Michael Johns

Michael Johns, dubbed the sexiest singing Australian man alive by Playboy and American Idol Season 7 Alumni will be performing at the BABC OC charity gala 'Fifty Shades of Food, Glorious Food'. Michael was born in Perth, Australia but it wasn't until he moved to America that he pursued a music career as a singer/songwriter.

He was an Atlanta-based solo artist before starting a band in Los Angeles. Michael handled vocals and songwriting duties for the Rising, who signed with Maverick Records and released a debut album, Future Unknown, in 2003. The album's lead-off track, "Cradle," received some radio airplay that summer, but the group split up after losing their contract with Maverick.

Michael chose to go solo once again and at the age of 28, he auditioned for the seventh season of American Idol in July 2007. "You're like a white soul singer," remarked judge Simon Cowell, who granted Johns admittance into the competition. Johns sailed through his initial weeks on American Idol; receiving comparisons to Jim Morrison and Michael Hutchence the lead singer and lyricist of rock band INXS. He eventually finished in eighth place, having received a surprising dismissal after a performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On." (One year later, Idol introduced a rule allowing the judges to veto one elimination per season, inspired in part by Michael's and unpopular and unexpected exit).

Following the show he performed on the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2008 which toured 53 cities from 1 July 2008 to 13 September 2008. On 12 December 2008, he released a song, "Another Christmas," which he had penned in 2006 when circumstances kept him from returning to his native Australia for Christmas. Proceeds from the song were advertised as going to the Red Cross and MDA's ALS division. In 2009, he released a single called "Heart on my Sleeve" and an album titled Hold back my Heart, which paired his voice with a batch of soulful, Southern-style songs which sold 20,000 copies.

Charities Benefitting from the Culinary Gala

The British American Business Council Orange County (BABC OC) is committed to giving back to the community. Scholarships are awarded to 16-17 year old students via an essay contest. Two winners are selected and sent to the ACS International School - British Studies Summer Program in Cobham, England. This all-expense paid trip to England for two weeks includes airfare, room/board and day trips. BABC OC hopes that this life altering experience opens up the eyes of students who would not generally have the opportunity to travel overseas.

Pure Game is nonprofit that uses a progressive form of soccer to serve underprivileged children. We use the power of positive words and encouragement to build the child's confidence, giving them the courage to explore life. We bring children hope for a brighter future.
