Fifth Sunday After Pentecost Propers for Independence Day
July 5, 2020
Welcome to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church
The Tree of Life is Growing Here
We are called to offer sanctuary in the city, to grow in God’s love,
to seek the renewal of the world
We continue in this season to worship together virtually. We are glad you are on this journey with us. We will be working each week to improve the quality of our online liturgy. If we experience technical difficulties during the service, we will pause the livestream until the issue is resolved. You are the congregation; there is no worship without you! As we gather for worship together in our different locations, we are making different choices of how to participate. Please know that, just as you are welcome to “come as you are” in the physical church, so we hope you will participate here “as you will.”
Children are particularly invited to “make a joyful noise!” and to participate fully and actively in worship, as they can help us all learn to be creative in this new way of being together. You may want to experiment with these and other ideas. Some children may prefer to hear the Godly Play story they would have heard in physical church; please check www.standrewdenver.org (Parish Resources/Households with Children) to find information on how to connect to our virtual Godly Play recording. Older children and youth are invited to notice different preaching styles and/or to reflect on how the parts of the service work together (or don’t) and to connect the week’s message to The Way of Love.
In response to the latest research, and to new guidelines from the Colorado Department of Health, and the Office of the Bishop, and in a spirit of love and care for our liturgical team, we are making ongoing adjustments to our arrangements in the church to allow the recommended distancing between singers and speakers. You won’t see all our musicians at once, but you will hear them!

The People sit The Psalm: 145:8-15 Anglican Chant, Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) 8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, * slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The Lord is loving to everyone * and his compassion is over all his works. 10 All your works praise you, O Lord, * and your faithful servants bless you. 11 They make known the glory of your kingdom * and speak of your power. 12 That the peoples may know of your power * and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; *
your dominion endures throughout all generations. 14 The Lord is faithful in all his words * and merciful in all his deeds. 15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; * he lifts up those who are bowed down. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:*
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
The Lessons The First Lesson Deuteronomy 10: 17-21 The Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God; him alone you shall worship; to him you shall hold fast, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise; he is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things that your own eyes have seen.
Here ends the Reading The People stand The First Canticle: Magnificat setting: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)
Service in C major My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior; *
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him * in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, * he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, * and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, * and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel, * for he has remembered his promise of mercy, The promise he made to our fathers, * to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
The People sit The Second Lesson Hebrews 11: 8-16 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old-- and Sarah herself was barren-- because he considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.” All of these died in faith without having received the promises, but from a distance they saw and greeted them. They confessed that they were strangers and foreigners on the earth, for people who speak in this way make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. If they had been thinking of the land that they had left behind, they would have had the opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; indeed, he has prepared a city for them.
Here ends the Reading
The People stand The Second Canticle: Nunc dimittis setting: Ralph Vaughan Williams
Service in C major Lord, you now have set your servant free * to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, * whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, * and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
The Third Lesson Matthew 5: 43-48 Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
6
Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

We are Still the Church
We are learning how to come together as a non-proximate community of prayer, worship, fellowship, and service to the world. Each day brings new responses to an unfolding situation. Thank you to our parish leaders, vestry, staff, and clergy, who have worked faithfully and tirelessly for months now. Thank you to those of you who have offered to help as we learn new ways of being together, to those of you who have responded to our ongoing efforts to be church in an unexpected way.
