First Announcement March 29, 2017
This is the First Announcement of the International school andworkshop on “FIssionExperimentSandTheoreticalAdvances–FIESTA2017”,Sep.17-22,2017.TheeventwilltakeplaceinbeautifulSantaFe,NewMexico,USA.FIESTA2017 followsour firsteventorganizedback in2014 inSantaFe,NM.Theyear2018willmarkthe80thanniversaryofthediscoveryofnuclearfissionbyOttoHahnandFritzStrassmann,whosecorrecttheoreticalinterpretationcameonlyafewweekslaterby Lise Meitner and her nephew Otto Robert Frisch. This discovery opened up theatomicera,whichalteredthecourseofhumanhistory.Almosteightyyearslater,researchinnuclearfissionisstillcentraltoourunderstandingofnuclearforces,andaperfectexampleofaquantummany-bodyproblem.Whilethequalitative understanding of fission was achieved very quickly after its discovery, an
accurate and quantitative modeling of this process remains elusive, while numerousapplications, e.g. the nuclear fuel cycle, nonproliferation, stockpile stewardship, etc.,relyonaccurateanddetailedfissiondata.FIESTA2017combinesaschool,includingpracticalexercisesandavisittoexperimentalfacilities at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) dedicated to fissionresearch,andaworkshopintendedtodiveintocurrentresearchactivitiesinthetopicscoveredbytheschool.ItwillagaintakeplaceattheEldoradoHotel(http://www.eldoradohotel.com)inSantaFe,NM,onSep.17-22,2017.Thistime,theeventwillbeorganizedasfollows:

• Day4:PromptFissionNeutronsandGammaRayso Dr.OlivierSerot(CEA),Dr.Franz-JosefHambsch(JRC)
• Day5:Applicationso Dr.Jean-ChristopheSublet(IAEA),Dr.AvneetSood(LANL)
Eachday(exceptday3),twoschoollectureswillbedeliveredinthemorning,followedby a practice session using Jupyter notebooks (http://jupyter.org) that will be madeavailable to the students ahead of the school. Elementary notions of the Pythonprogramming language would be useful but are not necessary.
