FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 7, 2010

I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart,

for you have heard the words of my mouth.

— Psalm 138:1

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

This certainly is an eventful time here at Divine Infant. Today we conclude Catholic Schools Week, and throughout the week our students, teachers, and staff have been celebrating in a variety of ways. They had both teacher and student appreciation days, ice cream sundaes and root beer floats, and even a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. But most importantly, they have had school. Besides a week of fun and celebration, this past week has also been filled with teaching, learning, and prayer. This is what our school does every week and does best, and I am very proud of it. Our school provides a place where the young people of our parish can learn and grow and pray and become the people God created them to be: intelligent, loving, faithful, prayerful, divine creatures.

The other big event is the Annual Catholic Appeal which began last Sunday and continues this weekend as well. This is the major fund raiser for our Archdiocese, and it directly benefits our parish as well. I will lead us in the in-pew pledge drive at all the Masses this weekend. This is our opportunity not simply to make a do-nation but to make a commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ in our local church. Your pledge is the way you, like the first disciples, follow in the footsteps of Christ to do the work of preaching and healing. Basically, that is what funds from the Annual Catholic Appeal do: they go to the ministries of preaching the good news of Jesus Christ and healing all those who are in need. Please prayerfully consider how you can make a commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ through the Annual Catholic Appeal. Lastly, this Friday Cardinal George will be coming to Divine Infant to administer the sacrament of Confir-mation to our eighth grade class. These students from our Religious Education Program and our School have worked hard to prepare for this Mystery. Initially, Bishop John Manz was scheduled to come, but then the Cardinal decided to pay us a visit. It is a great honor to our eighth graders to be chrismated by our Archbishop. Please keep our Confirmandi in your prayers this week. Fr. Michael

GOD’S CALL In today’s scriptures we hear three instances of people receiving and responding to a call from God. These accounts follow the pattern of most scriptural call narratives: a divine presence appears and speaks; the person expresses fear or unworthiness, receives encouragement, and finally responds to God’s call. Today’s first reading shows an unworthy Isaiah responding to the Lord’s call, “Here I am; send me!” (Isaiah 6:8). In the second reading Paul tells us that, even though he had persecuted the church, he was called to be an apostle. In the Gos-pel, despite Simon Peter’s protest that he is a sin-ner, Jesus calls James, John, and Simon to follow him. They leave everything they have and follow Je-sus—that is, they become Jesus’ disciples. These scriptures can challenge us to take stock of our lives. How do we experience Jesus’ call to disciple-ship in our lives? How well and faithfully are we re-sponding?

LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW Living the Christian faith is the exact opposite of the modern preoccupation with “looking out for number one.”

IMPORTANT… ...SPECIAL MEETING OF THE WOMEN’S

GUILD OF DIVINE INFANT PARISH Fr. Michael will be in attendance at a Special Open Meeting of the Divine Infant Women’s Guild. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss fu-ture Guild direction, leadership and strategies. You are invited to come and present any and all ideas that could enhance the Guild. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 15th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm in Langan Hall. All la-dies of the parish are invited to attend this very im-portant meeting.

JOIN ONE OF OUR MUSIC GROUPS Here is an update on joining our music groups at this time. The Divine Infant Adult Choir opens for newcomers at the begin-ning of each of the choir seasons. Currently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Lent/Easter season. Newcomers are welcome to join us

at our first rehearsal of the season on Wednesday, February 10th, from 7:15 to 8:15 pm in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join are a blendable singing voice plus the time and dedica-tion to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and litur-gies. A complete schedule of events will be distrib-uted at the first rehearsal. The Divine Infant Youth Ensemble is open to young people of high school and college age who enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument. These young people must come with a blendable singing voice and some level of accomplishment on the in-strument. For more information, please call Judy Schindler at 383-4288. For information about any of our music groups, please call Janet Reif at 531-9495 or call the rectory and leave a message for her to contact you.

LENTEN REFLECTION AND BOOK DISCUSSION

Members of the Liturgy Committee will come to-gether during Lent to pray and reflect upon the book, Life of the Beloved: Spiritual Living in a Secular World by Henri Nouwen. All are invited to join us. As we did last year, we will meet once a week for the six weeks of Lent. You may choose to come: Tuesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 pm begin-ning February 23rd, or Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 to 2:30 pm beginning February 24th. We will meet in the old convent meeting room, 10120 Kent Street. The cost of the book is $14.00. From the book’s prologue… “Speak to us about the deepest yearning of our hearts, about our many wishes, about hope; not about the many strategies for survival, but about trust; not about new methods of satisfying our emo-tional needs, but about love. Speak to us about a vision larger than the clamorings of our mass media. Yes, speak to us about something or someone greater than ourselves. Speak to us about...God.”

ATTENTION! The Annual Mother/Daughter Mass and Fashion Show on Saturday, March 27th, is approaching soon and we are in need of your help. We are in need of models and volunteers. If anyone is interested in helping, we are having a meeting on Monday, February 8th, in Langan Hall at 7:00 pm. If you have any questions, please call Donna Polak at 865-8792 or Laura DeBartolo at 630 368-9924.

REGISTRATION FORM If you are new at Divine Infant or have never registered, we invite you to fill out this form and drop it in the collection basket. This helps us to know our parishioners and to share information with you. We appreciate everyone’s regular use of the Sunday envelopes as a sign of unity and commitment to Divine Infant. SCHOOL NEWS

Fourth grade student Jennifer Lee prepares for Catholic School Week’s Open House by creating a replica of herself at her desk and writes a letter to her parents thanking them for sending her to Divine Infant.

Students participate in a game of “Faith Jeop-ardy” while celebrating Catholic Schools Week. Stu-dents were chosen at random to represent their classroom. The teams, “The Holy Cows” and “The Holy Rollers”, competed in answering questions re-lated to their religion curriculum.

