Guild in the country; I don’t know of anyone else like us,” Betsy contends.

From its historic downtown home, the Guild extends to its members and to the general public, among other offerings,

a renowned author lecture series featuring Pulitzer-Prize winners; rotating literary exhibits; writing classes; free

afternoon lectures at schools and churches; the selection of Lancaster’s Poet Laureate; and publication of the

acclaimed literary journal Rapportage.

Every family has an intangible bond. The people of Downtown Lancaster define it. And their rich genealogy boasts one progenitor, Steve Murray, owner of Zap & Co. — the original inspiration for a now thriving community of businesses and close-knit friends. No matter how extended the downtown family gets as it grows and becomes more powerful and eclectic, it will always come together to embrace and help a member of its own — in this case, the funky, dedicated father who started it all.

UPCOMING SPECIAL EVENTS

THIS IDEA—THAT GROWTH IS POSSIBLE each time we create something new—is one of the driving forces behind what we do at Evolution Power Yoga. At our most basic level, EPY provides yoga classes that help people change the way they treat their bodies and their minds. Through healthy movement and contemplation, they create healthier lifestyles that allow them to get more out of life.

But if helping people get fit was all we wanted to do, we would have just stopped there. Instead, we knew the incredible community that surrounds our little studio gave us a unique opportunity to provide something more.

In addition to offering nearly 30 regular classes a week, we’ve developed an ongoing series of workshops, teacher trainings, and master classes to give people the opportunity to experience something new. From absolute beginners to advanced yoga practitioners, our students can choose the programs and workshops that are right for them. In doing so, they open themselves up to a world of possibility and take the chance to create a new way of being.

We know that it can be difficult sometimes to step out of a comfort zone. That’s why we do everything we can to ensure a safe, welcoming environment where you can enjoy the support of people who care about your success.

THE EVOLUTION OF A SOUL.A JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME.

Life always seems more amazing when something new is created—a newborn baby, a budding romance, a

proud new graduate. It’s during these moments that we remember the breadth of possibility that exists around us. Often, they become cherished memories that impact the

individuals we become from then on. They are the moments in which we grow.

Our instructors are CPR certified and have a minimum of 200 hours of training each. They also actively continue their education both in and out of the yoga studio, whether it be studying advanced anatomy with the nation’s leading experts, traveling the globe to attend world-class trainings, or pursuing advanced degrees in environmental studies or physical therapy.

Whatever it is you’re interested in, we encourage you to check out our website to learn about the exciting programs being offered right here in Lancaster at EPY. Perhaps you’ll even stop by our studio to talk with one of our instructors about how you can become a part of our community. Most importantly, we’re dedicated to providing you with the continued learning you’re looking for. If there’s an area of study you’re interested in that we haven’t touched upon yet, let us know and we’ll do our best to fulfill that need.

Here at EPY, we know that personal growth and inspired learning are lifelong journeys. We hope that you choose to take a chance on yourself and enroll in a workshop or program that moves you beyond the limits of what you thought was possible. Until you reach for something new, you may never uncover what the world truly has to offer—and what only you can offer back.

SOME PEOPLE DRIVE TO GET SOMEPLACE. OTHERS DRIVE TO GET AWAY FROM SOMEPLACE. Adam Taylor drives to write songs. And with his second, more “mature” album primed for release in May, the 20-year-old singer songwriter has logged a lot of miles. Most have been in his mind, where after making those “necessary connections” — all the while drumming on the steering wheel — he heads home, profound lyrical metaphors in tow, to Lancaster. “Even as a kid, I knew I wanted to live in Lancaster,” Adam recalls. And by most definitions, he still was a kid, just a high school senior, when he began commuting here on weekends to record “Playing Piano Drunk,” his first album. Talk about driven.

But a poet? Adam considers the title a misnomer: “There’s no deep message in my stuff... It’s just words.” They pose questions, maybe, about consumption or politics, though that’s just what “bleeds through,” shrugs the modest musician. Ultimately, he thinks music should be fun. Witness his catchy, quirky brand of pop music. It’s far from ear candy, though; yet it can be unwrapped, revealing diverse genres grounded in multiple layers of rock strata: It’s sonic; it sprouts from largely forgotten 60’s folk; it’s at times Doors dark. In one song there’s blue grass, some hip hop, and then a very different manner of question, like, “How would Blondie play this?” When it comes to playing a show in Lancaster, Adam describes the experience just as vividly: “it’s like being on the phone with a friend you haven’t seen in three months.” So, when he’s out on the road this summer, promoting the new album, many fans will be asking just one thing: “What would Blondie say...?”

Find out more about Adam and the release of his debut album at adamtaylormusic.com.

INDIE CITY. ARTS TOWN. The City of Lancaster has not only a national “Indie City” ranking, we’re also — perhaps even more enviable — an authentic arts town. Artists who come here will say so. They come to perform, to paint, write poetry and to be inspired. We’re a place where artists come to create and people flock to experience. It’s a beautiful equation. More arts = more activity. More inspiration, more innovation and, frankly, more money. For everyone.

Artists create. Ideas spark. People act. Good happens. Art means energy for everyone. But it doesn’t happen alone. Art needs an audience. Art needs supporters. Art needs us.

