Glory to God in the highest,   and peace to his people on earth.  

Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,   we worship you, we give you thanks,   we praise you for your glory.  

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world:   have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father:   receive our prayer.

SECOND READING               Romans 7.15‐25a 

Lector      A Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Romans  

I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.  So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

HOLY GOSPEL      Matthew 11.16‐19, 25‐30

Jesus said to the crowd, “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another,  

‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ 

 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”  At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.  “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

NICENE CREED 

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,  maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.  

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation 

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit 

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. 

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again 

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven 

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, 

and his kingdom will have no end.  

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,  who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. 

We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE 

Let us come before God in a posture of openness, expecting the Holy Spirit to transform our  lives and to lead us into the offering of our prayers, as we respond, “Hear us, good Lord.”  (a brief silence)  

Free us from the bondage of our sinful ways, our blindness to truth, our stubbornness and lack  of discipline, that we may yearn after the fruits of the divine Word and follow its wisdom; let us  pray. Hear us, good Lord.  

Strengthen the love and devotion amongst family members, that forgiveness may heal old  wounds, and mutual affection pave the way to wholeness; let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  

Guide the leaders of our Church, that there may be mutual respect across our ministries, and a renewed sense of partnership in bringing God’s Kingdom into the most troubled corners of our neighborhoods and nations; let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  

Encourage our civic leaders to modify their convictions with compromise, that there may be a  renewal of hope for those who experience poverty, unemployment, and lack of educational  opportunities; let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  

Reveal the unfolding beauty of creation, the uniqueness of seasons, and the joy and wonder of  your handicraft, that we may delight in guarding these gifts; let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  Receive those who have died into your arms of mercy, that they may sleep in everlasting peace;  let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  Faithfully seeking the path to new life, let us continue our prayers for those we mention now,  both silently and aloud.  (Pause)  Let us pray. Hear us, good Lord.  

Presider  O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of your mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to you for help; for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever.  Amen.

CONFESSION OF SIN

Presider     Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.  Silence may be kept.  

God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, 

in ourselves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, 

the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. 

Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. 

 

Presider  Almighty God have mercy on you,  forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 

   

A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION 

A spiritual communion is a personal devotional that anyone can pray at any time to express their desire to receive Holy Communion at that moment, but in which circumstances impede them from actually receiving Holy Communion.  In union, Blessed Jesus, with the faithful gathered at every altar of your Church where your Blessed Body and Blood are offered this day, and remembering particularly our own church community, we long to offer you praise and thanksgiving, for creation and all the blessings of this life, for the redemption won for us by your life, death, and resurrection, for the means of grace and the hope of glory.  And particularly for the blessings given us, that we now name, either silently or aloud.  (pause)  My Jesus, I believe that you are truly present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. I love you above all things, and long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray:  

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, 

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, 

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,  

and the power, and the glory,  for ever and ever. Amen. 

 Lord Jesus Christ, you have instituted for us a great sacrament in your promise of life and love, which we remember now as we hear your words again: “This is my body; this is my blood — given for you.” Feed us in our hearts with faith and trust, draw us closer to you and to each other, and strengthen us for service to our neighbor. We come before you now, with hearts you have fed all our lives with the promise that you have given yourself for us. Keep us strong in that faith until we can meet at your table again. Amen.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God 

almighty,  the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

St. Gregory’s still has Your Back!

Backpack that is! The Long Beach Rescue Mission will again partner with local schools to supply and distribute thousands of backpacks and supplies to middle school students in need. Regardless of how school will look in the fall, students need the supplies to do their work.

Our goal for St. Gregory’s is to provide filled backpacks to help as many students as possible start the year off prepared. The list of sup-plies is very specific so please do not add extra items. The backpacks MUST BE SOLID color. Please Do Not get a rolling backpack.