The kindergarten class made tracings of them-selves and mailed them to a friend or relative cho-sen by their parent. They did this project after read-ing the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown where a child becomes flat and gets mailed to his friend in California. The book goes on to tell of all his adven-tures. The kindergarten Flat Stanleys were mailed before Christmas and are now coming home to Di-vine Infant. They have traveled as far as England and Mexico.

Pictured are James Stiso and Kayla with their Flat Stanleys

Watch out Robert Frost, Langston Hughes and Shel Silverstein! We have discovered that several of Divine Infant’s 6th and 7th grade students are bud-ding poets. We are proud to announce that the fol-lowing students’ poems have been selected for pub-lication by Creative Communications: Grade 6 poets are: Amelia Castillo, Danielle DeSena, Maeve Grimes, Marcel Tworek, Aja Collins, David Prig-nano, Theresa Hutto, Matthew Lyons, Joshua Simmons, Peter Shuflit, William Lyles, Kyle Ber-mudez, Haley Calabrese, Omar Paniagua. Grade 7 poets are: Lizzette Enorme, Joe Genova, Louis Herman, Kevin Jackson, Chris Kulnig, Alex Kwok, Connor Olen, Luis Ornelas, Akin Oyetayo, Carl Robst and Tyvell Towner.

Congratulations!

Sixth grade students select Accelerated Reader books to check out from the school library. After completing the book, the student takes a compre-hension test on the computer. They work to obtain their A.R. classroom goal for the third quarter.

Pictured are Maeve Grimes and Danielle DeSena as they browse the library for Accelerated Reader books.

Congratulations!!

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2010 They Left Everything,,,

Our faith is lived in schools and parishes, soup kitchens and counseling centers, on street corners and in churches, where people of all backgrounds in every neighborhood of the Archdiocese of Chicago are served.

Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps support the necessary financial needs of our schools, parishes and ministries in the Archdiocese. Your gift touches the lives of the unborn, the student, the edu-cators, the infirmed, the elderly, the homeless and those suffering from injustice, both at home and abroad.

Please make a pledge to the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Your gift underwrites ministries serving the People of God throughout Cook and Lake Counties.

The prayer of your heart, the work of your hands, and your generous offering of financial support—all this identifies you among those who followed Him.

NEW PARISHIONERS Stephen & Beth Forde and Lucy

February 5, 2010

Dear Pastor, Parish Staff and Parishioners,

We extend our prayerful gratitude to all who supported the Retirement Fund for Religious Ap-peal in your parish in December. As of January 31st, the fund has received $852,295.00 from 216 parishes. Ninety-five cents of each dollar contrib-uted goes directly to the needs of retired religious.

I join the thousands of retired religious who benefit from your generosity as they remember you in their daily prayer. Your response to this ap-peal is a marvelous display of the true goodness of the human spirit.

In these challenging and uncertain times may the simple signs of God’s presence bless each of you with a sense of peace and promise in your daily lives.

Gratefully,

Sister Margaret Coleman, OSF Retirement Fund Coordinator

MISSING DIVINE INFANT ALUMNI Over the next few weeks, we will be listing the names of missing alumni. These are the names of the for-mer students by class year for the classes of 1981 - 1990.

If you have information regarding any of the above, please contact Pam Kouimelis (‘63) at [email protected] or 708.343.6240, or Jean Bretwisch Hernal (‘74) at [email protected] or 708.865.1941.

I’LL DO IT Chances are you’ve heard this one before, but it bears repeating.

“This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.”

In the reading from Isaiah today, we hear about the prophet’s call. He has a vision of God’s holiness and majesty so overpowering that he becomes sharply aware of the great gulf between him and God and between God and God’s people. Yet the angel touches Isaiah’s lips with the burning coal and says “Your wickedness is removed, your sin is purged.” And when the voice of the Lord says, “Who will go for us?” Isaiah immediately replies, “Here I am; send me!” (Isaiah 6:7, 8, 9). Isaiah doesn’t look around for someone else to do the job. He doesn’t make excuses. He doesn’t ask for time to think things over. Nor does he ask what will be required of him. This is a trust with no strings attached, a willing-ness to do God’s will wherever that may lead. Simon Peter and the other fishermen in today’s Gospel have caught nothing, but Jesus tells them to let down their nets in deep water, and the catch is so huge that it takes all hands to haul it aboard. Like Isaiah, Simon Peter is only conscious of his own sin-fulness. Jesus tells him not to be afraid, and all at once the whole crew join Simon and leave every-thing to follow wherever Jesus will lead them.

INTERFAITH CAREER NETWORK… ...invites you to a program designed especially for those who find themselves “between opportunities”. Career coach, lifelong devotee of rock n’roll, accom-plished executive, author, facilitator and volunteer Jeff Carroll will provide you with a unique collection of insights into the ever-changing, always frustrating job search process. Jeff has spent nearly 20 years in the field of leadership development helping people revive, redeem, re-wire, reassess, revamp and re-ignite their careers. The “guide” is comprised of 15 principles (i.e., Engaging the Enemy, the Networking Paradox, Detour to Nowhere) that will help you man-age your expectations about this crazy ride, as well as encourage you to develop a healthy sense of hu-mor for your journey. Once you internalize these principles your search will become far more efficient and effective! Jeff’s passion for helping others along with his empathetic brand of humor promises to make this a session you won’t want to miss. This program is open to all and there is no fee for attend-ing. Hope you can join us on Thursday, February 18th, at St. John of the Cross Parish Center, 5005 South Wolf Road, Western Springs.

These sessions will usually be held on the third Wednesday evening of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism.

D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Mrs. Rita Raysa, 865-8071.

WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day.

No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
