Fifth Sunday of Easter

Weekend of May 17 / 18, 2014

In the first letter of Peter, we are taught that God made us and chose us to reveal to the world who he is. Chris-tian stewards understand that they do not live for them-selves. They live to be stewards of Christ’s presence within them, and to make his presence known to others. They do it at Mass. They do it in faith-sharing groups. They do it at work. And they do it daily in a thousand dif-ferent ways; and where they express their love for God and others in a manner that suits their situation and per-sonality. Name for yourself some of the ways this week you will make Christ’s presence known to others.

The Invitation

The familiar words spill into the air: In my father's house there are many

dwelling places.

These words fill the heart with gratitude and love.

It is the invitation to come, be, To see the Savior face to face.

The invitation to continue good works,

alms giving, To have compassion and mercy on all

Those who may cross our path.

The invitation to take to heart these words:

I am the way the truth and the life, Says the Lord.

Message from Fr. Dave A remarkable and radical document was issued last year by Pope Francis and it ranges widely and challeng-es complacency at every lev-el, some have called it the Magna Carta for church re-form. I welcome anyone to Google and read the entire document and I’m only go-ing to quote randomly some of the Statements the Holy Father makes. This is not

just another church document; “The Joy of the Gos-pel” and the Latin is “Evangelii Gaudium” online you will find it under the Latin name. It has five chapters and it’s chapter four that has gotten the most atten-tion in the media. In chapter four Love is used 154 times, Joy 109, The Poor 91 times, Peace 58 times, Justice 37 times, and the Common Good 15 times. The Pope calls for church renewal which cannot be deferred and, please God, at age 77 let Pope Francis live long enough to get the job done. Most of this document is his own personal insight and reflects a man who before the Papacy was Bishop of a Third World South American Diocese. He writes: “The Service of charity is a constituent ele-ment of the church’s mission and indispensable ex-pression of her very being. To read the scripture makes it clear that the Gospel is not merely about our personal relationship with God but is about lov-ing God who reigns in our world. And the life of so-ciety will be a setting for universal fraternity, justice, peace. We are meant to have an impact on society and it is no longer possible to claim that religion should be restricted to the private sphere but impact societal and national life. We may not silence the message of Saint Francis or Mother Teresa of Calcut-ta. I ask God to give us more politicians capable of sincere and effective dialogue aimed at healing the evils in our world. Politics remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity as it seeks the common good. The growth in justice requires politi-cal decision geared to a better distribution of income. Economy should be the art of achieving a fitting management of our common home which is the world. If anyone is offended by my words, I speak them with affection and the best of intentions. The church is not a toll house but a house for the Father where there is a place for everyone.” The Holy Fa-

ther continues: “There was the promise that once the glass had become full it would overflow and the poor would benefit. But what happens is that when it’s full to the brim, the glass magically grows and thus nothing ever comes out for the poor. The naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power in the workings of the prevailing economic system, while the excluded are still waiting. We frequently see the respectful attentions of the world more strongly directed toward the rich and the great, than toward the wise and virtuous. The disposition to ad-mire, and almost to worship, the rich and powerful, and to despise, or at least, to neglect persons of poor and mean condition is the universal cause of the cor-ruption of our moral sentiments. A man’s wages must at least be sufficient to maintain him. They must even on most occasions be somewhat more. Capitalism is a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power.” “Today everything comes under the laws of com-

petitive and the survival of the fittest, where the

powerful feed upon the powerless. As a result mass-

es of people find themselves excluded without work,

without possibilities, without any means of escape. Human beings are themselves considered consumer

goods to be used and then discarded.” This is the

first Pope from the Global south and his stage is vast,

his voice clear, his delivery simple and his mastery of

communication keen as the latest cell phone. Of course, some cannot listen and for some his message

is too much, over the top. Some say his words are

puzzling, too simplistic and yes, even naive. And

that he is not capable of understanding modern eco-nomics, why Rush Limbaugh calls him a Socialist.

Many see a Pope whose moral voice has a political

edge and the storm will probably get bigger. Pope

Francis is not an economist but is shouting to the

world that we live in a state of social sin crying to heaven for political and economic recalibration and

until it is fixed we will live in a world of more unrest,

more violence, and more war. This is not the first

Pope to speak about economics and social justice. In

fact we heard it at mass the Sunday after Easter; “sell their property and possessions and divide them

among all according to each one’s need” (Acts 2:45).

Catholic social teaching is NOT political but spiritual

and founded on the principal of Solidarity; that each of us is responsible for the good of all. In 1891 Pope

Leo XIII wrote his historic letter “On The Condition

of Labor”.