Give a hand to creativity in the City of Lancaster. Buy a painting, give theater tickets, attend a concert, visit a museum, take an art class, make a donation.

Art happens because it must, but art grows where it can. Buy art today. Keep the spirit alive.

“ART IS THE THREAD OF CREATIVITY THAT

CONNECTS OUR COMMUNITY.”

art expands the mind.

Page 43: Fig Lancaster Spring 2011

IT’S EASY TO THINk OF A PERIOD AS THE END. But it’s also the beginning of a new sentence, a new paragraph – the next chapter in our educational story. Plus, we can’t make a question mark without one. How would we ask if Lancaster is punctuated with all of the unique and extraordinary learning opportunities that we want and need for ourselves, for our community, for our children? How would we find out that the answer is a definitive “yes"? As Lancastrians, we are indeed lucky. We are never sentenced to stagnate. So ask those questions. Get answers. Ask more questions. Then go ahead. Be emphatic... Be in the know!

But as we all know quite well already, the first questions that come up are typical and diametric: public school or private school; boarding school or home school; trade school or college. And while these are all worthwhile debates, and many options on each side of each abound here in Lancaster, it’s important to realize that the bigger questions often have to do with knowing ourselves – and that as singular as Lancaster is as a city; as a community of learners, it is equally heterogeneous. With lots of outlets for genius, of course...

Ahead in this issue, you will find highlighted seventeen educational opportunities ranging from day-care to non-traditional options for working adults. They include boarding school, private school, and faith-based school; degree programs in art, medicine, and communications; traditional studies and progressive ones; colleges – big and small, state and local; creative writing, academic writing; business plan writing; courses that lead to the stage and to the boardroom; and so much more. And each one of the seventeen individuals that you will meet, from four to forty, represents not only a “success story” from each place, but also embodies an individual learning style that has been recognized, stimulated, and fulfilled to lead to a leader. After all, they’re not all born. It’s not always elementary, either, to turn a verb into a noun. But the sheer quantity and quality of educational alternatives open to us in Lancaster makes it a lot easier – even for those who appreciate a good challenge.

We’ve all seen Rodin’s thinker, frozen in pale alabaster, consumed in his individual musings. And for many, this is the perfect material representation for their intellectual aspirations. For them, Lancaster offers plenty of intense and rigorous curricula from a classical standpoint. Others, however, require a hands-on approach that doesn’t involve one of them balled into a fist on the head. For these visual and direct-minded students, there are myriad options for interactive learning, too. Self-starters can forge their own path from Sri Lanka to creative director at a local design firm in a few short years. “Lifers” who thrive in a nurturing one-on-one environment from kindergarten through high school can achieve independence through a solo performance at Carnegie Hall. And a severely disabled teenager can secure confidence through a troupe performance in local theatre.

Whether they’ve ended up at Harvard; Princeton; or on the Rachel Ray Show; on call in the intensive care unit; volunteering in the Latino community; or speaking Chinese, Latin, or simply with more mettle, these Lancaster learners answer the “education question” with all of the emphasis on one thing: multiple choices. (Only with no annoying circles to fill in.)

A CLASSICAL EDUCATION: At Dayspring, the classics add to the depth and breadth of the Principle Approach® education. Students learn the disciplines of logic, rhetoric, and Exegesis, so students learn the art of reason, the ability to communicate persuasively, and understand original texts of Scripture. Classical languages of Latin and Greek are taught.

OUR MISSION: Partner with families and churches to equip our students to:

• Acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ in every area of life

• Develop a biblical worldview

• Become citizens of excellence in character and scholarship

T HE MISSION OF LDCC is to provide high quality early care and educational programs for low/moderate income working

families at an affordable cost and in a nurturing environment that is based on the importance of secure relationships. Our purpose is to create a community of caring and learning focusing on the young children who are most likely to risk failure in school and life. By providing this service, families are

strengthened because parents can work or go to school and their children are given the confidence and skills to successfully enter school ready to learn, grow, and take risks. It is also our intent that families succeed economically and emotionally, which in turn strengthens the overall community.

Along with this event, we are excited to introduce our first annual Junior Tennis for Tots fundraising event. Join us at the Lancaster Country Club on Saturday, April 30th.Since 1915, Lancaster Day Care Center has been providing quality child care to low income working families. IN LANCASTER CITY, historic preservation and metamorphosis go hand in hand, especially regarding our architecture. Shoulder to shoulder stand proud victorian queens, trendy atmospheric warehouses, and sleek modern condos. In the following pages, back to back, are all of the people, tools and help you need to renovate or innovate your way into one of them – into a home – in the City of Lancaster. Lancaster is better. Not bigger. Maybe not faster. But always, and forever, better.

CITY HOMES LOADED WITH CHARACTER.

Economical. Farsighted. Sensible. Prudential means all of things. And so does city living, but with a rich infusion of dynamism, camaraderie and character — that undefinable mix that makes these three simple terms stand for so much more. You don’t need to look in the urban dictionary to find them, though. Prudential representatives Andy Esbenshade, Ginger Volpone, Carole Kirchner, Louise Miller and Jeff Lefevre know them quite well already. And they want to show you that the word on the streets of Lancaster City is a quite familiar one: Home.
